I just got into bitcoins on Thursday, and a kind IRC chatter gave me 2 BTC for free. Me, being an idiot, lost it with online blackjack and coin toss games. Now I have 0.5 BTC and I'm trying to figure out a low-medium risk way to grow it to 1 or more BTC within a couple days or so.

Does anyone have any good ideas?
The grue lurks in the darkest places of the earth. Its favorite diet is adventurers, but its insatiable appetite is tempered by its fear of light. No grue has ever been seen by the light of day, and few have survived its fearsome jaws to tell the tale.

You can start a business on GLBSE.com and sell shares. The fee to list a business is 0.5 BTC. You can get rich quick.  Cheesy

Any significantly advanced cryptocurrency is indistinguishable from Ponzi Tulips.

If one could just double their money with low-medium risk in a couple days, bitcoin would be in hyperinflation (if it isn't right now, which is arguable).

'Cos everyone's going to want to invest in a business started by someone who lost three quarters of their capital gambling and wants to replace their losses in a couple of days.  Not to mention that someone who's not willing to simply write off a loss of such an insignificant amount raises red flags anyway.  It makes me wonder if the lost Bitcoins were borrowed rather than a gift - why the urgency about recovering the loss otherwise.

Also, he posted that he had 2 BTC less than eight hours ago.

All I can say is that this is Bitcoin. I don't believe it until I see six confirmations.

Nah, it wasn't borrowed. The guy just gifted me the coins and told me to pay it forward whenever I could.

I just see all the cool stuff you can do with bitcoins and desperately want to jump on the bandwagon and get started. Hell, I spent almost 3 days checking back every few minutes waiting for the blocks in my wallet to download  Grin

You can try to offer a online service.

For example, "I can help you to fix your photos for 0.xx BTC". Small business.

Yep, services which require no capital outlay on your part are the way to go.  Stick with what you know and try to avoid duplicating existing BTC services too much.

If you really want to join the bangwagon try:
(1)Learning a programming language and then complete a bounty or two needed for bitcoin or other alt coins.
(2)Start a business or website related to bitcoins.
(3)Convince others to use bitcoins or to become miners.
or (4) better yet join the bitcoin police and chase down scammers.

Release a fork of cgminer which supports RPC calls to modify parameters and get stats for use in headless hashing farms and I will give you a 20 BTC bounty.  That's a 4000% increase in your net wealth.

If you can't do that well the general idea applies.  Do something which someone else considers valuable.

Out of curiosity, what parameters would you want to modify? (all of them?) and what stats would you want to retrieve?

Eventually everything that can be done from the command line however at a minimum.
* ability to quit cgminer
* get temp,  MH/s, shares accepted, share rejected (both overall and per card)
* modify clock, memory, intensity, fan
* dead/sick GPU notification

Not to derail this thread (likely should continue in a new thread) but 20 BTC is all I am offering but no reason I need to front the full bounty myself.

The code is GPL and author has no interest in JSON RPC.  I know I am not the only one who would be interested in a RPC branch.  If you started a thread in miner/software forum asking for input/bounties I think others might contribute.  Who knows the total pledged could be significantly >30 BTC.  Anyone w/ a farm of more than 1 or 2 rigs using cgminer likely would fine RPC version very useful.

One way to "grow" it to 1 BTC would be to do some mining for yourself. Depending on your GPU it may or may not take a very long time.

Maybe you could open a casino? Seems to be a good way of getting people to convert their 2 BTC into 0.5 BTC..
