Alexander Lukashenko, during a meeting at the High Technology Park with the IT sector representatives, announced that he had “left a place” for Bitcoin mining near the Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant.

Lukashenko said:
"Wait - the nuclear power plant will be finished, and there will be a surplus of electricity... I left a place there. Let's build up farms, mine these bitcoins and sell them. Besides, people are talking, if you have Bitcoins, there is no problem selling them.”

BelNPP (Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant) is located in Astravyets in Grodno County. The first power unit will be set into operation in December 2019, second in 2020, during summer.

Additionally, the final rules of the cryptocurrency sector were defined during autumn 2018 at the Minsk High Technology Park (HTP). It is a special economic zone that its creators dream to see as the analog of the Silicon Valley of the USA.

Belarus is become known in crypto world when cryptocurrency is legalized, and also trading / mining is declared tax-free until 2023. This is likely to encourage many investors to starts work in that country, at least for a period of five years until they have to pay taxes. President Lukashenko is often called the last European dictator, due to the way in which the country is governed since 1994.

Yet he showed great interest for cryptocurrency, and more importantly, his ideas were put into practice, as opposed to some other European countries that only talk a lot, but in practice they do almost nothing.

Surplus of electricity should be used in some way, it is better to mine bitcoin then waste that energy. He know that bitcoin is have value, and that his country can profit on this in long-term. They even have mining hotel where you can bring your equipment and start mining with all the necessary support.

Belarus is going to be the new Malta. New blockchain companies, not just mining ones, will flock there due to it's crypto friendly laws. Good boost for their local economy

Belarus is still a dictatorship with strong ties to Russia, so entrepreneurs and investors will be very careful around it. There's no guarantee that tomorrow Lukashenko won't turn 180 (either on his own whim, or because Putin said so) and ban crypto and mining. Investors prefer countries with rule of the law, because they are much more predictable than authoritarian countries.

I fully agree with your statements. However, while Belarus does not cease to amaze the most preferential attitude to the use of cryptocurrency in this country. Of course, all this can change at one moment if the actual dictator Lukashenko changes his opinion regarding cryptocurrency. However, so far Belarus is a paradise for the development of cryptocurrency.

it is unbelievable that you are asking this question, look at the political situation of Belarus, they live in the dictator regime, what good can you expect from a dictatorship? You can not expect anything good coming from dictatorship. People want to be free and want their rights respected, who will want to open a mining company in a country where there is a dictatorship, human rights violations, actions against non-governmental organizations, persecution of opposition politicians, persecution of journalists.

People who want to make money. Few members of the human race would actually hold back on their money making for those reasons. The majority will pile in and live it up.

Saudi Arabia is possibly the most rancid goat-fucking regime of them all. You don't see anyone turning their money away.

The main reason they should be wary is if the government's whim changes. That's all most will care about.

This want worries me though, they are talking about BelNPP (Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant), I don't know I might be paranoid or what but part of me says that they maybe masking from behind by using Nuclear Power Plant. Maybe the dictator can used it to gain wealth quickly or more sinister motive, so I have mix emotions about it.
