What are your options to secure your GRAYLL App account?

*2FA:
We strongly recommended enable to protect your account with Two-Factor Authentication (2FA).

*IP Confirmation:
If IP confirmation enabled, logins from new IP addresses will require email confirmation.

*Multisignature Transaction:
Multisignature improves your wallet security by requiring additional approvals for each transfer out of your GRAYLL account. Two-Factor authentication (2FA) needs to be enabled to enable the multisignature option.

Does the GRAYLL App & System have any additional costs?

There are no other costs for using the GRAYLL App & System, of course you must have the GRAYLL GRX digital asset which can be purchased directly in the GRAYLL App with XLM (Stellar Lumens). Transferring GRX and XLM between accounts over the Stellar Network has a negligible cost of 0.00001 XLM (~$0.00000045) per transaction.

How much could you receive from your referrals?

The amount you receive from your referral depends on several factors; the available % reduction on the profits of algorithmic position fees, the number of referrals you have and the volume usage of your referrals in terms of algorithmic positions closed.

The GRAYLL Referral System allows you to invite family, friends and business contacts to use the GRAYLL App & Intelligence. Your invites will have a reduced Performance Fee of 15%.

For every algorithmic position that one of your confirmed referrals closes with profit you share the Performance Fee with GRAYLL.

The standard Perfomance Fee is 18% on profits, you will receive 3% of the profits and GRAYLL will receive 12% of the profits for every algorithmic position closed by your confirmed referrals.”

How does the referral program work?

Your referrals benefit from a % reduction on fees charged on the profits from the algorithmic positions when your referrals close their algorithmic positions. You in turn benefit by receiving the % difference. When algorithmic positions are closed, the position values are transferred in GRX, GRAYLL's native digital asset. The profits and fees on profits are also transferred in GRX.

What does it cost to use the algorithms?

Depending on the algorithms used a commission between 0.3% - 1.8% is charged for starting and stopping the algorithms. Arkady 0.3% | Balthazar 1.8% | Kaspar 1.3% | Melkior 0.9%

When your algorithmic positions are closed with profits a standard 18% fee is charged in the GRAYLL GRX digital asset on the profits only, not the principal amount. Has the use of Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) made the GRAYLL App & System slower?

The Stellar Network is one of the faster Distributed Ledger Technology [DLT] payment systems. Payments and transactions on the Stellar Network are usually completed and settled within 2 to 5 seconds, it still takes banks several days to settle transactions. The development languages, compute engines, micro-services, algorithms, distributed and sharded data structures and other parts of the GRAYLL architecture have all been selected and developed for optimal speed and sub-second transactions that scale with the user base and increased data and transactions being processed.

The Toppling Of Statues: Is It Time To Shake Up Our Icons?

PART I

What does it mean to see statues coming down, and how should we feel about it? Whether you’re a history buff, or reluctant victim of school trips, you can likely recall the sensation of walking through a room filled with statues. As beautiful as they may be, each was once made in the image of hero or a tyrant, or someone a little more complex and true to human nature — whether mortal or deity — inhabiting a place upon the sliding scale in between. Now, in 2020, the toppling of statues has entered the arena of public debate perhaps more than ever before. Heated protest meets counter protest, over a myriad of issues, including the destined fate of many a cast or carved historical figurehead.

Whether applauding, or incensed — or maybe just a little uneasy — many forget that the unseating of statues is nothing new. For as long as we’ve been erecting them, we have also been tearing them down, from Medieval Christians wrecking the relics on Ancient Rome, to conquering Spaniards demolishing Aztec and Incan masterpieces. Sometimes the practice reflects a rewriting of history, while at others it reflects an increased reverence for it. As the current wave of defaced and nose-diving monuments meet their various fates, perhaps it is time to lift ego from the equation, and instead consider the value of experiencing our society collectively evolve.

The Downfall Of Icons

The swell of the Black Lives Matter protest had it’s straw and camel moment in the United States with the death of George Floyd, so perhaps it’s fitting to reflect back on one of the earliest known statue oustings of the so-called land of liberty. Back in 1776, only a few short days after the signing of the Declaration of Independence, soldiers and civilians famously tore down a gilt statue of Britain’s King George III, right in the heart of Manhattan. As the USA was born, a statue met it’s demise, and so the course of human evolution continued.

The toppling of certain statues arrive at a pivotal moment, such as that of Hungarian dictator Joseph Stalin in the 1956 revolution, or of Saddam Hussein after the US invasion in 2003. Others mark the tragic destruction of something ancient, such as the centuries old giant Buddha statues in Afghanistan, destroyed by the Taliban in 2001, or the recent lost monuments of Palmyra, Syria, at the hands of the Islamic State. Others yet, represent a lingering poignancy — the correcting of history miss-told, or the removal of symbols of long standing injustice. Imagine the felling of British politician Cecil Rhodes in Zimbabwe — formerly known as Rhodesia, or the thousands of Lenin statues recently painted or smashed across the Ukraine.

The Discomfort Of Clarity

We seem to hold onto ties between our sense of identity, and the rose-tinting of the past, and to struggle with being objective when history books are edited for accuracy. We forget that the job of historians is to seek greater clarity, and tease the truth out from underneath each era’s propaganda. When young Bristolians rolled the statue of slaver Edward Colston down a hill and into Bristol’s Harbour, far from erasing the history of Colston’s action, they gave him greater notoriety than ever before.

As Londoners turn their eyes to statues of Winston Churchill, their actions don’t erase the reality that this was the man at the helm when the Nazis were defeated, but rather reflect the sad truth that his colonial policies led to the last famine in Bengal in 1943, in which some three million “beastly people”, as he described Bengalis, lost their lives. There can be no sugar coating of the devastation laid upon many a culture by colonialism, and in today’s time of accessible information, the moment has come to look back with clarity, and skip the habit of sweeping unsavoury truths under the carpet.

The Toppling Of Statues: Is It Time To Shake Up Our Icons?

PART II

Should Effigies Be Eternal?

Scientific study describes the mere-exposure effect, a phenomena by which we develop a preference for things, simply because we are often exposed to them. Knowing that what we see every day can permeate subliminally, perhaps it’s worth giving careful thought to the icons that fill our public spaces. As we grapple with what recognizing barbaric acts of the past means for our future, we can also reflect on the illusory truth effect, by which we have the tendency to believe false information to be correct if we hear it enough times.

Today, we understand the flaws of human thinking better than ever. We can either allow this knowledge to be harnessed for modern misdeeds, or we can use our understanding to build a more constructive future. As discussions take place about replacing felled statues with new ones of Prince or Dolly Parton, some might roll their eyes, but are these not greater influencers of current culture? If not celebrities, who do we want our future icons to be — whose presence on plinths with give the most to, and represent the best of, our societies?

Deciding The Fate Of The Fallen

In Belgium, the dropping statues are those of King Leopold II, a man once reinvented in the history books as the “Builder King”. Today his legacy’s rosy shroud has been removed, and he is recognized as a rampant paedophile whose reign in Congo saw the violent murder of some 10 million people. The director of the Africa Museum in Tervuren has received many requests to take the fallen statues, but is resisting for fear of creating an monument to monstrosity. When questioned, he said “I could maybe take a few of these statues here and make some kind of contemporary art out of them”.

In parallel, internationally renowned and yet tantalizingly anonymous Bristolian artist Banksy suggested resurrecting the statue of Edward Colston at a jaunty angle, and adding further characters to the artwork in the act of tearing it down — forever in memoriam. There seems to be merit in keeping the artistic works that we no longer deem worthy of the public sphere, as part of our historic record, but maybe it’s not such a loss if we don’t have space for all of them. Perhaps too, the transformation of old relics into modern art installations is another sign on cultural evolution — maybe this is exactly the kind of expression that our current era needs.

Making Space To Evolve

f we are to move past the injustices of history, we not only need to make united gestures of recognition for those who were oppressed, but also to make peace with the reality that many were complicit without ill intention, or fundamental understanding. Simply because the lines of acceptability have moved since a century ago, a decade ago, or even yesterday, doesn’t mean we have to sit in paralysis, afraid of moving forwards. This is where the ego can be released — it’s not about you or me, beyond the actions that we will take on the road ahead. It’s about evolution. It’s time to shake off some of history’s shackles, look back from a new contemporary mindset, and look forward with a focus for how we can unite in prosperity.

Making Generosity Part Of Your Portfolio

PART I

So far, the year 2020 has been turbulent for many of us. Between the devastating economic impact of the Coronavirus, a fresh wave of civil rights protest — most notably within the Black Lives Matter movement — and the continuing plight of refugees around the world, many of us are acutely aware of the needs of others. Even more so if we have found ourselves delving deeper than usual into contemplation, under lockdown. If you have been asking yourself how you can help, or whether your budget can stretch to accommodate greater charitable giving, recent research indicates that these are not questions to allow to fall by the wayside. Indeed, it would seem that the benefits of giving extend far beyond the receiver. Actively practising generosity holds the power to enhance your health, benefit the community at large, and — counter-intuitively — even increase your wealth in the long term.

The Trend For Giving

These days it feels as if the most wealthy among us are in contest to prove their philanthropic spirit. The Oxford Dictionary describes philanthropists as “A person who seeks to promote the welfare of others, especially by the generous donation of money to good causes”, which sounds like the makings of a noble title indeed. Perhaps the most famous of today’s philanthropists is Bill Gates, who is thought to have donated almost $50 billion dollars to charitable causes in his lifetime, including efforts through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which was founded in 2000, to “improve the quality of life for individuals around the world.”

Other notable givers very much in the public eye include Warren Buffet, who has given more than $46 billion dollars to charity since the turn of the Millennium, and self-made celebrity Oprah, who has donated millions through her Oprah Winfrey Charitable Foundation, the Angel Network and the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy Foundation. Some in the limelight prefer to keep their generosity quiet, such as pop culture icon Nicki Minaj, who has been donating to Indian villages for years without mentioning it to her fans.

Simultaneously, the generosity of some may seem surprising — and counter to their public image. Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook is perhaps known best for the scandals surrounding the social media platform, in relation to data misuse, such as during the Cambridge Analytica scandal, and more recently the advertisers boycott over the platform’s handling of hate speech, which is estimated to have lost Zuckerberg $7 billion dollars. Despite such negative attention, many remain unaware that Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan have pledged to give away 99% of their wealth to charitable causes over the course of their lifetimes. Currently, that figure sits at around $46 billion dollars, which is no small contribution.

Making Generosity Part Of Your Portfolio

PART II

Health Rewards For The Generous

Not long ago we touched on the scientific findings that we are hardwired for kindness. For example when we comfort another in distress, pleasure centres within our brain light up, releasing dopamine and oxytocin. Dopamine creates a sense of pleasure and reward, as provided by activities such as eating, shopping, or sex. Oxytocin, known affectionately as “the cuddle hormone”, plays the role of making us feel secure and connected. The same can be said of giving generously, either to people we know, through direct volunteering, or even through monetary donation — even though we may never witness the results of our altruism. A 2017 study from the Women’s Philanthropy Institute found that the greater percentage a household gives of it’s income, the higher sense of life satisfaction householders will experience.

A study reported by Rush found that when those suffering from heart disease pursued spending time helping others, their risk of heart attack dropped. Another linked giving to a lower overall risk of mortality. Meanwhile, research published in the Oxford Journal, The Gerontologist, revealed that those who practice generosity experience lower rates of depression. Findings from the International Journal of Psychophysiology and Stony Brook University indicate that giving also correlates with lower blood pressure and reduced stress levels, respectively.

Lifting Society As A Whole

Some suggest that the psychological and physical benefits of giving lead us to not only greater happiness, but greater productivity. Just as those on the receiving end of generosity experience a benefit, so too does the giver, and the community within which the giver exists. If a culture of generosity is on the rise, then stepping into the wave and becoming part of an altruistic movement seems to be a course worth taking. The good news is that, while we may not have the means to give generously today, we can reap the same benefits simply by giving a little — whether it’s helping a friend, or volunteering with a charity; giving $10 a month, or $10,000 a month: the effects can be equally transformative. With this in mind, why not incorporate the act of giving into your budget — either physically or financially — and experience these rewards for yourself.

Is Passive Income The Key To Cultivating Wealth?

PART I

We all dream of accumulating wealth — enough to live the life of our dreams, whether that involves travel, quality time with family, or having the freedom to pursue our interests. Have you ever found yourself feeling frustrated, in this context, that there are only so many hours in the day? What may not have struck you is that there are strategies that can be adopted to uncouple our capacity to earn from our time constraints. If you’ve never come across the concept of passive income before, it is high time to begin viewing wealth accumulation in a different light!

What Exactly Is Passive Income?

Perhaps the best way to frame what passive income is is by beginning with what it isn’t. Whether you work for an hourly rate, an annual salary, in a freelance capacity, or on commission, if your working life can be defined as a continuing trade of time and action investment in return for money, you are generating an active income. In this sense, you are paid for the work you do, and if you stop working, the money simply stops flowing. In contrast, a passive income is an income derived from something that, once established, generates revenue with little or no ongoing input. It means creating something of value that will deliver a cash reward time and time again, without a proportionate demand of your time.

“If you don’t find a way to make money while you sleep, you will work until you die.” — Warren Buffett

Examples of what a passive income source might look like are plentiful. Of course, some require an up-front capital investment, and are not without risk — such as purchasing property which is then let or leased, or buying dividend-yielding stocks. Meanwhile others, such as creating digital products ranging from e-books to online courses, or building a website and monetizing traffic with advertising, call for a hefty initial time investment. To give another example, many seek a passive income through affiliate marketing, either on their own website, or on a social media platform. In this case, businesses are willing to pay you a proportion of their sale value when you direct a customer to their site. Ultimately, identifying your perfect passive income strategy means assessing what resources you can leverage for income creation — be it in terms of assets, interests, or skills!

Is Passive Income The Key To Cultivating Wealth?

PART II

Why Is A Passive Income So Worth While?

There is a popular saying that today’s millionaires have an average of seven income streams, although nobody seems to know exactly where this figure comes from. Despite the mystery, there is unquestionable logic in the idea that the practice of generating wealth benefits from both the stability created by several alternative income streams, and the disentanglement of hours in versus money out. Creating passive sources of income can allow you to create a steady in-flow of capital that allows you greater autonomy with your time. This, in turn, can be used not only to seek greater life enjoyment, but to explore new sources of income, and so a pattern of growth is established!

“You become financially free when your passive income exceeds your expenses.” — T. Harv Eker

A diverse and layered wealth-building plan can provide protection when the unexpected occurs — as has been the case for so many during the current Covid-19 pandemic. Should one income stream fail, or indeed you loose your day job all together, you are far less likely to be left without a safety net. Establishing sources of passive income can facilitate a more enjoyable work-life balance, or even early retirement! Of course, many forms of passive income will require ongoing input to some extent, whether in the form of property maintenance, staying abreast of market trends, or keeping your website content up to date. However, pursuing a passive income can mean liberation from the experience of always chasing a wage.

Looking At Money In A Different Way

If you have historically only ever ticked the active income box, and haven’t achieved the income you aspire to, perhaps the time has come to re-frame the way that you view money! Consider this: As we move through life, we each are willing to part with our hard-earned cash for something that has meaningful value to us. This may be a product, and experience, or a resource. Shifting towards passive wealth creation means thinking in terms of creating value that others will see worth in, rather than self-limiting with a time-to-money equation.

“The key to financial freedom and great wealth is a person’s ability or skill to convert earned income into passive income and/or portfolio income.” — Robert Kiyosaki

In order to grow our assets, on a most fundamental level we must follow the simple rule of spending less than we earn. However, adding depth to this rule means topping and tailing it with crucial steps at beginning and end. By establishing passive income at the point of earning, and careful investment at the point of saving, we can give the money within our lives a circular and self-perpetuating function. In this sense, passive income truly may be your golden ticket to wealth creation!

According to Jessica Pryce-Jones, author of Happiness at work, we each spend on average 100,000 hours working over the course of our lifetime. The money we earn, of course, allows us to meet our most fundamental needs, however it also holds the potential to provide us with true life satisfaction. A passive income can reward with the chance to work less, or to simply select the work we do invest time in with greater care. If the prosperity you hope for is not your current experience, why not begin exploring your own unique passive income potential?

Pseudoscience Or Game Changer: What’s The Deal With Mindfulness?

PART I

Mindfulness is a buzz-word term that gets bandied about a lot these days. If you’re naturally inclined to scepticism — just like me — you might have dismissed mindfulness up until now, or at least eyed it with suspicion from a safe distance. To some, it might sound like a concept that goes hand in hand with flowing natural fabrics, and the wafting scent of patchouli, but to assume it to be so — especially if that simply isn’t your vibe — is to miss out on a tool of great potential value.

In reality, the practice of mindfulness has been the subject of scientific study for near half a century, and experts are beginning to flesh out a very tangible picture of evidence based reasons to give it a go. Research points to mindfulness being not only a means for life enhancement that we can all use, but also a resource for those grappling with mental health disorders and addictive behaviour. Here, we will dive into exactly what mindfulness is. What does the current science indicate, and what is yet to be revealed? Rest assured, should it concern you, that a bohemian sensibility is compatible, but certainly isn’t a requisite!

What Exactly Is Mindfulness?

One of the challenges faced by researchers is that the term itself is of the umbrella variety, covering a broad spectrum of different styles of practice. What is considered consensus is that mindfulness describes engaging with an endeavour which draws our attention to the present moment. It is a form of self-regulation, an attempt to adopt an attitude of openness, and the practice of paying attention to our intention. A mindfulness practice may take a form with roots in spirituality, such as meditation derived from Buddhist teachings, yoga, prayer, or tai chi — however it may also come in the form of secular chanting, performing body scans, or breath exercises.

The integration of a spiritual element is a question of personal taste — whether one feels they are communing with something larger than themselves, or simply taking the reins of the self in a purely practical sense, is down to the practitioner. Harvard psychologist, and author of the now infamous Mindfulness, Ellen Langer considers mindfulness to be — first and foremost — a method of interrupting the automatic behaviours that can, if left unchecked, lead us into ruts of negativity. She describes mindfulness as a resource to help us tap into intuition and creativity, and open ourselves up to new information and perspectives.

The Meeting Of Science And Mindfulness

It was in the 1970s that a scientific eye was first substantially and strategically applied to mindfulness. Jon Kabat-Zinn, a microbiology PhD, was fascinated by the impact he had observed in such practices, and so he set about engaging patients in the basic principles of mindfulness meditation within a medical setting. He developed the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction program, or MBSR, which called for consistent practice of carefully focusing attention, as a secular or non-spiritual application of mindfulness. His initial work with MBSR, in collaboration with affective neuroscience pioneer Richard Davidson, showed great promise in the alleviation of chronic pain.

In parallel, transcendental meditation was enjoying a huge surge in popularity across the United States. Professor Herbert Benson of Harvard Medical School also found his curiosity piqued within this period of high-speed adoption of eastern practices. His work identified that transcendental meditation, alongside yoga and even religious prayer, triggered what he called the relaxation response. He described this as our ability to trigger a release of chemicals and brain signals slow muscle and organ activity, while increasing blood flow to the brain — the exact opposite of fight or flight.

Changes In The Brain

Using fMRI, Dr. Sara Lazar of Harvard Medical School was able to identify that eight weeks of MBSR was enough to alter grey matter concentrations in areas of the brain responsible for emotion regulation, learning, and memory. Her work indicated that those who have years of mindfulness practice under their belts appear to have a thicker frontal cortex than those that don’t, which suggests a level of protection against age related cognitive decline. However, commentators point out that it is hard to know the extent to which such long-term practitioners are inclined to mindfulness because of an already distinct brain structure, or have entirely altered their brain structure due to dedication to mindfulness. In this sense, future research still has much to reveal.

A study published in the journal Social Congnitive And Affective Neuroscience pointed to capacity for a mindfulness practice to dampen stress reactions in the amygdala, while enhancing connectivity between the amygdala and prefrontal cortex. The result being that those subjected to stressors, who are adept at mindfulness, will be more resilient — bouncing back from stress quickly, or being less reactive in the first place. We can see the impact of such transformation in a steady stream of studies: from meditation training reducing drug use in prisons — leading to the development of Mindfulness Based Relapse Prevention programs — to positive impact on patients struggling with binge eating at the University of New Mexico.

Pseudoscience Or Game Changer: What’s The Deal With Mindfulness?

PART II

Changes In The Body

Not all of the changes thought to be triggered by mindfulness have been observed within the brain. In fact, Kabat-Zinn identified that combining a mindfulness practice with light-treatment for psoriasis resulted in a faster skin healing rate, at no less than four times the statistical average. This may be because MBSR appears to improve immune function. David Cresswell and colleagues, of the University Of California, found that mindfulness enhanced the immunity of not only healthy individuals, but even in those with HIV. Those practising mindfulness meditation were also found to have increased telomerase activity. This enzyme plays a key role in ensuring the health of each of our cell’s telomeres — the protective caps that top and tail our chromosomes. Each time our cells regenerate, this function protects us from degeneration, making it vital for longevity.

Mastering Mindfulness For Increased Resilience

Making mindfulness part of your routine is, it would seem, well worth exploring. When considering how much time we should dedicate to mindfulness, we might emit a chuckle at the old Zen proverb that says “You should sit in meditation for twenty minutes every day — unless you’re too busy. Then you should sit for an hour.” There may be some truth in such wisdom, however for those who can’t begin to imagine spending an hour doing yoga, or even 10 minutes meditating, mindfulness can be incorporated into daily life without taking time out.

Self-training can be applied simply by connecting with the senses while performing every day tasks, observing the body, and being more aware of surrounding colours and textures, taste, or the sensation of touch. The result of drawing the self into present awareness is known as embodying an “approach state”, as defined by Dr. Daniel Siegel in his book Mindsight, and described as a benchmark of resilience. Those achieving this state are thought to be better able to move into meaningful challenge, rather than pulling away. With that in mind, what could you achieve, if you harnessed the enhancing power of mindfulness?

Change Your Life With A Wash Of Colour

PART I

Many of us have a favourite colour, but did you know that the colours that surround you may influence you in a spectrum — pun intended — of different ways? From the theories of colour psychology, to the practice of chromotherapy, hues can be harnessed to alter our moods, and even induce healing. Once your awareness of colour is awakened, you will likely find that you can intuit how colour is being used around you — especially in marketing — and how you can employ it to suit your needs. Read on to discover how to colour hack your life!

Our relationship with colour is as intrinsic as our ability to see it. Of course, we don’t all see colour in exactly the same way. Some people experience one of several forms of colour blindness. For example, Mark Zuckerberg is red-green colour blind, which is one of the reasons why he selected blue branding for Facebook!

English Scientist Sir Isaac Newton was the first to gain a glimpse of how we perceive colour in 1666. He observed that when seemingly pure white light passes through a prism, it splits to reveal the full repertoire of the visible colour spectrum. He identified that each colour has its own unique wave length, that cannot be further separated. He also discovered that, in the form of light waves, certain colours could be combined, while other colour combinations would seemingly neutralise each other. For example, red and yellow light creates and orange hue. Meanwhile, light beams of green and magenta simply cancel each other out, and illuminating in monochrome.

When Culture And Colour Collide

Colours appear to influence us in a number of different ways. Some impacts seem to be instinctive, however certain associations are very much cultural, with particular palette choices possessing very different meanings and representations depending upon a range of culture-rooted influences. The practice of chromotherapy — the therapeutic use of colour — is age-old, and finds its roots in as far flung places as ancient China and ancient Egypt. From the notion that indigo can alleviate skin ailments, to orange holding healing power for the lungs, belief in the power of colour is nothing new. However, when applying colour, it is important to realise that we don’t all share the same associations.

In China, red is tied to concepts of luck, happiness, and longevity, while in South Africa, it is considered a colour of mourning and struggle. Yellow traditionally represents valour and wealth in Japan, thanks to yellow chrysanthemums that warriors wore during the War Dynasties in 1357. This bright and cheery colour — as many of us consider it — has, however, some gloomier associations. In France and Germany, it is considered the colour of jealousy, while in China, it is associated with pornography. Here, the terms “yellow picture” and “yellow book” describe media of a strictly adult nature!

Blue is a colour that receives many religious associations, all around the world. However, in Western cultures, we simultaneously discuss “having the blues”. We associate green with nature, and often with money, however within several South American cultures, the colour is connected with death. While we may experience emotional responses to certain colours, it is always important to remember that they may have meanings for others that differ from our own.

Change Your Life With A Wash Of Colour

PART II

Using Colour To Alter States

Studies on the impact of colour have led to an array of real-world colour interventions. Blue is often associated with a sense of calm, and a state of relaxation. Fascinatingly, blue coloured lighting has been harnessed in Japan, with several other countries following suit, to decrease suicide rates in high-risk locations. In a similar vein, the city of Glasgow, Scotland, found that crime rates fell in neighbourhoods where they introduced blue street lighting. In contrast, we frequently associate the colour red with energy, and impact. This has been utilized in the manufacture of medications, following the findings that placebo pills that are warm in colour prove more effective than their cool-coloured counterparts.

Evidence also suggests that colour can alter our perception of time. A study published in journal Nature found that the colour red seemed to stretch viewers’ perception of the passage of time — with men experiencing the time distortion more than women. Another study published in PubMed indicated that exposure to the colour red can speed up our reaction times too. Perhaps this is why research carried out during the 2004 Summer Olympics found that red seemed to enhance sports performance.

Colour Hacking Your Life

The fundamentals of colour psychology theory suggest that we are each influenced by colour, and that our perceptions lead to colour-motivated behaviour. The meanings we interpret within the palettes around us may be learned, or may be biologically innate, but our unique response to colour is broadly automatic. Context can influence our colour associations too. For example, red may help us get fired up on the sports field, but may detract from our performance in a written exam — where red tends to be associated with bad marks and negative results.

Several studies have pointed to the power of warm colours to increase our heart rate and blood flow, helping us to become more mentally alert. Yellow in particular, as published in the Malaysian Journal of Medical Sciences, appears to boost our ability to absorb and retain information. This makes it the perfect backdrop to learning new skills! Fundamentally, we can add elements of colour to our surroundings that will enhance the activities we wish to partake in — whether that’s red furnishings in a meeting room, or a gentle blue paint choice for the space in which you like to unwind.

Observing The Colours Around You

Of course, where influence can be harnessed, marketing research will soon follow. Today, strategies around the use of colour in marketing are well researched, and complex. To give an example of the power of colour in marketing, we can examine the colour-shift of popular brand Heinz. When they changed the label colour of their signature ketchup from red to green, they saw a $23 million dollar jump in sales over the following seven months! In other marketing colour tactics, we find that blue is considered valuable for instilling a sense of trust. So, we often see it in the branding of banks, and businesses that we trust with our data security. For another type of influence, red creates a sense of urgency, so we see it in food branding, and on sale signs.

Even walking through a busy shopping street, we can view the use of colour psychology in shop window displays. Studies indicate that we are drawn to warm or darkly coloured displays, but find cooler and paler colours more favourable. Perhaps next time you are browsing you will notice that retailers hoping for impulse shoppers, such as outlet and food shops often lean towards warm hues; large shops geared towards those on a budget are more likely to opt for blues and teals; while long-standing traditional outlets are more likely to choose a gentle pastel palette.

What impact do you notice colours having on the way that you interact with the world? Pablo Picasso once remarked that “colours, like features, follow the changes of the emotions”. Armed with the knowledge that colour can change not only how we perceive the world, but how we think, feel, and even behave, tuning into our own colour psychology can be a valuable tool in the quest we share to get the greatest reward out of life, in whatever form that may take.
