Quote
As bitcoin’s price experienced a surge this week, it seems merchants and consumers are more interested in crypto than ever.

Local-search company Yelp has joined the pact by reportedly adding a filter to help users find merchants that accept cryptocurrency. No matter if you’re looking for a burger bar, dog groomer, or any other kind of business listed on its site, you can now zero in on those that let you pay with crypto.

Yelp’s move is reflective of a larger move that the crypto space has craved – mass adoption. Whether merchants are rolling out ways to draw in customers or demand to pay with crypto is on the rise, this is clearly a good sign.

As always with these initiatives, if people don't use them (or don't use the merchants listed as accepting crypto), they'll disappear.

My respect for Yelp has grown thanks to this move since this makes it easier for customer looking for crypto related merchants and could probably boost crypto adoption in a small way as you mentioned which is a win-win situation.

Even if people don't end up utilizing this filter, I am happy thanks to this action from Yelp.

Do a lot of people still use Yelp? I though that they were slowly but surely losing a lot of customers, especially compared to previous years where they were the top review website.
I've personally never used it & stick with Tripadvisor instead. Don't think that Yelp ever caught on in my country, maybe even Europe in general.

Truth and thank you for posting it so we could see. This forum is effective in finding news related to Bitcoin or Crypto-currency in general.

That is really important, because the more sites that use it. The better it will be for all of us - Since we want the price to rise, even secretly someday. Also for the Blockchain technology, since the more widely used Bitcoin is, the more recognized and widely used Blockchain itself will be i believe.

If we pay really close attention that detail should become clear. This new feature could help Bitcoin in the short-term also sure. I have more of a HODLER mindset and i will keep it until the end of times.

Their online offering suffered when Google lowered their search ranking, in order that people should use google to find things rather than Yelp, along with moving advertising to google.

I think this initiative is much like Overstock's back in the day. Try to find new customers that Google is ignoring.

It's not easy to find merchants that accept crypto on Google - so perhaps going to Yelp and using their filter will become a thing in this community.

Ah okay, I thought it might have something to do with their shady business practices, but your theory definitely makes a lot of sense as well.
It's definitely an interesting strategy to try and cater to a niche market, which will potentially grow into something bigger.

Can't say that I'm opposed to the idea of it, I actually wish that Tripadvisor would do something similar.

I've heard about Yelp, but till this article I wasn't even sure what it was. The idea to make a database of facilities that accept Bitcoin as payment sounds pretty cool to me, though. If it's a worldwide base, I might as well start using Yelp now Cheesy
I think it's a mutually beneficial move. Yelp will get more users from people interested in cryptocurrencies, and Bitcoin will become more adopted, since more people will see it as method of payment.

I've heard about Yelp, but till this article I wasn't even sure what it was.

In the olden days (pre internet) it used to be known as Yellow Pages - a big thick yellow directory that listed every single business in your area, and had a lot of adverts in there for the businesses. You had a unique directory for every city and town and they used to post a copy through every single household.

Once the internet got started, they tried to go online as Yelp.

But after a few years, google lowered their search ranking to make it harder to find Yelp and easier for Google to have it's own local listings at the top of the page.

I think this crypto filter is a good idea for Yelp to fight back, as it is hard to find businesses that accept bitcoin on google.

Do a lot of people still use Yelp?
Yeah, many people use it. Some store even pays someone to create a positive review there. I mean do Tripadvisor have Auto Service section? No, they don't.

It's not necessarily just mass adoption.

Right now, I'd say that adoption levels for bitcoin as a speculative investment are already quite widespread, while bitcoin's utility as a currency is still yet to be proven. Mass adoption as bitcoin as a medium of exchange and long term store of value is what matters most.

Although it may incentivise more merchants into accepting bitcoin as a payment option to gain more attention, I doubt that this is an initiative that is going to all of a sudden drive people crazy into adopting bitcoin and pay with it, it's not like people who had bitcoin didn't know where to find bitcoin accepting merchants in the first place. Mass adoption is driven by much more than a single company's decisions, though this is obviously welcome one.

I remember for a short while on Yelp, there was a Bitcoin option under 'More Features' that notified you of local business accepting Bitcoin.
Just checking now, I dont see that option anymore but it only makes sense to offer this function.
Even though I do use Yelp on occasion, I wouldnt necessarily go to a restaurant that accept Bitcoin because i do not want to spend my coins.

We need every country in the world or at least most countries in the world to legalize bitcoin, this is the only efficient way to see mass adoption and if we pay more attention we realize that the years pass but we do not hear some parents legalize bitcoin. The question here is: what can we do to persuade governments to legalize bitcoin.

Report: India Considers Complete Ban on Digital Currencies

we are a long way from seeing mass adoption

That's a cool thing but as I know Yelp is considered as a "local" service where people are looking for someone nearby. For example for a groomer it is a stupid move to accept crypto as a payment simply because there is probably not much of BTC accepting services around you and you would have to exchange those coins to fiat in order to use them.
The situation could be different if you could someone from another countries for services.

I haven't heard enough about Yelp so I did some research about it. So far, I have read positive reviews about it since it's really convenient and efficient to use. If every country would know the importance of bitcoin, I'm sure that people would also choose Yelp as their mode of payment I'm sure that it would reflect the growth and volume of bitcoin in the market.

Yelp is super popular in the United States, so this initiative is definitely good for Bitcoin. I just checked, but I don't see this option when using Yelp on my browser. I wonder why.

Do a lot of people still use Yelp?
Yeah, many people use it. Some store even pays someone to create a positive review there. I mean do Tripadvisor have Auto Service section? No, they don't.

You say that as if it's something positive... Who wants to use a review website that receives payments to create good reviews...
That's what I meant with shady business practices. Well, also the fact that they receive payments to remove bad reviews.

Haven't heard that about Tripadvisor...

This is a superficial view of Yelp. They do not create reviews. They have a business plan where businesses can filter out some reviews, but this does not allow them to filter out all bad reviews. Yelp works pretty well in the U.S. I use it very often, I posted many reviews, and I have always been very happy with the results of my searches and the community itself.

And Yelp is very different from Tripadvisor. The latter is for tourists, the first is for locals. If I check Tripadvisor in my city, I'll find places that are so touristy that I would never visit. Yelp gives me all the most updated restaurants and shops.
