You're right this isn't the best way to spend money but it offers a similar risk-reward ratio to dice or most other games. A 5 dollar ticket gives you a low chance to win a million but a dice game gives you high chance to win another 5 dollars. If you look at it from a perspective it's all the same especially when you lose your five on a 50% dice roll.

Maybe btc are not value much on those old days but they are very much high value these days. You should not have wasted them in lottery. Even the tokens earned can be of good value in the future. We never know if any token get listed on big exchanges and changes our fortune.

I think Bitcoin can and should be used for everything ideally.    The conundrum you have is that if Bitcoin were used for nothing, just stuck away doing nothing then its worth would surely drop and might even prove inferior to the alt coins you mention.

Bitcoin is transactional,  some ancient asset like gold is what they store in the 1930's in a vault and never move since.   The reason they can play this trick with gold is with the company that owns it and just retains the value on a balance sheet, like a cheque they keep writing out gold notes to give to people at varying prices.   Bitcoin I dont think can be stored away in this way, it is transactional.  

The Bitcoin is both the asset and the means to settle the balance of the trade, never using Bitcoin would mean you lose the value I'm fairly sure as it is not centralised or monetised via notes of credit.
