Google has discovered a Zero-Day Vulnerability [CVE-2019-5786] that is being exploited by bad actors. If you are a Chrome user, you are at risk. Make sure your browser has been updated to the latest patched version [73.0.3683.103], which fixes the vulnerability.

Google posted an update last week addressing security vulnerability that hackers were exploiting in the wild. “Google is aware of reports that an exploit for CVE-2019-5786 exists in the wild,” the report read.


Justin Schuh, Google Chrome's security lead and engineering director, warned users to immediately update Chrome browser after the critical bug was discovered. “Also, seriously, update your Chrome installs... like right this minute. #PSA,” Schuch tweeted.

The vulnerability, which affects the browser in Windows, Mac, and Linux, was reported by Clement Lecigne of Google’s Threat Analysis Group on February 27.

What are zero-day vulnerabilities?

A zero-day or 0day vulnerability is a bug or flaw in a code that has been discovered and disclosed but not yet patched. You can also call them unknown vulnerabilities, because they aren’t discovered by software vendors until the software has already been released.

Once a bug is discovered, software vendors have a very limited time (zero days) in which they need to fix the issue. Until they release a patch, it is considered a “zero day” vulnerability. If there is exploit code available for that vulnerability, it’s a “zero day” exploit, with “zero” referring to the number of days since a patch has been available to the public.

Google Chrome 73.0.3683.103 addresses CVE-2019-5786, a Use-After-Free (UAF) vulnerability in FileReader, an application programming interface (API) included in browsers to allow web applications to read the contents of files stored on a user’s computer.

To patch this vulnerability, you just need to update your chrome browser by following these quick steps:

1. Open your browser and type, chrome://settings/help

2. Click Relaunch

3. After relaunch, Google will show you the updated version which is 73.0.3683.103

after i read the article and it turns out that the article is from March so there is a new version for google chrome

This info is out of date. The latest version of Chrome is 74. Any people who've updated to the latest version should not be exposed to the risk.

There was no security issue or whatsoever in firefox.

Mozilla just didn't update their SSL certificate properly in time. Therefore the warning appeared that the add-ons couldn't be verified (because certificate invalid).
But there hasn't been any vulnerabilities or anything else security-related.

My understanding is that most browsers update automatically. So if you're using Chrome presumably your system will get updates.

Otherwise try a different browser. Brave works pretty well for me.

Thus, they already have an update that re-enable the extensions and plugins so everything is still working fine. Just don't install extensions that you think might compromise your crypto wallets and as much as possible use separate desktop for your crypto stuff.

How to update your Chrome browser

1. Open your browser and type, chrome://settings/help

Instead of typing all that it is easier to click on the three arrows on the upper right corner of your Chrome browser > Scroll down to Help > Click on About Google Chrome and the same site opens where you can manually update the browser in case it is us out-of-date.

In Firefox user can choose to automatically install updates / or that browser check for update but let you choose to install update. Check Chrome settings for updates, and set what is most suitable for you. You can also check manually for updates anytime by click on Help -> About.

The best and safest way to update your Google chrome is through play store which will give you the certified version that will provide you with the necessary securities and safety on the internet be careful of pitching site that may steal your informations.

Either way this was a good reminder to keep Chrome updated. I just updated my browser right now, so even if the information he gave was outdated, it was of help. I use a Chromebook and it's my understanding it updates on every reboot, but interestingly I just did a browser update that took some time that I'm unsure would be done on a reboot.
