For a long time, e-mail has been widely used in information network thanks to its efficiency, security and cross-platform capability, and has become one of the fundamental network services. Meanwhile, the emerging of value network represented by bitcoin and other digital currencies has made it possible to remit currencies across platforms within the whole network. Although e-mail and digital currency share natural similarities, such as anonymity, low latency, barrier-free cross-platform transmission and, irretrievability after sending, there are still no services that integrate them. This product, through the combination of e-mail and digital currency, enables simultaneous cross-platform transmission capability of both information and value for the first time, which facilitates the integration and development of today’s information network and emerging value network.

From a historical perspective, postal and remittances have a natural connection point, and the main difference between them is whether they are transmitting information or value. In early days, people used postal remittances as the main means of remittance. With the development of banking industry, remittances gradually turns into telegraph, whose typical application is SWIFT, which is still widely used for cross-border remittances. Later on, post industry gradually integrated with banking industry, which resulted in postal bank and other institutions.

With further development of communication methods, the remittance carrier gradually turned into telecommunications and Internet, whose typical representatives are telephone banking and online banking. Due to the limitation of traditional paper account, the “Internatelization” of bank is not thorough. People still need to use complex account numbers, payees and clearing numbers when making remittance, while the main improvement is that the handwritten form is converted into electronic form. The emergence of bank cards makes the payment process simple and fast, however as it is still based on bank account, such approach is still an intermediate form between paper and network, not totally for Internet.

As information network appeared first, the development of related industries is still dominated by information, which results in the separation of information and value transmission. As a means of information transmission entirely carried by Internet, e-mail can be transmitted in the entire network completely independent from the physical entity, while third-party payment method, which is popular today and the closest form to Internet, still needs to rely on bank system, i.e. bank card based on traditional paper account. In other words, third-party payment only expresses the value in form of information, rather than storing and transmit value in network, which results in the disconnection of information and value transmission capabilities.

To industries, on the information network, after the emergence of e-mail, there have been e-commerce, online payment, instant messaging and cloud computing, etc.. These business models have been developed rapidly and, virtualized and digitalized most of social resources, thereafter the Big Data becomes the backbone of business. However, in value network, industries still rely on banking system to perform inefficient regional support and, it is difficult to obtain time efficiency and radiation capability within the whole network just like information network. In another word, although “internet thinking” has been realized on information network, there is still “physical thinking” on value network. As a matter of different dimensions, the efficiency and vitality of network are much greater than the latter, just like the difference between an airplane and a car: the long-distance transmission capability of flight realized by “height” in the three-dimensional world is much higher than that of a car, which is only on the ground, or say in a two-dimensional world.

If we say information network is equivalent to human nervous system, then big data and cloud computing are similar to human brain and, their importance is beyond doubt. At the same time, the blood circulation system at the network level is still “stored” in bank in physical form, making it difficult to balance the development of the network ecosystem as a whole. In other words, to a highly developed nervous system which relies on a weak blood system to provide nutrients, it is hard to imagine that such a system can function properly.

The emergence of digital currencies such as Bitcoin has made the network-based “blood circulation system” possible. As the cornerstone of value network, digital currency and e-mail share similar characteristics and, the main difference is whether value or information is transmitted. In this sense, digital currency and e-mail are equivalent to the online version of postal remittances, and the former one is completely independent of the latter one. Digital currency promotes the bank’s paper system to network system and, promotes a third-party payment system which contains a single channel or a small number of channels to a system that contains a large number of mutually reciprocal remittance channels, just like upgrading a straight line into a plane. A similar digital currency development path can be expected with reference to the development of e-mail.

As the bottom layer of digital currency,  although the characteristics of blockchain technology such as non-tampering are applicable to many fields, for example legal confirmation and source traceability, its core value still lies in digital currency. The use of legal confirmation and other purposes belong to information network fundamentally. Therefore the blockchain technology for such purpose is just a branch of database technology. In other words, even without blockchain, a similar result can still be achieved by other means, that is, the blockchain technology does not have much technical or cost advantage. However, in the field of digital currency, the use of blockchain belongs to the construction of a new value network, which has the effect that other technologies cannot achieve, and its significance far exceeds database technology. On this basis, the total amount of digital currency is not limited by certain economic policies, but only to make it rare to get value.

Therefore, we try to take the first small step into the integration of information network and value network, namely the FINMAIL Mailbox and Outlook Add-in. It is believed that with the development of technology and the maturity of regulation, related applications will bring increasing value to society and business and, become the cornerstone of more fields.

The technology involved in this application has applied for relevant patents.

You need to rephrase the topic and the site, the idea looks beautiful but the implementation is bad:
Many images do not work, choosing interface makes reading a lot of difficult words, colors, and fonts.
Also, publish short links to the adds-on and some information about them here as an alternative to this lengthy introduction.
Good luck.

This can be a good idea to explore. Just imagine that instead of hearing "You've got mail" it would now be "You've got Bitcoin" but then again how the market can be reacting to this alternative would be dependent on many factors. I am just wondering if this technology can be really secured especially in the face of many hacks that affected many big exchanges. How can we make sure that the email with the Bitcoin can arrive safely at its destination with the Bitcoin intact?

Thank you for the comments. We are very happy that you think this is a good idea.

The post has been updated to show the short url and abstract. As the article is kind of "knowledge marketing", probably it is better to leave it here, so that those who want to know the background can get the whole knowledge from the post without opening a new page.

The website seems to work fine on Chrome on Windows and iPhone. All images can be downloaded and displayed properly from our side. Therefore could you please give some more details about the site issue, i.e. which page has the problem and what images/texts cannot be displayed properly? Once verified, we'll try to fix them as soon as possible.

The security risk is always there. It is very important, but should not be a big issue. For example, to today's cloud technology, security is also the first priority. To any company or individual, if they move their internal documents to the cloud, they also run the risk of information leakage due to potential server or cloud provider issue. However, on one hand, the architecture of cloud is so advanced and flexible, which makes people "have to" move their valuable documents to it to reduce cost. On the other hand, cloud service providers also have mature security measures today, otherwise no one will use cloud.

To this point, cloud service provider is similar to digital currency exchange, while the former one is to host all types of information with different value and, the latter one is mainly to host private keys with high value. If cloud is secure enough, why can't exchange, or FINMAIL be secure enough? In addition, even though there are some big exchanges got hacked, there are still some survivors today, which shows the possibility of being highly secure.

The technology which enables email with the Bitcoin to arrive safely is a big topic. Probably we can discuss later when the patent is published.

BTW, as the project is based on email, we can also imagine the message like "You've got mail with Bitcoin".

I have read the whole user guide and the idea is good itself. It's good for the average guy but while reading the introduction I was thinking when the companies need to send a partial refund. It needs to have more currencies used, and the (maybe) downside I found (sorry) it's it can be used only with Microsoft web or desktop email.

Just out of curiosity, do you have a plan to make the addon compatible with other brands (Google and friends) or open source client?

People might be more willing to store their sensitive information on "Cloud services" but storing their money on these services would be a tricky ask. Bitcoin services <Wallets & Exchanges> are constantly under attack by hackers and criminals and a lot of them have suffered huge losses and loads of bad publicity, when these services got hacked.

The negativity and bad publicity in the media already fuelled the fears of most people towards Crypto currencies, so you will have a humongous task to educate people and beef up the security of this plug-in to get people to trust this with their money.  Wink

Good luck with this project, you are going to need it.  Wink

Thank you for the comments, which are quite valuable.

To solve the partial refund issue, it is true that due to the relatively low transaction speed and high fee of Bitcoin, more currencies need to be introduced, for example LTC and USDT, etc. In this way, we are using the "remittance" or "clearing" approach, which is also how email is working.

Alternatively, some semi-centralized or centralized mechanisms can also be introduced, for example lighting network and third-party service. In this way, the value transfer is kind of "payment", which is usually faster and fault-tolerant. However, the network covered by payment service is usually smaller than email. Therefore these approaches will be good supplement to the add-in, but the foundation will still be digital currency.

The current support for Microsoft email is due to the fact that Outlook/Hotmail has wider acceptance globally than Gmail, although Gmail has more users than Outlook. In addition, the development environment for Outlook is very mature, which makes is easy for us to turn the idea into production. After the add-in for Outlook/Hotmail, we will naturally continue the development for other brands including Gmail, if the market turns out to be valuable.

It might be true that it will be a humongous task to make people trust the add-in and their online money (personally I do not like this word). However just like online payment 20 years ago and, cloud service 10 years ago, the change of publicity in internet age is always faster than old days. In addition, regardless the publicity, if the project is really a cornerstone, it will be able to show the beneficial value to the society, which we believe so.

There is definitely a need for Bitcoin wallet add-ons for webmail and online email providers, because it already has a huge userbase and people in 3rd world countries need a easy way to send and receive Bitcoin. <The email concept is easy enough to understand, so the incorporation of a payment option in Crypto currency with their email, will go a long way to make Bitcoin adoption easier in these countries.>

It would be great if this can be linked to the Lightning Network, so that people can make cheap micro payments via their webmail accounts.  Tongue

Good luck with the project.  Wink

Is there a way you can attach this as a Chrome extension so it works well with the in-browser mail services like Gmail/Yahoo? I didn't read the entire essay but from what it looks like one can easily plug in your product client based mailing services.

It's hard to read all those massive paragraphs without images or good fonts. Please make your product page more interesting.

Thank you for the messages. It is a very good idea to develop a Chrome extension to support Gmail/Yahoo. Presently we are still focusing on the add-in for Hotmail/Outlook. Once the product is basically shaped, we will consider extending to support other platforms.

Technically, to Gmail, it has a built-in add-in system, so it is probably easier to extend the support for it. However to Yahoo, it seems the webmail does not support third-party add-in. Therefore it may be required to develop the add-in at browser level, i.e. Chrome extensions, in order to bypass the limitation of Yahoo mail.

Also sorry for the massive paragraph, which might be kind of technical specification/white paper instead of product introduction. We'll try to improve the content in our website to make it more intuitive and elegant.

On the other hand, we are also planning to introduce other coins, i.e. USDT, to the add-in. Bitcoin is always the first one needs to support. However, just like the most expensive wine is not for drinking and, the most expensive watch is not for timing, the most expensive coin, i.e. Bitcoin, may not be the best one for remittance/payment. Therefore in addition to Bitcoin, it seems we also need to have a stable coin in the system to make it more practical.

The support for Lightning Network is very interesting and, we’ll consider it when the basic modeling of the product is done.

Anyway, thank you again for your kind idea and comments. Hope we can make it a great product together.

Monthly Update:
1. Improved UI interface and introduction
2. Improved user account management. For example a user can hide all his/her account information by signing out. To sign in, a user needs to enter his/her Finmail password. In addition, a user can change either password, backup mailbox or both at the same time.
3. Support 2 types of internal transfer: transfer by BTC address and transfer by email address. If the receiving BTC or email address belongs to another Finmail user, the transfer between them will be internal and, completed immediately without fee. If the receiving BTC address does not belong to a Finmail user, traditional Bitcoin transfer will be taken with normal transaction fee.
4. Support selecting and calculating external transaction fee by speed, totally 4 levels at the moment.
5. Improved system architecture to provide high availability, strong security and low latency.

The Finmail Add-in for Outlook and Hotmail has been approved by Microsoft and, is available through Office Store

We have a great news that, the Finmail add-in for Outlook and Hotmail has been approved by Microsoft recently. Anyone can install it through Office Store.

The approve procedure takes more than 2 months in total, with several changes and improvements regarding user privacy, server stability, asset security and ease of use, etc. For example, as to financial security, all Finmail add-in users are required to create a Finmail account, sign in before using and sign out after using.

To make the add-in more applicable and convenient, we kindly request you to try the Finmail add-in and give some feedback. Our current priority is still to introduce a stability coin like USDT to the add-in, while taking account into other features like improving text templates inserted to the email content.

For more details about installation please refer to https://www.finmail.com/technical-support

Thank you for your support.

The link that you give in the original post is dead, it links to a 404 now.

This looks kind of interesting? I guess it is useful to send payments at the same time as an email, so I guess it could save some time. What kind of security measures do you have implemented? Is it possible to, say if you're in an office, sit at the desk of someone with this Outlook extension installed and send all of their wallet contents to an address you control, or is there password/phrase protection?

Dissertation was about threat modelling on distributed ledgers.

Thank you for the comment, which is highly valuable.

We have fixed the link, which should be working now.

Regarding security, it is true that there is a password protection when accessing an Outlook user's Finmail account. In the user guide at https://www.finmail.com/user-guide there is a statement that:

"To prevent someone from pretending to be you to reset your password when you are away from using email client, use a mailbox that cannot be viewed through your current email client, i.e. Hotmail/Outlook, as backup mailbox."

The overall system design is similar to a combination of online banking and digital currency: Finmail brings hypertext communication capability to both systems. In addition, Finmail brings borderless value transmission capability to online banking system, while it enables digital currency user to use email address as sender/receiver's payment address as well as their identifier. Therefore, we hope the new system will make collaborations based on Internet easier and, improve productivity.

The current add-in is still at early stage and, we are trying to make it more convenient. If you are interested in, you are welcome to give user experience feedback, improvement proposals or even code review, through our open tasks 1 and 2, i.e. https://www.finmail.com/post/task-1-finmail-add-in-survey. You may also get reward, although may not be as much as Bitcoin trading Wink
