Hi,
I'm an I.T. Engineering student and I was asking myself , why is the source code required in order to let a pool start mining a currency?
Thanks in advance for the answers.

It's not but if you want people to trust you and your coin you must provide it.

First of all, dealing with crypto currencies without having access to the source code (and being able to compile everything from scratch) is generally a bad idea.

Second, a closed source program might not have the needed functionality to split the management of blocks (done by the pool) and computation of hashes (done by the pool miners).

Third, this is a pretty weird question to come up with to "ask yourself". Most likely there has been discussion in which the topic came up, and if someone else stated this requirement in a specific situation, that person would be the right one to ask why he/she requires it.
