How realistic is it for us to ask someone who spends just a couple hours here every week browsing through the marketplace to create a fully customized trust list?

There must be another, better solution

There isn't and there shouldn't be. Trust should be something they (the someone you speak of) should take personal and not rely on the forum for suggestions. It isn't a must to customize your trustlist in a day. lets say they spend minimum 20mins browsing through the marketplace board, there's nothing wrong in using two weeks or even more to customize your list i.e taking note of at least one trustable user daily until you get at least 10 to make a perfect list and they can always adjust the list to their taste. You don't even have to trade with them, their past/present records of forum activeness (scam busting) can be used for your judgement to determine if they're worthy to be included on your custom trust list and if they turn out to be the opposite you exclude them.

They could just add theymos to their trust settings and call it a day.

I don’t think this is a good solution. It will have many of the same pitfalls as the current trust system has.

Its called use another forum/ subreddit. If you don't like it. no one is forcing you to stay here

+1 , picking someone randomly from that list or all is not at all good solution. Then I guess user should use default trust in these case.

Well you've been around quite a while and you've interacted with a number of members here--at least through posts, which I remember reading.  Surely there must be some members you'd trust enough to put them on your custom list, even if you wouldn't necessarily trust them with your life or large sums of money.  It's not like a custom trust list has to be extensive.

For new members, I can see that this could be an issue when you don't even know who anyone is.  But it's not the end of the world if they just use a suggested list temporarily.  They might not even care about the trust system at all.

Its called use another forum/ subreddit. If you don't like it. no one is forcing you to stay here
Now, now, he was asking a genuine question although I don't think OP seriously would have a problem creating his own trust list.  I think he's been a member here long enough to know at least who NOT to trust and probably has a short list of candidates for inclusions in his own list.

You have a point, but I don't think that's so difficult to build personal trust list, even if you spend little time here. I don't even trade here, but despite that there are some people which I trust even without interacting directly with them. I trust in their judgement and if I would need to buy something from them, I would go first without using escrow. But I haven't created my personal trust list so far and I'm not going to do that. I'm just fine with default list more or less.
Current trust system is far from being perfect, but nobody haven't offered  nothing better. If you have ideas, I'm sure theymos would be interested to hear it. I've see different trust systems working well on other forums. But it doesn't that would work well on Bitcointalk. This forum is just too complicated I think.

It takes about 2 minutes, and maybe 15-30 seconds of upkeep whenever you think about it. Just remove default trust, add a couple individual people that you feel you can trust their feedback, and then add or remove a name as needed. You don't need to worry about having the best possible list that encompasses everyone that you'd like to set as trustworthy. If you are browsing through and see a post from someone you missed, just update it.
