Are you forgetting about all the altcoins that outperformed bitcoin.  Ethereum did over a 1000x and absolutely outpaced bitcoin's gains during that time.  As much as I love bitcoin it is a lot easier to make high gains on low cap altcoins.

If you use the same argument for the original bitcoin then the community support behind it is what differs.
