Help us archive history in-the-making, forever!

Welcome to the Decentralised Public Library’s archiving campaign!

Reward: $5,000 USD every two weeks, plus $2,000 USD in special awards, given in AR or equivalent.

Task: Archive online records of history in-the-making, breaking news, and current events on the Arweave blockchain, for use by future historians.

Updated 8th November 2019:
  • The new archiving period (round 9) began at 12.01pm CET November 6th.
  • The special topics will be: Brexit, the Hong Kong protests, the current conflict in northern Syria, and the terms of service/privacy policies of technology companies, online service providers, or web apps.
  • This is a three-week archiving period instead of the usual two weeks, ending at 11.59am CET on the 27th of November 2019. The payout date for round 9 will therefore be the 4th of December 2019. Because this is a three-week archiving period the rewards pool will be worth $7,500 USD, instead of the usual $5,000 USD.
  • Archivers can choose to be paid in either on AR or ETH, the Arweave network’s native token. Those choosing AR will get a 10% bonus to the USD value of their payout!

The Mission

Together, Arweave and the Decentralised Public Library are on a mission to permanently preserve history, and we need your help. Our goal is to archive vital historical and cultural information on a blockchain - far beyond the reach of censorship, deletion, or alteration. Today, too often online information is accidentally lost, secretly erased, or intentionally altered, eroding the ability of citizens to hold those in power accountable, and hindering our ability to understand what is happening in the world around us.

Arweave is a blockchain-based permanent storage network, and is the backbone of the permaweb. The permaweb provides truly uncensorable preservation of web content. Together with you, our community, we will be harnessing the power of the permaweb to build a truly permanent archive of human history, knowledge, and experience.

In short, we will pay you to archive historical content, current events, international affairs, and all things history in-the-making.

By participating, you’ll be rewarded while you add to a vast catalogue of permaweb content, which will be permanently available to future generations looking to better understand our world today.

The Archiving Campaign

In short, we will pay you to archive pieces of history!

Whether it is history as we know it today, or even history in-the-making, we need your help to permanently preserve evidence of it.

Recently, we have been trialing a small series of crowd-sourced archiving campaigns within the blockchain and cryptocurrency communities. It’s been a fascinating learning experience, and has confirmed to us that crowd-sourcing knowledge collation and exchange is the most effective way forward in creating this permanent archive of human history.

Including crowd-sourcing in knowledge curation efforts offers a range of robust benefits to any archive or library. Importantly, it allows for a very broad range of perspectives, experiences, and demographics (and the consequent diversity of ideas and interests) to be represented in the resultant collections or archives.

Here at the Decentralised Public Library, we’re a small team striving hard towards an ambitious goal. Crowdsourcing our knowledge curation efforts helps us get much more important information archived than we would be able to without the help of our rapidly-growing archival community.

While helping us achieve our archival goals, we also have the wonderful opportunity to grow a community around archiving history together! To facilitate the growth of this community, we encourage you to join the Decentralised Public Library Discord server, so we can all chat together about the pieces of history we are passionate about.

So, we are now launching an ongoing archiving campaign open to all!

The Campaign Rules & Process

The task: Use the Arweave web extension to archive web content relating to world events, international affairs, breaking news, and other web pages and PDFs that are likely to be history-in-the-making.

If you’re not sure what to archive, check the FAQs at the bottom of this post.

The Instructions:
  • Please read all of the rules to ensure you can receive a reward!
  • Install the free Arweave web extension here on Chrome or Brave, or here on Firefox, which is a combined token wallet and a web page archiving tool. Learn how to archive web pages with this handy user guide.
  • Claim a free Arweave wallet from http://tokens.arweave.org with a token to get started!
  • Fill in this Google form to register for the campaign. Here, you can indicate if you’d like to be paid in AR or ETH. If you have already filled out this form before, you don’t need to do it again.
  • Join our Discord server to chat with us and the community, to be the first to receive all updates, get tokens for archiving, and to ask any questions you have!
  • Hunt down unique web pages relating to history in-the-making (see the FAQs for more details), and archive them! There are four special topics which you receive extra rewards for archiving: the Hong Kong protests and political upheaval, Brexit, and the current conflict in northern Syria.
  • Every day, you must report the archives you wish to be rewarded for in this Google form. If you want to be considered for the special topic prizes and rewards, you need to make sure you select the correct special topic option from the drop-down menu in the Google form. The forms allow for reporting up to 50 transactions in one report, so if you wish to report more than 50 in one day you should submit another form with the extra transaction IDs - there is no daily limit to how many archives you are allowed to report! You don’t have to submit 50 per day - you can submit fewer if you want. You can also nominate one archive per day each for the general topic and for the special topics to be considered for the $500 USD ‘best submission’ prize. Although please note that in round 9 there is no additional prize for the special topic of terms of service/privacy policies, though naturally these submissions will all be considered for the usual archiving rewards.
  • Do not submit the same transaction ID multiple times. This includes any transaction IDs that you nominate for special prizes.
  • Once per day, you must submit one report to this thread containing all archived web pages or PDFs you wish to report that day (including any special topic archives). See the template report below as an example of a correctly formatted report. Remember, if you are in doubt about what you can & can’t archive, check the FAQs below, and send me a DM on our Discord server to arweave-india.
  • In your daily reports, you can nominate one of your transaction IDs to win this payout period’s contest prize of ‘best submission’ for the general topic. If you are submitting archives for the special topic, you should also nominate one of these archives for consideration for the ‘best submission’ for the relevant special topic. We will consider your nominated transaction IDs for this prize, alongside others’ nominations!
  • If you run out of tokens, DM arweave-india on our Discord server to request a top up.
  • After a round closes, we calculate your rewards and any prizes you have won, and send them to your AR wallet address or ETH address, depending on how you have chosen to be paid.

You can earn rewards by referring fellow passionate archivers to the campaign! If you invite a friend and they successfully receive archiving rewards, you get extra rewards too - an extra $0.10 USD (in AR or ETH) per valid archived page they submit in their first payout period. Make sure they report your wallet address when they sign up to the campaign, as per the rules section.

Contests & Prizes:
In addition to the per-page archiving rewards, there are also special prizes on offer each payout period. There are six prizes to win in round 9:

For the special topic of the current protests and political upheaval in Hong Kong:

This archive might be the most historically important, the most interesting, or the most creative submission! Please note that the winning archive will be chosen only from those you nominate to be considered for the prize.
  • Best Archiver! Every payout period the Decentralised Public Library and Arweave teams will select a winner for the prize of best overall archiver from everyone who submits content about the Brexit special topic. This person will receive an additional $350 USD (in AR or ETH) on top of their other rewards. This person’s archives throughout the payout period have been of consistently high quality, interesting, and from varied sources.

For the special topic of the current conflict in northern Syria:
  • The Editor’s Pick! Every payout period the core Decentralised Public Library and Arweave teams will pick their favourite archive from submissions for the special topic of Brexit, and the archiver will receive an additional $350 USD (in AR or ETH) on top of their other rewards. This archive might be the most historically important, the most interesting, or the most creative submission! Please note that the winning archive will be chosen only from those you nominate to be considered for the prize.
  • Best Archiver! Every payout period the Decentralised Public Library and Arweave teams will select a recipient for the prize of best overall archiver from everyone who submits content about the current conflict in northern Syria. This person’s archives throughout the payout period have been of consistently high quality, interesting, and from varied sources.

Note that in round 9 there is no additional prize for the terms of service/privacy policies special topic.

The Rules:
For archiving:
  • Pay very careful attention to these rules for every page that you archive! We will be checking transactions, and All rule-breaking archives will be excluded from rewards calculations. Plus, for every infringing archive, you will receive a 10% penalty to your total reward. This means that breaking a rule could have serious consequences, so please take care and feel free to check with the team if you’re in doubt about something.
  • Don’t archive copyright-infringing content. Focus on 'primary source' and ‘original source’ content (government reports, tweets etc). To be sure of a website’s copyright and duplication or archiving policy, check their terms & conditions - usually you can find a link to this in the footer of their web page. If you are in doubt about the copyright status of a page, you can check with by direct messaging the team on the Decentralised Public Library Discord server. One tip is to look for: open data, open government data, creative commons-licensed content, and open access content.
  • Do not use the web extension to archive paywalled content, or otherwise break any website’s terms of use.
  • Don’t archive people’s personal data, such as Facebook or LinkedIn profiles.
  • You must use the wallet address you claimed from https://tokens.arweave.org to archive your web pages, otherwise we will not be able to reward you (this is to help avoid duplicate participation). If you have a problem with this, please contact me (@arweave-india) on our Discord server. You must only use one Arweave wallet for the campaign.
  • You must complete the required Google form before you begin to be eligible for campaign rewards.
  • You must report your transactions in both the daily report Google form (you can select general topic or any of the special topics from a down down menu), and also in the Bitcointalk.org thread to be eligible for rewards.
  • You must be respectful to your fellow community members and campaign administrators.
  • You must archive the web pages yourself. The use of multiple accounts is not permitted and may result in a ban.
  • We reserve the right to disqualify any participant deemed to be acting in bad faith, acting against the spirit of the campaign, or those repeatedly breaking rules.
  • We reserve the right to alter the campaign rules, and will update this post if changes occur.
  • Do not archive duplicate content. Do not submit duplicate transaction IDs. If you nominate a transaction for a prize in the Google form, do not enter that ID again - no duplicates are required.
  • The Arweave network does not currently support video storage, so please do not archive pages where all or most of the content is contained in a video, as the video file will not be archived and therefore the page is of limited value to future historians.
  • Your report numbers should re-start at 1 when each new archiving period begins. For example, this new archiving period begins at 12:01 noon CET on Wednesday the 6th of November 2019, so your report on Wednesday afternoon should be labelled as ‘report 1’ even if you have participated in previous archiving periods or rounds. This helps us a lot with making sure we get the correct rewards to you per archiving period.
  • Do not use services such as 'printfriendly' (that creates a PDF/print preview of a webpage) to archive content. Only archive the original page.

For referring:
If you refer a friend and want to receive rewards for this, they must include your Arweave wallet address in their Google form submission when they register to participate. So, make sure you encourage them to submit your address when they sign up! Here is the link for you to share the registration form with a friend: https://forms.gle/UPV1x7YQ2Uip3GgFA.

Frequently Asked Questions

We’ll add to this list of FAQs as the campaign progresses, so feel free to ask any and all questions in this thread!

What type of content should I archive for the general topic?

We recommend you archive primary sources (AKA original sources) only. For example: government statements or reports; tweets; parliamentary debates or proceedings; official original source press/media statements from individuals, governments, or companies; primary source proof of breaking news events; open access scientific proceedings or other open access publications about current events, etc.

If you read a news article about something you find interesting, don’t archive the article itself, find the original source documents, perspectives, or statements the article is based on.

If you are in doubt about what you can and can’t archive, join our Discord server and DM me your questions! My username is arweave-india and I’ll be happy to help.

What type of content should I archive for the special topics?

For this archiving period (round 9, from the 6th of November to the 27th of November), you should archive content relating to: the current political upheaval, protests, and anti-government sentiment in Hong Kong; content relating to Brexit - the events concerning the UK’s departure from the European Union; and content relating to the current conflict in northern Syria. First-hand/first-person accounts, photographs, tweets, etc., are welcomed (provided you follow the copyright rules as usual). Official government or politicians’ statements are also welcomed, and they will likely prove very interesting to future historians. Additionally, as introduced to round 9 on the 11th of November, for the terms of service/privacy policies special topic you should archive the terms of service/terms and conditions/user agreements and privacy policies of technology companies, online services or web apps.

What type of content shouldn’t I archive?

It is important that you do not archive copyrighted content, and that you only archive primary/original sources. For example, we recommend that you do not archive newspaper articles or most news websites, because their content is often both copyrighted and also a secondary source (read about what a secondary source is here). Content such as a Wikipedia page on ‘History’ as an abstract concept is not sufficient to receive a reward.

It is important to only archive high quality content that meets the rules. We will be checking transactions, and if you have made an archiving transaction that breaks the rules, you will not be eligible for rewards or special prizes.

If you are in doubt about what you can and can’t archive, join our Discord server and DM me your questions! My username is arweave-india and I’ll be happy to help.

How can I check copyright on a web page?

It’s your responsibility to check the copyright on a web page. If, during our checks, you are found to have archived copyrighted content, we will not be able to give you any rewards or prizes, so be careful!

You should check the ‘terms and conditions’ or ‘terms of use’ page of a website if you are unsure (you can usually find this in the footer of a webpage), it will detail what the site's copyright/intellectual property policies are. Often, websites that are sharing- and archiving-friendly will use a creative commons licence of some kind on their terms page, which usually means you can archive it without breaking copyright. Also, content released under open government licences, and open access licences are typically safe to archive.

Like I mentioned above, if you are in doubt, shoot me a DM (arweave-india) on our Discord server!

Can I archive pages in any language, or from any country?

Yes! Content does not have to be English-language. As with all archives or collections of human history, it's important to have a wide range of societies, people, and countries represented.

Help, I’ve run out of tokens!

Simply join our Discord server and drop me a direct message (my username is arweave-india) and we’ll be happy to top up your wallet

How do I archive a web page?

Check out our full beginners’ guide to archiving here for a step-by-step guide.

What is Arweave?

The Arweave network offers truly permanent, on-chain data storage - we’re working to build the permaweb! It’s just like the traditional web, but it’s permanent! Read more here.

What is the Decentralised Public Library?

We are an Arweave initiative, focused on creating a permanent, hand-curated archive of human history and knowledge on a blockchain! Check out our mission statement blog post here.

So, let's get going, and archive some future history together!

How can I archive web pages if I have 0 tokens?

Perhaps you generated a brand new, empty wallet via the web extension? No problem, you can generate a wallet that will come pre-loaded with 1 AR if you go here: https://tokens.arweave.org/#/wallet.

Let me know if you are still having issues!

my AR balance is still 0

As I just mentioned to Wistar, it's possible you have generated a fresh wallet with 0 AR. No problem though, you can grab a wallet that comes pre-loaded with 1 AR right here: https://tokens.arweave.org/#/wallet

Let me know if you're still having issues and I'll simply send you 1 AR directly instead.

Excellent work, you're approved for level 2! As per the rules, this means you can submit another reply with up to 20 extra unique permaweb archived pages and get rewarded for these!

I have sent you an additional 2 AR so that you can continue archiving. When it's confirmed through the network (which you can check via the blockexplorer), you'll be ready to complete level 2.

Let me know if you have any questions or need a hand with anything.

Great! You can submit another 4 archives for level 1 if would like? That's optional though, you can just submit 6 if you wish.

Thanks for your participation in level 1!

Haha, these are awesome!

Very happy to say you're welcome to progress to level 2! This means you can submit 20 additional, unique archives of web pages and receive level rewards as per the rules in the OP. As I already have your Arweave wallet address I will send you a couple more tokens now so that you can keep archiving for level 2.

Have fun!
