A Twitter app for tipping by way of bitcoin’s experimental lightning network is now easier to use thanks to a new update.

Launched earlier this year, Tippin.me took Twitter’s crypto community by storm by making it possible to tip Twitter users with the experimental micropayment layer lightning. The still-nascent network is being built by a series of startups and developers in a bid to create a new level of scaling for the network.

On Thursday night, the Chrome extension app‘s version 1.0 was released with features that aim to make onboarding new users to the app much easier. These elements include a more comprehensive built-in wallet and better messaging system.

The lightning network is still rather experimental, and even risky to use. At the time of its release, Tippin.me drew support because the app is fairly easy to set up and use as long as a user has a Twitter account.

But even if it’s easier than many other lightning apps, it still left something to be desired, prompting the app’s developer, Sergio Abril, to work on a series of new updates that were bundled into version 1.0.

Notably, users no longer need to set up a third party lightning wallet app to send tips. Perhaps one of the most confusing parts of the app in a prior version was, if you didn’t have a lightning wallet already, you needed to create one to send a tip. But now, that’s not necessary so long as you have a balance on Tippin.me.

The caveat here though is that Tippin.me is a custodial app, meaning that the app itself has control of the funds sitting on the website, rather than the user themselves.

Tippin.me is even giving out a little bit of bitcoin to people who join – enough that they can send a couple of tips, that is.

In addition, users can now use “on-chain” bitcoin instead of just “off-chain” lightning funds to fill up their tipping jar, and can send messages along with their tips.

This is probably the only thing that concerns me. Might've been better if they use a multi-sig wallet where user and Tippin need to sign the TX together (that's possible no?).

I don't think that's possible since the funds are locked up in pre-funded channels. Most people don't have their own LN so they have to do a main chain withdrawal to actually own the coins.

Considering that it in most cases only concerns $5-$10 amounts there isn't much of a risk, especially not when you frequently cash out. I'm using it too and it works extremely well, absolutely love it.

The highest ever fee I had to pay was 10 satoshis due to the various hops, which compared to the main chain fees is still an absolute joke. Tippin has done a lot to make LN popular, respect for that.

I agree that this one big area of concern but knowing that this is a great evolution for bitcoin application that can work for more adoption, I am sure that over time they can do something about. I am seeing a big potential with this project and this can definitely open up more opportunities or avenues for cryptocurrency. Overall, Tippin is an extraordinary step forward we must all appreciate.

Tippin is definitely cool to play around with, but it seems that this is an application with a shelf life due to Twitter eventually integrating Lightning itself.

It would be better if they roll out support for more platforms in order to secure their future, or they just hope that whatever crypto business ends up acquiring them for a big fat stack of coins. I wouldn't mind seeing them roll out support for Reddit, which I spend a lot of time on reading nowadays. Aside from the memes there is a decent bit of productive discussions going on there.

Good to hear that Twitter will soon be integrating Lightning Network with its platform. That can be another good news that we should be excitedly waiting for. Now, if Tippin can offer the same facility in Reddit am sure they can find a big market in there too as discussions on cryptocurrency related matters seem to be ablaze in there. They can also explore other social media sites for possible partnership for this great service.

don't see the point of this

Lightning has been designed to make Bitcoin transactions cheaper and faster, but also more private. If you use Windows or the Chrome browser, you just sold all your privacy. You got a great price too: Google/Microsoft get everything, and you get nothing.

That's just a matter of time. Eventually most of the competent wallet clients will come with LN support by default, but what we can't exercise control over is adoption from social media platforms and other sites.

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey said that he looks forward to implement LN at some point, but this could still take years from where we are today. LN needs to be mass ready for that to happen, and we're not even remotely close right now.
