I don't have enough knowledge about mining, this I know but asking is the part of it Smiley.

Anyway, I wonder which GPU must be chosen to mine various cryptocurrencies as well as Ethereum. While I'm asking this, I know that GPU itself is not enough and it must be supported by a powerful system as well as a good motherboard. But I consider all the other conditions are fine.

So, which GPU must it be?

You can easily pick up any card from AMD, that is RX 470, 480, 570, 580, 570X, 580X, 590, VEGA 56, VEGA 64.
For Nvidia, that is GTX 1060, 1070, 1070ti, 1080 or RTX 2060, 2070, 2080, 2080ti.

I'll recommend to buy it second hand from a reputable seller as there will be plenty of cards in good condition and for a great price.
For the rest of the components, you do not need beefy hardware, i.e. $40 CPU, 4GB RAM, basic mob, 60GB or 120GB SSD, Good PSU with enough wattage (Don't go cheap here) will do just fine.

So you prefer versatility and resale value than shorter ROI.

If you're into GPU, choose Nvidia, but not the not-so-latest releases like the RTX series.
The best possible candidates are GTX 1070(ti) or 1080(ti) for maximum compatibility to both mining software and algos.
You'll likely find it harder to configure for RTX series GPU than GTX ones and the current price can't even justify the low difference in the hashrates of GTX GPUs.

Also, you can find dozens of secondhand GTX1070s and 80's in online/local stores (brand new ones are cheaper now as well).

I own amd rx 500 series cards, they are good for cryptonight and dagger hashimoto algo but not good on any other algo. nvidia cards has more options to mining different algos. So, just grab nvidia gtx 1000series cards or rtx ones with 8gb memory.

Nvidie and it should be 1050ti at least and more is better to be choosen as your GPU that able to mine any cryptocurrency.
Nvidia Rx series and it will be much better if you can take the latest like Radeon VII as your choice consider it was really efficient to be used to mine crypto.
A latest motherboard will make your GPU will be more efficient.

Thanks for the suggestions and nice recommendations. I guess I will go to GTX 1070. But what about other conditions? Motherboard, PSU etc? And what should I dig?

How many GPU do you plan to use? How much electricity will it use?

You should write a good plan when you decided to build a mining rig, so you can picking the good stuff that you need and useless parts to leave off to save even more money.

the processor and RAM plays almost no role, only the graphics card and the motherboard they must work in tandem

If you wanna run up to 10 GPUs or even more. Asus B250 mining board looks a good choice for you, about PSU and it can be determined after you have known about how much GPU that you will run it in your motherboard.

I can go up to 4 GPU for a starter. Is there a limit that you can suggest about the number of GPUs for start the digging?

I want to start with 4 GPUs since my budget allows that many. So, do you think it would be profitable with this number and what must be the motherboard and PSU?

You need at least 1 GPU for mining which can be a bare minimum but for max can be set for 13 which will require good CPU, PSU and past experience with GPU mining.

It will be profitable only when the electricity prices you pay is cheaper. Anyway, 4 is a good number.
If you are keen to keep your hardware for a long time and for other purposes, I'll suggest budget Ryzen CPU below $60 and a MOB with at least 6 PCIe slots. Some even have 7 or 8. That will be better if you can get your hands on them. 4GB RAM, 120GB SSD, a 1000W GOLD PSU will be best for future proofing.

There are a lot of mining rig setup guides out there. Just google them and you'll know very quickly. Better do you own research first and then ask for opinion.

Then just download Nicehash miner or Honeyminer and Bob's your uncle.

You can use  nvidia cards for versatility  with a 1050ti latest motherboard and remember you need more than 1GPU to start but always go with the number you can afford

Thank you, you are the most helpful. And you are right, I need to go and calculate electricity price first. And of course, summer is here and it is another inconvenience.

The most efficient price/performance GPU is 1050ti, isn't it? Should I get higher if I can or just 1050ti is okay?

if you really want GPU then it must be Nvidie Rtx but configuration is difficult so  i would recommend GTX 1070(ti) for  both software and algos.

Thanks for the answer. Do you think that there is going to be a significant difference if I go with 1050 instead of 1070ti? Or between 1050 and RTX series?
