So i was doing a crypto project in 2016. It was a crypto shopping platform. Now we it shut it down due to few reasons which i'll share later. Now i'm wondering if we could rent out users email which is around 2200+. I don't want to sell and handover emails to anyone. We'll just send a email blast.

In our privacy policy page we did mention that third parties may have access to your information.

is this even possible? how much we should charge per email blast?

--
We shut it down because of these reasons.
  • We couldn't scale it. As our tech part was weak.
  • We lost interest in it. As we engaged in other non crypto projects.
  • Crypto regulations and reputation. It's getting worse and worse.

--
We still receive queries from customers to start the service again. If you're some who's interested in running it. I have some more plans/ideas which i'll pass onto you. Hit me a DM for it.

It's 100% possible since the emails are in your hand. If the policy was third parties may have access of the information then you are okay to go. However in normal case a subscriber is interested to the product or service you offered and gave you their details for that reason. They did not gave the details to receive spam in their inbox.

No. And not because you're a crypto service. But because of this thing called General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

If even one of your ex clients comes from Europe, or you used any service based out of Europe, then you've to comply. It's non-negotiable.

Basically what it means is that you have to justify your need to collect (or in your case, retain) the data. You can't anymore since you don't have the business. Then, you need to get the consent (permission) of each user to take that data. You don't have it.

It's a bit more complicated than that, but that's the gist of it.

things like this is the reason facebook landed in the cambridge analytica scandal. You guys try to monetize every bit of user data without any thought about what the individual user might face as a result of your greed.

I would say this is bad practice.
If you are no longer in business and you are closed you should really remove sensitive user information.

Also it would depend on the terms and condition when users signed up if you told them you would pass there info onto other party's if not you will not be able to use the data in the capacity your asking.

You should also be aware of selling the info to scammers you may just end up having your customers flooded with spam or phishing links.

My advice would be to delete the data if it is of no further use to your project.

First of all, I'd like to say that the majority of peoples don't read TOS and privacy policy when they sign up on a site or app.
Even if some peoples read, they really don't understand because it requires a level of reading skills.
Usually, peoples read these pages when they face an issue otherwise not, saying from my own experience as a full-time internet user.

In your privacy policy page, you did mention that third parties may have access to your information but did you mention the purpose of usage by third parties? I guess there is no mention of EMAIL BLAST...

I don't think you had mentioned that you will be sending other promotional offers than the users signed up for, in this case, the products or service you had offered.
Even if you had mentioned this then the majority of peoples didn't read that and logically sending them offers (email blast) may consider as spam imo and spam is not a good thing.

Just start your service again, if your customer is really looking for it. Don't do anything that can cause them to lose their trust for you.

Giving away their email for spammers is certainly a bad idea regardless it's on your ToS or not.

We'll just send a email blast.

In our privacy policy page we did mention that third parties may have access to your information.

I'm not sure if that means they can also receive e-mails from those 3rd party.
You may need to discuss with a lawyer, since with GDPR and maybe other laws, lately you have a good chance to get a fine much more consistent than what you'd get from anybody "renting" those e-mails.

Seems like this a bad idea, also this Bitcointalk police and trust abusers like Vod (who's always licking his boobs & don't even read the full thread) are desperate to leave negative feedbacks.

So i've removed the service post. I know these guys will keep negative feedback on me as it probably keeps them happy or it's their living.

As i am not in crypto scene anymore. So this forum might not be useful for me anymore to promote my crypto projects or join signature campaigns.
So i don't mind the negative ratings.

Peace!

Yes. GDPR is important. As i own few non crypto SaaS businesses too. I'm complying with GDPR on those projects. As this was related to my very old crypto startup which started in 2016 and closed in late 2018.

But it's still seems like a bad idea.

I think that is possible, but that depends on the person who has a large users email list. But if I am not mistaken, I already saw an ad in Fiverr that saying they will send email to their list containing what we want but I forget on the ads. If that is on Fiverr, I think you can get as low as $5-$50. Or you can send by yourself using the email software from your domain hosting, but you need to have a subscribe user in your website.

Altough you mentioned 3rd party may have access user datas in your privacy policy page, people will mark your mails as spam and your service will be useless sooner or later. If you want to use your old data for a new service, it is better to asking people's permission again.

You can explain to people that you closed your previous business and you will continue as a crypto related offers e-mail provider. Maybe you can offer some small giveaways to people who wants to continue on your service.

It wouldn't be fair for those users to receive spam message from a party they never know ever since and the reason why they got their info is because of your shopping site.  Just like you, you'd be surprise to see emails your didn't know you subscribe.  They'd'd be asking for their ultimate privacy when that happen. Even when you mention it in the email yet the advertised product isn't related, those people will be in dismay.

i doubt anyone would be okay opting to a service that will only sell their email address, without giving them anything in return.

anyway, thread is dead, op is not looking for suggestion anymore it seems. so stop bumping it.

Email privacy is a big issue and with dgdr, you could end up in trouble if not we'll managed. Since you already have mails if this win Crypto space, you could restart your project and send mails to them rather that commercialisation of the mail's.

It's 100% possible since the emails are in your hand. If the policy was third parties may have access of the information then you are okay to go. However in normal case a subscriber is interested to the product or service you offered and gave you their details for that reason. They did not gave the details to receive spam in their inbox.
It's sad but usually users don't read privacy policy page and just stick mark to continue registration, yeah, that's their fault but you can't write anything you wish. How can you offer such privacy policy when it's against laws? So from this, you violate laws, you try to agree users on what's prohibited. Second law violate will be if you sell their data, in overall we have two violate from you so I think you have to change privacy policy and forget selling of their data, at least that's unethical man.

I guess all of you are discussing in 2 other ways.

First of all -- of course, it's not good to send anybody a letter that he|she doesn't like to get.
It's not ethic. And sometimes it's a spam and it maybe even a kind of crime.

But if You'll send these letters from another mail -- it is still not ethic, but nobody knows who sender is -- and noone says that you're spammer.
And sometimes it may get some profit (really).

So --- it's bad but it's free and useful. And it's not danger from the law for you if you do it carefully.
