I have been seeing many permanent bans for even many reputed members on the forum due to plagiarism. So to be on the better and safer side I want to know if I say similar lines in two different threads, is it considered as plagiarism?

If for example in a debate topic about theism vs atheism I highlight some points and if I repeat same or similar points in a thread/topic about science vs religion, will it be considered plagiarism? Or is it limited to only copy paste other peoples posts that are considered as plagiarism?

In this case it is more to do with your intentions and mindset.

If you posted some comments in a thread and you find a similar thread discussion, you can post the same point of view in that thread too but in your own words.

But if you just blindly copy pasted what you have said before, then this may be plagiarism and in such case your intention will be to increase your post count without doing any efforts.

Isn't it better to repeat your point of view with some additions as with reading you get new thoughts and more insights about the topic ?

No, it is not palgiarism, but it likely violates rule #12

I agree that adding new words and thoughts or changing the way of the sentence would do the trick, but I guess it should be more based on intentions as you said it. Also adding just few words by repeating the lines you or someone else have previously said is also plagiarism since a part of line copied is also plagiarism Cheesy I was discussing on the issues of plagiarism with a professor and he said that as long as I have the copyrights of my own text, it is not plagiarism. Although that doesn't mean self-plagiarism doesn't exist. I just wanted to be clear on this thing as I haven't seen anyone questioning self-plagiarism yet. So asked just to be on safer side and avoid breaking rules Smiley better to prevent than to find a cure xD Wink

I've done this a couple of times as well, just because there are so many similar threads and sometimes I just want to chime in again.
Now, what I usually do is just mention that I've already said something similar in another thread.

Of course I'll never say exactly the same thing, but sometimes the general gist of it is the same.
Just be honest and add that you've already replied similarly in another thread and perhaps link the thread as well in your reply, since OP of the new thread might find the other thread useful as well.

I don’t think it should be considered plagiarism, but if you are going to put some verbatim parts of a post of yours into another post that you’ve created, you could always quote the part that you intend to include (i.e. quote your OP where the verbatim lines come from, and adjust the quoted text’s content to only include those lines that you wish to replicate).

Or you can quote your post of the first thread in the reply of the second thread and thus the people will read your point of view without even clicking on the link of the first thread.

That's also an option, though usually the thread isn't entirely similar, so it's best to completely tailor your answer.
In cases where it's similar enough it might be the better option to just quote it, yeah.

If it's something that been discussed many times, I usually give list with similar threads.
Like anything involving Bitcoin mining and the impact on the environment gets a list with similar threads from me. Just too many of those threads in Bitcoin Discussion Tongue

You should quote your past post to your future posts if you want to repeat something.
That's the purpose of quoting, quote the information/statements from yourself or other people. They will easily understand it in that way, the quoted statement will serve as your reference in your post.

It's not plagiarism but repeating your posts is prohibited especially in threads, why would you re-post it again?

Note: Repeating your posts is only valid when making a translated version of your own thread to other sections but not all. It's applicable to guides and tutorials only.

It is not plagiarism unless you stole those ideas and presented them as your own. So if you write that your are an atheist in one post, and present reasons why, it is logical that you would claim to be an atheist in a different topic as well.

But, if you read someone else's post (on the forum or outside of it) and decide to base your posts on those points you need to be careful. Changing or spinning a few words still makes it plagiarism. If anything you write is based on another source, add that source to the post for your own safety. It is not a crime to have the same opinion as someone else but don't try to mimic it because it sounds good.

Thanks for the information, I appreciate it, it was only to make the rules a bit clearer since I had some doubts on it so as to prevent any type of rule violations in future Smiley

Believe it or not, but "Self-plagiarism" is actually a thing... refer: http://en.writecheck.com/self-plagiarism

Although it is probably of more relevance in the realms of academia, research and journalism... as others have stated, Rule #12 is probably more relevant on this forum.

Of course it isn't plagiarism. Plagiarism is the copying of another's creation, and pretending it is yours. Copying your own posts can be considered spamming if it is in the same forum, and if it is from a different forum, then it could just be a desire to gain a broader range of replies.

The fit to talk project was created to help non-English speakers to create posts and topics for the English boards in Bitcoin Talk. A post can be the creation of two or three members based on the origin post. Copying the resultant creation onto a BT board is not plagiarism, as this is the whole purpose of the Fit to Talk English project entries. I insist on the use of BT account names to avoid any accusations of plagiarism. Of course posting an unattributed entry, or the work of another member can be considered to be plagiarism.

To avoid any misunderstandings, it is always best to be open, and to declare the source if a post is not wholly original.
