Afternoon all,

Apologies if this is a duplicate, I was looking around for a Wimbledon thread but only found the general Tennis discussion ones so far.

Wimbledon is just around the corner, and we've just published an article from Tennis expert and trader Dan Weston (tennisratings.co.uk) with his breakdown of the data surrounding court conditions, estimated odds, value bets, etc.

You can check out the blog here.

The most interesting part for me was the look at current ATP top 10 players; and which exhibited the best grass court records across the last 24 months:

(Based on this I put a cheeky little bet on Cillic as an outsider @ 18.0  Wink)

Who do you think will take the Championship Trophy and Venus Rosewater Dish this year?

Jesus, Federer is still going? Surely he's gotta be close to 40 now?

Looking through the top 10, seems like practically all of the top Tennis players are in their thirties now, strange compared to other sports like boxing, sprint and soccer where players peak in the late 20s.

That being said, Djokovic is a beast, my money is on him.

~snip~

That being said, Djokovic is a beast, my money is on him.
I may consider placing an outright for Djokovic to win the title and also to reach the final. For cricket world cup, I have Australia to win the world cup and also to reach the final and still I am going well :-P

I had another outright bet in IPL too. CSK to reach final and I had it but unfortunately I lost CSK to in IPL trophy.

So, considering the record I hope I will do well for Djokovic to win the title and Djokovic to reach the final.

Grass has always been favorable to the big guys with big serves given how fast the surface is. Cilic and Raonic will be a problem to potential winners like Roger, Rafa, and Novak.

Has Andy Murray retired already? He used to be a favorite in this tournament.

I am rooting for Djokovic here. Among the top three, he has the most complete tools to win. Younger than Federer and more skillful than Nadal.

Good stats.. Interesting to see some low ranked and new players displaying a good stats like F. Lopez. Kinda makes me rooting for underdogs against good players who are struggling with injuries.

I will be rooting for Nadal to win. That guy is coming back from injuries so I really hope he win this time.

Thanks for opening this topic and the stats.
I am a fan of Federer, so my money is on him. He may be 37, but heis still playing on a very high level (he won another tournament last week). Grass is his favorite underground and I am confident that in a good day he can win from Djokovic and Nadal!

BIG WINNER!

Federer is 37 years young to be exact.

It's because there's no young prospect to come out and test those old veterans that's why Nadal, Federer and Djoker is still in the top 10. If Murray didn't get injured last year, I'm sure he is still in the hunt for the top stop in tennis.

As far as Wimbledon, I still go with Roger here, he has the momentum going after winning the Halle Tournament last week.

Nadal expertise in clay, so I don't think that his chances are very high in Wimbledon. Yes he is coming back from injuries as well, however he just won his record 12th French Open title, solidifying his case as the greatest clay court player in the open era.

Very interesting stats. Grass is very specific surface, very different from clay or hard surface. No surprise that Djokovic is favorite there.
I will be rooting for Nadal to win. That guy is coming back from injuries so I really hope he win this time.
I will also root for Nadal, but he isn't doing very well on grass, he is clay master.
Has Andy Murray retired already? He used to be a favorite in this tournament.
He announced about retirement after Australian Open because he struggled with injuries. But he returned after recovery few weeks ago and played in few doubles tournaments. Probably his ATP rating currently is too low to qualify to the Wimbledon.

Wimbledon is coming and it’s good to see the excitement here, it’s worth mentioning that cloudbet has given Nadal second rank, and in official rankings he’s ranked third which is bad. Djokovic is everyone’s favourite and rightly so because he’s a beast when he plays on grass and I wouldn’t be surprised if he won again. Then I’m expecting Federer and Nadal to reach the semifinal’s atleast, but they won’t be winning the title.

Roger Federer is coming off from a win in Halle, so I think he will be the a good favourite to win Wimbledon again. Novak Djokovic losses this far is from the clay surface, final lost to Nadal at Italian Open and semi-finals to Dominic Thiem in French Open.

So if I'm going to bet, I will go with Roger today, while my long shot would be Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Has Andy Murray retired already? He used to be a favorite in this tournament.

No, Andy Murray is still playing but not in singles yet. He just came from a brutal injury (hip surgery) and he is trying to get back. He the doubles in Queen's Club together with Feliciano Lopez, who eventually won the singles also. That's why his name is on the list as well.

So no one is tipping Cilic or Raonic? I'd love to see one of them really pushing the top 3 seeds in the latter stages, and either one *should* be able to beat Nadal on grass on a good day.

while my long shot would be Stefanos Tsitsipas.

@Kemarit - That's an interesting pick to be fair. He beat Federer this year in Italy and reached the final in Madrid after beating Nadal, but both of those are on Clay and I'm not sure he'll be able to compete with all the serve-and-volley play at Wimbledon.

@Juggy777 - Great spot, I'll pass that on to our tennis tipster!

On another note there's a bunch of changes to Wimbledon this year that could effect the betting odds, the biggest of which is probably the covered court one, and the rule changes to avoid so-called 'marathon matches'.

The covered court can really open things up in terms of the odds, as the conditions (or lack thereof) can completely change the run of the game. It's actually a real shame Murray isn't competing as his record for indoor matches is pretty impressive.

The changes to the rules to introduce a tie-break in the final set is also a game-changer, it should actually give 'less skilled' players more of a chance (with a little help from lady luck)

We have a great blog about the role of luck in betting that delves into tennis majors specifically. It's proven that the influence of skill on the outcome of a match match will increase as the number of repetitions increase, so on the other side of that coin, the role of luck will increase with the number of points being lowered.

My money is on federed hard to bet against federer on grass, and the level of play even as he gets older is still top 3 without a doubt and that is realy hard to believe Cheesy

I think Rafael Nadal is the strongest in a dust court but I don't think is one strong player in grass court although I am not a regular follower of tennis and maybe I have confused things.Federer is a great player and both with Nadal have been number ones in the tennis rankings.I think that Djokovic is the actual number one so it will be a great tournament to watch for the tennis fans.

Wimbledon is ultimately going to be a Djokovic vs Federer tournament as Andy Murray is not playing the singles. They have been the kings of Grass court. And Old Federer is still healthy and fit to compete with Djokovic. Though I'd love to see any new hero coming up to take the trophy.

Interesting draw for the men's singles - Federer and Nadal were both drawn in the same half, meaning that they will not meet in the final and Djokovic will have a slightly easier route through (his odds have dropped slightly as a response to 2.25).

Nadal has arguably the more difficult draw, with a second-round clash against Nick Kyrgios (assuming he breezes past Sugita in the first round). There's also a potential fourth round clash against Cilic to look forward to.

I'm now leaning towards a Djokovic v Federer final, but I'll still be keeping my fingers crossed for Cilic  Wink

Novak Djokovic is THE KING and it will be a big surprise if he doesn't win this year's Wimbledon.
I used to be big tennis fan years ago,but the domination of only three big players, kinda made this game boring for me.I really want some of the younger players like Dimitrov and Andersen to make the difference  and achieve success in this tournament.

Djokovic has to be the favourite but he’s getting older, aw is Nadal & Fed. Maybe it’s time for a younger, less favoured player to break through and take the Championship this year?
