Its main purpose at the moment is to make an alternative to payment especially if you don't have cash on hand, but for now, what's happening is they are not spending it as crypto has the potential for the price to rise so they are treating it as investment instead of spending.

Crytpocurrency will definitely be a future alternate payment option. But I doubt decentralized currencies would be given that much freedom. Every country and bank are expected to come up with their domestic cryptocurrency which will be centralized and central bank will have control over that. That would be accepted as a legal tender. Decentralized currencies may exist with them but they will be heavily regulated or banned in some countries.

There is a country who legalize Bitcoin already and it is Japan and is adapted massively as another mode of payment and you can even pay an airline ticket there through Bitcoin. Also, in our country you can pay for your electric bills, water, loans and other bills with either your fiat, Bitcoin or any other cryptocurrencies that are available.
