What is off topic?

The answer to this would seem obviois, and I thought I knew.  But I got a post deleted. So this is my question.

Why is asking what music was used in a video for advertising a project off topic?

I posted on a mining project. My post was deleted because it was off topic. There was a video of their mining project. The video showed the construction of their project and was accompanied by a lively song.  I asked what was the music they used in their add, and said congratulations.
I am a musician and I always ask about the music when ever it is present. So why is this off topic?

I have little to no knowledge to add anything else, so is this spam to say congratulations, and / thank you for the information?  And asking about the music is second nature to me. Why wouldn't it be relevant, to ask about the music, since it was used in their promotion of their product?

Here you go:
1. No zero or low value, pointless or uninteresting posts or threads. [1][e]

1. Such posts as "SELL SELL SELL", "I agree", "+1", "Support", "Watching", "Interesting", "LOL", "SCAM", "LEGIT", "FAKE", other one word posts, posts consisting mostly of swearing, quote pyramids, useless introduction threads, threads about a topic already recently discussed in several other threads.
I think your post deleted because it is low value, pointless, etc. not off-topic. Maybe someone reported your post to staff, then it get deleted later.
Maybe you did not have bad intention with your post, but that sort of post pattern is the most favorite one for spammers, whom use it to get post counts.

The Mining section is pretty strict on the posts from what I've heard.
If you still want to know the answer to your question I would PM the thread-owner.

The issue with spam is that most people will say thanks or some vague statement of approval/agreement and add something to pad the post. Perhaps a moderator thought you did the same.

Thanks to you both. So I understand a pattern is just saying congrats or thank you is low quality. But I have seen many people saying congrats or thank-you.

I have spent most of my time in politics and society and those posts tend to be rather long. If anybody checked my posts they could see it wasn't a pattern.

I started a signature campaign I have to go outside. It's all new and all interesting. And also I had lost some money in a mining venture so I was interested in seeing what they had. I did not post all day as now it seems too risky I certainly couldn't contribute anything technical but it doesn't seem fair to delete the one time I said congrats and what is the music you're using.

Thanks I will P.M. them.

Please read the message fully that you are sent with a deleted post. The PM states that:

Quote
Posts are most frequently deleted because they are off-topic, though they can also be deleted for other reasons. In the future, please avoid posting things that need to be deleted.

One of the most common reasons for the post being removed may be off topic but there's a multitude of other reasons that they are removed like spam, low quality, necrobumps etc and a full list of possible reasons can be found in the forum rules: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=703657.msg7955645#msg7955645

I started a signature campaign I have to go outside. It's all new and all interesting. And also I had lost some money in a mining venture so I was interested in seeing what they had. You don't have to 'go outside'. This is the whole issue with people posting under signature campaigns as they feel the need to post in boards where they have little to no knowledge of the given subject and forcing yourself to do so is just a recipe for disaster and hence why you likely had your post removed.

I have another point to contribute to @Krsps:
- The more posts deleted, and the more regularly your post deleted, the higher chances that your account might be temporary banned.
It is the reason that PM sent to users with deleted posts contains this part:
Quote
In the future, please avoid posting things that need to be deleted.
You can read more here: Signature Campaign Guidelines (read this before starting or joining a campaign)
Quote
Campaign Participants:

Staff do not want to hand out bans for unconstructive posts but if we feel that you as a user are continually making very poor or unsubstantial posts due to your paid signature the following bans will be issued:

First offence: 7 days
Second offence: 14 days
Third offence: 30 days
Fourth: Permanent ban

Your first ban is your first warning. If you have to be banned for a fourth time it is permanent and you will no longer be allowed to participate on the forum under any accounts. Note: If you are banned on one account then you are not allowed to post under any accounts you own for the duration of your ban. The only exception to this rule is Meta where you can discuss the circumstances of your ban if you wish to do so but anywhere outside of that sub will be considered ban evasion and will get your ban doubled, but it is generally best to just patiently wait out your ban and improve your posts on return and hopefully no further bans will be needed.
It means that your first post deleted is very early warning, that might lead to first ban (7 days). The first offence is a stronger warning for you and your post quality.

You must ask yourself if asking for the background music of their posted video will be on topic about anything on mining or even has any relation to what they are currently talking about in the thread. Because your post even if it is asking about what music their video is, it doesn't let you be part of the current conversation, you are like throwing a random question from a rather serious topic. You must relate yourself with the topic especially on the questions he  left lying around for other members to answer for you to be on topic.

You have a signature campagin and the post is not worth much.

Asking op via pm would be more appropriate then what you did.

Not to be rude, but why are you replying to threads in the mining boards when you say yourself you have nothing to add there?
Are you even interested in mining at all? If the answer is no, stick to other boards where you do have something to add.

Never let the fact that you're in a signature campaign determine how much and where you post.
Always try to be constructive and add value to your replies.

On this forum, it's best not to mirror other people, just find out by yourself how to behave. It's good that you asked here, because now you know what not to do in the future. That's what the Meta board is all about IMO.

Oh and just download Shazam to find songs Wink

The mining board is very strict when it comes to what is allowed and what not. Even higher ranked users have asked for reasons why their posts got deleted and in some cases they were not even off topic, at least not based on the opinion of the community.
But in your case, if all you did was ask about the music that was played and didnt contribute to the thread or flow of discussion in any other way it was probably seen as off topic and pointless post in the eyes of the mod.

Regarding the music. There is a phone app called Shazam. You should check it out. It can show you the name of any song you hear via your phone.

The Mining section is pretty strict on the posts from what I've heard.
They are indeed.  I think I posted what I thought was a legitimate comment about some USB stick miner and I'm pretty sure it got deleted.  That section doesn't tolerate low-quality posts, and their threshold for them is pretty low.  I've become interested in Philipma1957's solar mining stuff but I've refrained from actually commenting there for fear of having my posts deleted--so I'm just reading for now.

OP, other sections you could probably get away with the posts you made that got nuked.  But regardless, don't just post silly things that don't add much to a thread, because chances are someone will report it.

Yes, I understand what you are saying. However other posts did mentioned the music, also, so it wasn't completely random. The video was a celebration of the building and opening of the mining set up. And there were also congrats.

Can you link the post?

If other posts mentioned the music... (and were also asking for it) then your post may have been repetitious. Any remarks that are repeated do not contribute to the conversation/discussion and are inherently insubstantial.

The other thing is: other members may not have had a signature (or rather a campaigned signature). Mods are usually stricter on users that are in campaigns since they have an incentive to create replies on a regular basis whether they're on or off-topic.

Not to be rude? You could have fooled me. Yes, I am interested in mining. I had invested in mining  before. As I said in my first post here.
And excuse me for being interested in something.

Please don't feel bad  frodocooper works really hard at running a very tight ship in the mining section.

I get 2 to 3 deletes and/or edits each week Grin

To be fair I post a lot about 10-15 posts a day. Maybe more now that I am retired.

I don't have any payments for my signature. I have not been in a campaign since 2015 maybe 2014.  I used the money from the signature to fund the difficulty giveaway I used to do.

But I go back to 6 dollar btc.  So I really worked at promo for mining more for coin growth then my personal wealth. So now sometimes a new guy  wants to be pleasant and gets hammered.

I think it is the result of all the growth in BTC that has happened it is more serious money in mining.  In 2012 at times I mined 25gh in gpus about 10000 watts  that was in my garage

and it was 25gh /21th  or

25/21000 = 0.00119 or the network 1 made 1 btc a day and lost about 20 cents a day dining it.

if I had 0.00119 of the network.   it would be 64,000,000th x 0.00119 =76,190th  or

1525 s17s or 6000 s9's That would be 7800 kwatts an hour vs the 10 kwatts I used to burn.  I would need 780 garages full of gear vs 1.

so it is much more of a business and very serious on mining forum.

I have about 700th soon to be 800th and it is a job not fun like it used to be.  So miners have become more serious.
my power bill is more then 5000 a month.  So It is hard to stay as light hearted as I used to be. Kind of sucks in a way.

Apparently not!  The above quote is another deleted post. I got 3 more posts deleted on this thread for answering and thanking you all!

I would put all 3 but not sure how to do that. But I will upon reuest.

It's not just the mining board that is strict. I am at a loss. Is it for I saying thank you?

The reporting of off topic posts seems a bit too zealous, and at this point, is none productive, IMO.
Are people to live in fear of saying thank you, even when replying on your own thread?
Something has gone haywire, just when everything was starting to make sense. I  had spent all studying all the links that were provided and also exploring other boards. Then thanking you guys... But  this morning to 3 more messages of deleted posts.

I humbly suggest there is something wrong with this system.  Who is checking the checkers? I don't mean to be disrespectful, but Is the reward too great for reporting  the so-calleded off topic post?
Thank you.   (Yes, I will dare to say it)

Things are complicated on bitcointalk.

If you think of the forum as a tool  say a hammer  you can do nice things with a hammer.

Build a house  fix  a loose board in a deck.

You can do bad things with a hammer  smash  your thumb if you swing and miss the nail or worse someone swings a hammer at a person and injures him.

The forum is a tool.  You have a paying signature  some think it is bad   to do that and what only really nicely written well thought out info   when you are getting a payment for a post.  Some would say you are swinging your hammer improperly  with the posts you made.  But in this thread  your posts are pretty good and you made up for the deletions  of the other posts.

So "don't worry be happy"  title of a pop song Bobby mcfaren I think

I added quotes and gave credit for the line : don't worry be happy  since we have had the plagiarism rules be enforced more strictly.

Thanks to you all for educating me. I don't want to repeat myself, but I am grateful that you took the time to respond and give me important information.

And now I will lock this thread as I have just learned, is the correct way to conclude. Cheers!
