Not all, but most of them are categories. OP didn't claim they were crypto currencies.

Just like there are different categories/industries you can choose to invest in when it comes to stocks (e.g. banking, automobile, telecom, pharmaceuticals, etc), you have that within the crypto market too (e.g. privacy coins, stable coins, Dapp platforms, Exchange tokens, etc).

Of course, there are coins that can rock multiple of these characteristics, but from an investor's perspective coins/projects are different categories/industries.

Coming back to OP's main question, I'm highly interested in seeing what will be built on top of Lightning. Tether plans to issue USDT on Lightning so it will be interesting to see how that will work out.

Who said that there are exactly 14 categories and they consist of the technologies/trends that you've mentioned? There are much more fields in cryptocurrency sphere as people are experimenting with different applications, or in some cases just write technobabble for their whitepapers.

Lightning Network and privacy coins are the most promising fields in crypto, because they have solid foundation, they already work quite well and just need some improvements. On the opposite, fields like IOT are mostly just vaporware that no one really needs. Dapps don't have any real users, aside from some decentralized gambling games. IFO and IEO are just new ways to scam altcoin suckers.

Cryptocurrencies innovation and all , we do see new cryptocurrencies being generated every single day but when it comes to innovation; nothing.
We actually have nothing in the cryptocurrency sector.

We see new cryptocurrencies being added every day but why do people stay in Bitcoins ? That's just because it's nothing new .

With the increase in the number of new coins, new applications of cryptocurrencies, the categories of cryptocurrencies will change, new ones will be added and old ones will disappear, this is quite a normal process and the sphere will evolve. By the way, I do not exclude that the categories of cryptocurrencies can be called more, because some coins are hybrid and fall into several categories at once.

I think we will further see a whole new niche/categories in the near future as I think cryptocurrency is just only at its infancy even after a decade after Bitcoin was invented and new use-cases naturally will emerge as part of its evolution and as blockchain innovations progresses overtime.

Cryptocurrencies just fall under a category called money, because it can be applied to anywhere we need money to be used.

But this made lot of opportunities for the people to create what they are interested and also make more money from it.

Some popular anonimity coins like Monero, Zcash, and Dash are more anonymous compared to Bitcoin thus making a shift from criminals doing illicit activities from the coins I have mentioned, even the authorities have said that they know that these cryptocurrencies now are being used to criminal activities.

We still have many more years into cryptocurrency development and lots of innovations will still arise, prior to when all these categories became visible, I am sure we may not have more than 1 or 2 categories, but as time goes by, and the crypto spaces expanded, and we started having different people with different innovations with the promises of using the blockchain technology to solve some challenges we may never have thought of.

We have deep thinkers in the world, and some of them are yet to know about cryptocurrency or blockchain, as they get exposed to them, they will gradually come up with their own innovations too, and one of the greatest innovations I really admire is the lightning network. I also love that of privacy coin, and mostly payment.

it is best if you clarify that these are the categories that you have come up with not something that is going on. many of these categories don't make any sense, for example what does "social" mean? is it the usage of blockchain technology in social media platforms which has never happened yet? or for example "Market Prediction" is not even a valid category! it is just what a group of people in this industry are focusing on.

as for what is going to grow more in the future, i have to say as the name suggest (crypto-"currency") those that focus on the currency aspect, starting from bitcoin, are going to be the successful ones. other areas are still not explored at all or just looked at as a possibility.

All that is not even necessary, there is enough space for everyone to build their own project, and I don’t even think cryptocurrency has anything like categories… if it does, then I don’t know about that, but what I do know is that anyone can build their own project no matter what it is, as long as you know that the project is good and is going to benefit people, then you can throw it out and get lots of investors to invest and grow the business as well. There’s really no need for all these you have mentioned here.

When the need to open a business becomes more, it is also the time when many new ideas are established. I really like the way that startups struggle to compete for their market share in the crypto market.
But I see that many projects are now heading to Dapp Platform, Payment and exchange.
It is also seen as one of the industries that bring high profit value to investors and potential for startups.

I doubt this will cause an increase in price unless the projects actually do what they were created for. For some strange reason, Decentralized exchange is one of the few categories that is doing quite well. Guess developers don't have the will to make other categories work.
