That's a dirty word. I've read that they've had to fork the testnet a couple of times because people were trying to monetise it.

The easiest place will be a testnet faucet.

Lots are empty but those claim to have some. When you're done it's considered good form to return it to the faucet.

If you ever need a big amount of testnet coins, you can try asking this user. I've seen him giving 5 tBTC at once and even offering to get 50-150 BTC to another user. Never pay for them tho.

actually it is the only thing that is different between bitcoin testnet and bitcoin mainnet. the difference is in difficulty, it is set in a way that it can drop to 1 if there hasn't been any blocks found for a while. this is done to help keep the testnet chain alive. but then it has been manipulated a lot which means there are times that we don't see any new blocks for a long time and then as the difficulty drops we see hundreds found within a short time.
