Taiwan belongs to Taiwan. The Nationalists was the Chinese government before Japan came in and ruined stuff in WWII. They were even THE "China" on the UN before they got backstabbed and kicked out and replaced with the mainland.
They were the ones who suffered heavy casualties by going against the Japanese defending the country while the Communists hid in their jungle lairs. That's why the Communists managed to beat them after the war, they were not able to fully recover.
They relocated to Formosa and became an industrialized democratic country while the Communists in the mainland were eating grass and sparrows. It would have stayed that way if it wasn't for that Kissinger dude (the same person who had Cambodia and Laos bombed without informing Congress).
The Communists are only claiming Taiwan by principle of force, they didn't give a shit about it before (same with those islands it's disputing with neighbors). Taiwan has every right to defend itself and it's only got a few countries willing to sell it arms.
