I have not had any of the new gears yet , and have no idea about the level of noise that each make, planning to sell some old S9s to buy a few more efficient gears.

This particular place is a residential area, with the split room set-up I am able to control most of the noise coming from the S9s ( except for when they first power on and fans are at 100%) but then that only lasts for a minute or less so  nobody really complained, so i am a little bit concerned about the new gears, specially the non-bitmain gears because I have no experience with those .

So I am considering the following options:

-Whatsminer  M21S-56th
-Innosilcon T2T 30th
-Innosilcon T3-43T
-Bitmain S17
-Bitmain T17

Among the 5 options , what would be close to S9 in terms of noise? (assuming they run at the same condition)

I will be doing this upgrade around September-October so not really in a rush, but I want to plan ahead, the most important factor for this upgrade would be the level of noise.

I only have about 12kw of power for this place (does not include other components like fans and stuff, those have separate allocation) , so making the most of it is also important, I would appreciate the inputs from you guys, suggesting another gear that I haven't listed would also be great.

Thanks a lot.

Quietest would probably be the A1041 in LPM.

yeah of all that  i tried A1041 makes the least noise

also the s17 pro 53th in lowest setting was good.

both are better then the s9 for noise

I have an s9i that runs at 40% RPM with Bitmain Nov 7 2018 FW but an older s9 that's rarely under 80% on braiins.

If you're trying to reduce noise, the thing to remember is that these are built to be loud, period. There's really no such thing as quiet unless you go small form factor like an R606 or newpac.

The newer whatsminer m21

 https://pangolinminer.com/product/whatsminer-m21-with-psu-shipout-during-august-1020/

has not been made available to me

it specs 28th and 1680 watts   if it has a low power setting  it could be best.   I will get one down the road, but not now.

at op Can you get the m21?

I would wait, maybe someone who has the m21 will chime in but I wouldn't expect more info on those for another month or more.

Also I'm under the assumption mikey is not really wanting to experiment. Maybe I'm wrong.

at op Can you get the m21?

if you are talking about M21S-56th , yes I can but i read somewhere that they are pretty noisy , not sure tho.

... the thing to remember is that these are built to be loud, period. There's really no such thing as quiet unless you go small form factor like an R606 or newpac.

Thank you for suggesting the  A1041 , I am looking into these gears.

for the quoted part, if you read the op you would know that I am already controlling the noise of S9s , 10 of them to be accurate , all run at 50% static fan speed , I am not expecting a silent miner that I can put under my pillow and sleep peacefully  Grin, I don't really care about the noise for all my other set-ups but for this particular one sound level does matter a lot.

But i agree to your point, the word quiet does not fit here, maybe less-noise would be a better word to use in this case ,  to sum up I want to fully utilize the 12kw I have with noise level that doesn't exceed the noise of 10 S9s with fans running at 50%.

So if go with the AvalonMiner 1041 and run them on standard mode I can get

12000w / 1736w = 7 gears.

total hash rate = 217th

if I run them at Turbo mode

12000w/ 2361w =  5 gears

total hash rate = 184.5

The second option with be cheaper, but not sure if the noise will be acceptable when running Turbo Mode.

My testing on the m21s  shows it to be really quiet on low power setting.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5169309.msg51964462#msg51964462

it can work for you on low speed.

fan rpm under 1800

Can you make a table with db levels of each of your tested units? Would make for a much easier comparison. M21S is  67db? That's two 140mm fans?

M21s
M20s    both are nasty pitch  at full speed and over 70db

the m21s at low speed is under 55db better then the average s9 pitch is pleasant to the ear. wife and I both do not hear it when sleeping

S17 pro 53th  stock speed in the 60-65db range and tiny psu fan is whiney
S17 pro 53th  low speed in the 50-55db range and tiny psu fan is not to whiney almost okay when sleeping in bedroom above it
T17  one speed in the 60-65db range  and tiny psu fan  is whiney

Avalon a1041  high speed over 60db pretty loud.
Avalon a1041  low speed  under 55db  not too loud  --------- when I am sleeping in my bedroom above the garage can hear it a bit

so m21s on low is the winner
avalon a1041 on low is runner up
bitmain s17pro 53th on low is very close to the avalon

t17 1 speed = loser
inno t3t t39  loud on all speeds as fans run at 100%

[...]

Well this measuring method is... interesting. Considering you do have db meter, why don't you take readings from (a fixed position in) said bedroom for each of the units? Given the larger fan it is possible the noise is lower pitched in those units. You could get a reading next to the miner, and the "bedroom" reading. Do that at night at sleep time of course...

And then the noise levels table would start looking interesting.

I guess it would be fair to have only the singled unit being tested and not the whole mess of things you keep running in that garage. And also without putting the unit inside the silencing box. Its just to get numbers as accurate as possible, obviously you found already the M21S is the quietest.

M20s has full speed only psu has one larger fan.
M21s has two speeds psu has one larger fan

S17  I have a pro has three speeds psu has two tiny fans
T17 has one speed psu has two tiny fans

A1041 has two speeds psu has one larger fan

The bitmain smaller fans are more of a Mo ski toe the  bug whine. They are annoying but not unbearable.

The m20 m21s a1041 all have the large psu with one large fan.

At full speed pushing those fans none of them are pleasant.  All are nasty.

On low speed the m21s was a tad lower then the a1041

It was hard to hear the a1041 when sleeping in a bedroom above the unit.
Both my wife and I did not hear the m21s  on low speed.

But if i was to go for quiet it would be the a1041 since it does drop from 37 to 31 th and the m21s drops

From 56th to 29th. So the a1041 is better for sound.

The dbs are less important as the sound from a full speed m20s or a m21s  psu fan is the worse sound I have heard from any miner.
