Hi, I tried to take a shortcut for our donation system, and of course it was a mistake. KYC reared its ugly head with coinpayments .net and then their impersonal automation and "support" finished the job. Seems best to run a full node. My own fault really for believing the marketing.  Is anyone willing to help set one up? I will have to use a raspberry Pi 4 due to low funds, but it seems they are adequate from looking around online.

I'll need to tie it in to our payments system, but there seems to be adequate docs for that. The hard part will be setting it up in the first place. More than jsut setting it up, I need to learn so I am not continually pestering people to help.

More about what it will be used for is in the link in my sig. Or if not, where would be the best place to post?
Thanks
Andy

To me setting up a full node is super simple. It involves finding the package that brings bitcoind and install that. Depending on distro there are some subtle details in having the service start on its own, and you might need to change some config options. For something like a raspi i'd plug an external hard drive to store the blockchain, and this needs to go into /etc/fstab. Then a little symlink or config change (for the blockchain to be written to the actual hd).

And then wait for the thing to sync. Too bad my internet has become garbage (like the rest of the services in this country) otherwise i would keep running mine out of fun.

You don't strictly need a raspi, any old pc with 500g HD or so works the same. Any minimal cli only linux distro is enough.

BTCpay is an excellent solution if you manage to run that, but i think you should keep a full node running somewhere anyway.

What you need is payment processor where you have full control over whole system such as BTCPay

Since you use Raspberry Pi, check this guide https://docs.btcpayserver.org/deployment/raspberrypideployment. Take note that the guide isn't tested on RPi 4.
Thanks ETF I will check those out.

Does your donation system explicitly require the tracking of the various donations?

If not, you can just set up a static address for donors to donate and it would be much simpler. Else, you can consider trying out Electrum. While Electrum is not a full node, you do get the liberty of having full control of your funds and they do have a RPC interface for you to use and track the donations. You wouldn't have to synchronise the block chain at all and there is no need for an excessive amount of storage space either.

Thanks ETF I will check those out.
(Additional to ETFbitcoin.)

I have experienced with BTCpayserver with their plugin for woocommerce I'm currently using their 3rd party, not a full node it is a 3rd party hosted from their site it seems fine to me.

Since you are using WordPress website I suggest you follow this guide from here https://docs.btcpayserver.org/integrations/woocommerce that includes the video tutorial to make a payment gateway for woocommerce self-hosted or you can also try the 3rd party hosted.

I have some bookmarked useful link to make a full node with raspberry pi both Bitcoin and lightning network.

Here are the guides and links below that will help you to start making your own full node with raspberry pi.

~snip
I'm just wondering what 3rd party you are using? I have a website and I would like to be sent directly to my wallet. I have seen this list on their site.

  • btcpayjungle.com
  • btcpaynow.net
  • btcpayprovider.com
  • exitpay.org
  • lightbo.lt
  • lightninginabox.co
  • merklesig.com
  • nodl.it

I'm not so worried about the Security Concerns because I'm not sure if it's going to receive a lot of transaction or something. It is based on trust so I would like to know yours, so it's kind of a review and referral in a way.

Does your donation system explicitly require the tracking of the various donations?
Yes, unfortunately it needs to keep track of deposits from each user, and then they transfer to their chosen recipient with no fee whenever they like. So it generates addresses for them for each coin. The idea is that they can direct faucet/PTC site earnings direct there, then use them to support projects. But they can cheat and just send in coins from anywhere!

But having to run a node for each coin means I wont be able to support so many coins now.

The fourth Pi has been released some time ago, so you should be able to buy it. The 4 GB RAM version seems to be sold out everywhere, but you should be able to get the 2 GB one easily. Here you can check for your local, official resellers.

I haven't tried them yet. I'm currently using their demo server the main net one which is this https://mainnet.demo.btcpayserver.org, for now, it's fine but I am planning to make my own full node too with raspi because I think it is much safer than using any 3rd party.

If you are planning to use btcpay for long term I suggest you choose the self-hosted and install your own full node.

Yes I had not read it properly, I thought you had to buy it from blitz, but now I see I can download the image and DIY. Thanks.
