Hello,

I am newbie, and I try to read documents on bitcoin, how to keep my fund safe with seeds, and backup files.
However, there is one point I don't really understand.

If I have a bitcoin wallet, I save its seeds, then encrypt that wallet. Later on, I do its backup (after encrypt that wallet).
So, what will happen if some months later, I lose the wallet backup, then I will have to start from scratch with seeds only.
Will I be able to fully recover my funds?

If yes, I have one more question.
Passwords of wallet is only needed if I recover my funds from wallet's backup files, right?

Thank you for help me with this nooby question.

1. You can choose between two backups:
  • Recovery seed backup. This is the 12-24 words you write down.
  • A keystore file. You can save it on your computer, and secure it with a good password.

2. You can use either one of the two backups to restore your wallet.

Which wallet are you using?

seed is everything you need to recover your funds on most wallets.

Just note it down on a piece of paper and recover itusign the same wallet software or another one if they both use bip39 seed..

If you are using some other wallet that generate a wallet file and you encrypt that file, you need to know the password to decrypt it.

I strongly suggest that you use Electrum.org wallet or some other wallet that supports bip39 seed, because it is much simpler to back up and recover it than dealing with files and encryption (in my opinion)

first thing you need to know is that your wallet doesn't hold any funds. all you own is "keys" that you use to unlock your funds that are already on the blockchain stored by and shared among thousands of nodes.

so all you need to save or backup is those keys. and as long as you have them, you can recover your wallet and spend your coins.

with HD wallets you have 1 seed which you use to generate all your keys. the process of generating those keys is known so all you need to do is back up that seed. so whenever you wanted to recover all your keys you just give your wallet that seed and it generates all of them based on it for you.
one way to back it up is using a mnemonic (a set of words) and all you need to do is store these words as they are shown to you.

* you can also backup the wallet file but it is not needed since the mnomonic does everything already.

There is a FOMO brewing...

Thank you, I use Electrum.
From all your post and others' so far, it seems that I can recover my wallet with seeds on any other devices.
Backup files and password of backup files are only helpful if I lost seeds, but still have access to backup files & passwords of those files.
Do I understand it correctly.

Yes. To recover your wallet if anything happens you will need EITHER:

a) your backup seed.
b) your wallet file (and if encrypted, your password).
c) another device with the wallet so you can get any of the above and restore in your other devices.

Remember: ALWAYS write down your seed in a safe place. That’s what matters the most.

Yes as long as you have your wallet seeds you can restore your wallet with all your funds intact and no you don't need to remember your previous password to restore your wallet the password you used before was to prevent people from sending funds from your wallet and has nothing to do with your wallet seeds.
