Blockchain-based anti-counterfiet drugs made by Students from Cebu Phillippines

Since I am in the Pharmaceutical field, too. I am very much happy and proud that these students from University of San Carlos (Cebu City, Phillippines) made a blockchain technology leveraging healthcare field in Pharmaceutical supply. Their team called, "MediSure" compete in  2019 International Blockchain Olympiad (IBCOL) at the Hong kong Science and Technology Parks, InnoCentre and won 2nd place with silver medal.

The main goal is to integrate blockchain-based technology in the Pharmaceutical system to bust and prevent all the counterfiet drugs. It was amazing that these young minds think of a good way on how to stop the spreading of fake medicines. There are so many counterfeit drugs that are still proliferating and widespread in different pharmacy outlets.

I do hope this is the solution to finally put an end to this kind of illegal actions. As we all know these counterfeit drugs may cause danger because it may contain different or wrong active ingredient that may have no effect or worst be the cause of death of an individual.

It was funny in a way because I know an ICO project which basically aims to do the same thing. It would be great if these students get enough support and run a pilot project in one or two hospitals.

Good luck for those kids, hopefully, they'll pursue a career in a blockchain business later on and create many contributions.

I'm on my way to becoming a Pathologist myself, and seeing that there are efforts to at least lessen the issue for counterfeit drugs--which is very widespread and evident within the Philippines btw--this melts my heart in a good way. I, for one, am an advocate of selling counterfeit drugs that came from questionable sources which poor people often clings to because they have no money. By creating such a thing, perhaps we can combat this growing pain in the medical field and put an end to this underground trade which even registered doctors are facilitating, sadly. Anyway though, kudos to these kids for integrating blockchain and showing people that it's not exclusive to FinTech but also has its own various applications on other fields!

From what I noticed, majority of ICO projects that related to medical always failed. That thinks of me that blockchain isn't really fit to medical industry. But these guys successfully explained or shows to what are the benefits and advantages of applying blockchain on that field and won the 2nd place. I wonder what's the concept of the team who got the first place?

Thanks for sharing this. I know that the IT sector in that country is one of the best in the world and I'm glad that students are seeing blockchain based technology as a new trend and I'm sure it will bring something to the country and it could be a test bed how blockchain can help the fight against drugs and other illegal activity.

Very cool idea--it's nice to see blockchain tech being used for something other than a scammy ICO.  I'm not sure how widespread the problem of counterfeit drugs is, but the consequences of it can be dire (obviously).  I also don't know if the solution lies in using a blockchain, but it's very nice to see young folks getting into this and at least coming up with ideas to combat counterfeit medicines.

Yeah, likely because the devs of those projects only wanted to make money for themselves and didn't really need a coin to sell in order to solve any particular problem.  I remember one a few months back that scammed its investors, though I can't recall which one it was.  They made a lot of broad claims and promises and none of it materialized. 

As to your second statement, I kind of agree.  It's been 10 years since bitcoin's blockchain was introduced and I don't think anything blockchain-related been incorporated into the medical field in any meaningful way.  That doesn't mean it'll never happen, but I wonder if it's ever going to solve any problems in medicine or any other unrelated field.

This what bothers me the most about blockchain startups, you always here general statements like "blockchain will solve X", but no one ever explains how it will work in detail, why blockchain works, how it compares to existing solutions and so on. And where are proofs of concepts, why no one is making simplified versions of their blockchains that are going to save the world?

This is not to criticize the project from the article, because I don't know anything about it, but the general state of blockchain is quite sad.

Although this sounds cool, I have my own reservations about it. One of the reasons why no one can counterfeit anything within the Blockchain is that it is a digital asset. But when you apply this Blockchain technology to a physical asset such as drugs, then there is always a chance of foul play. I have read multiple threads, where users have discussed the application of Blockchain in physical assets to prevent counterfeiting. But I found none of their arguments convincing enough. Linking Blockchain with physical assets always cause issues.

Now don't tell me that they will implant a digital chip to each drug packet. Although it is effective, it can increase the prices by 10x or 20x. And unfortunately, drugs can't be administered in the digital form. They are ineffective unless they are given in the physical form. We can debate about it for days on end. But for me, no reliable solution is in sight.

Very soon, blockchain technology would be a full course in every institution now, and I can see that we have some universities already that are taking it and giving certificate for it. I think most people. Governments and organizations deeply understand the whole concept of blockchain technology and they have seen that it could bring a major solution to some of their long lasting problem both in the technology industry and in their financial system.

I was also amazed to even read this morning that a whole china that is been against bitcoin is now even planning to develop their own cryptocurrency, an without them applying the technology of blockchain to their financial system, there is no way they would have thought of even creating crypto. Congrats to these guys, this is really a stepping stone.

At first I thought that it is about drugs and they've done it connecting to the unstoppable drug use in our country but I think that is the wrong drugs. This seems to be a great application of Blockchain! At least, it can really help to avoid companies that make very similar fake products and sell them to patients. I guess it's an especially serious problem when it comes to expensive medication like the one people take when they have cancer. And there's indeed nothing better than blockchain to make sure that only licensed stuff gets through. However, it cannot help prevent pharmaceutical companies from making money on people by selling them something that is, best case scenario, useless or even harmful. Anyway, a good goal, and a good idea to improve things.

A good way to counter some arguments of misinformed people that blockchain is used for paying illegal drugs or criminialities only while it is actually just a system. while infact here blockchain could be used to prevent counterfeited drugs. I'm also looking forward for some of people to create and implement governances voting based on blockchain which invulnerable against hackers.

One of the big reasons why counterfeit drugs proliferate in the market is because genuine drugs put so much profits into their margin and just thinking how much they can get from the people who need the products they are marketing. Sad but true. I hope there can be a project too that will stop this great injustice without resorting to the fake ones.

This is very interesting that at a very young age they were able to adopt or come up with the idea even though blockchain tech is just beginning to academically seep its way into the country.

Would love to get more into the details of the project like:

1. how they developed it alongside the pharma industry?
2. from what platform the blockchain tech was based on or did they come up with their own?
3. final output/further development of their project, proprietary or open-source?
4. the major proponent/s are/is, student/s, the prof or team effort?

It is a good initiative as counterfeit products are rampant in third world countries and especially if you are taking fake medicines it will cause adverse health issues and it is criminal to play with other peoples life to earn more money and if that can be crushed by these innovation then it is well and good and all the third world countries have to take initiative on this route to crush the counterfeit market.
