Hello everyone,

I was wondering if it would be advisable - because I know it can be achieved without much trouble - do host the wallet files on an external disc drive.

Will it stress particularly the disc drive in question?

Will there be any latency due to this?

Thank you for considering my questions! Smiley

No problem at all,its fine if you install wallets on second or third harddisk drive on your pc ive did this in the past and no issues at all as far as your pc is able to detect the external hard disk you will be fine, just make sure you dont leave your private keys on your hard disk because  you will lose your coins if your hard disk died one day

You don't want to do that because the files might easily get crashed or something,i'd reconsider my decision if i were you, just install the whole wallet and blockchain data in the external hard disk from the start instead of moving it,it will be painful if the data got corrupted after wasting your mobile data and energy synching the whole blockchain data

it's also not a problem, but as we knew external disc with laptop maybe would be a problem someday. As long as you can minimize the problem it will be fine, and make sure you use ssd external disc just to make more faster

You have to be sensitive if you are keeping the wallet files. I advise you to save also a copy of your wallet.dat or if its possible for you to keep a copy of your private key written stored on a piece of paper.

You are probably right.

I have seen some times blockchain data file available for downloading, so that might be a solution?

Because the case is that I just ordered the external disc drive, and I am a bit impatient you see! Cheesy

What do you think about downloading the blockchain database and just make a new install on the external disc drive and add the already-downloaded database to the new installation folder?

it's also not a problem, but as we knew external disc with laptop maybe would be a problem someday. As long as you can minimize the problem it will be fine, and make sure you use ssd external disc just to make more faster

Yes, to make it really safe I will of course keep my private keys elsewhere.

Keeping the wallet.dat did not came immediately to my mind, but for sure I will do it too!

SSD storage is better and stronger than HDD,either external or not they can give up the ghost any point in time so be ready to keep your private keys off the storage and if possbile to safe the wallet.dat file aswell, keep them in a very secured environment that is private to you only

There were incidents before that they've tried to back it up but it seems that the file they've saved was corrupted so be careful doing that. Good luck with it!

It should work because ive seen few projects that extracted their blockchain data into .ZIP file for people to download and place in the right directory using file managers before launching the wallet for the wallet to recognize the data successfully  instead of syncing the whole data from scratch again,i tried this with worktips project and it works

It should not be a problem at all, just be sure that you always have access to this external disc and if so, just leave this drive for this purposes only. This will increase the security of your funds. I would also check this drive with antivirus software, every time you connect it to your main PC.

There is no harm in undertaking such actions. I have installed wallets from an external disc several times without any issues. As a matter of precaution just make sure such things are done with your personal external discs and not one that you share with people in order to be on a safer side.

Hello everyone,

I was wondering if it would be advisable - because I know it can be achieved without much trouble - do host the wallet files on an external disc drive.

Will it stress particularly the disc drive in question?

Will there be any latency due to this?

Thank you for considering my questions! Smiley

There will be a delay, but everything will depend on the speed of your disk. Also, for ease of use, you can write a script so that the blockchain with all the files is in one place, it is very convenient if you store everything on an external drive or flash drive.

Example script(only Windows):

@echo off
cd /d %~dp0
start %CD%/bitcoin-qt.exe -datadir=%CD%
exit

Instead you bitcoin-qt.exe need to specify the main file of your wallet and save it with extension .bat
Then put the file that you created in the same directory with the wallet and run only from it.

Mostly there won't be any problem at all, and speed of the wallet not depend too much on type of hardish or ssd, or even speed of internet when it synced. Just make sure to keep the private key carefully.
And sometimes, external hardish would likely to break, but you just need to keep private key to recover it.

Yes, of course, the blockchain can be stored on an external hard drive. To make work faster, use a fast interface (for example, USB3) and fast disks.
If the wallet program does not provide for the choice of a place to store the blockchain, I use symbolic links.

Not only does this not create problems, it is best done.
A wallet with a lot of money is best placed on a computer that does not have a permanent Internet connection or on removable media that is not always connected to the network.
So you protect yourself from hacker attacks and viruses.

If you have your wallet files on external hard disk, inasmuch as it will be connected to the internet whenever you connect it to your PC during use, it can still be hacked. However, a wallet does not just get hacked if there is no linkage of its private security details, because it is not the same as a hardware wallet and neither is it the same as an offline wallet, except you have the files of an offline wallet on it.
