I don't think Real Madrid performance was low in this season not to lift the trophy, just that Barcelona was lucky to maintain the position not to allow Real Madrid to take the position back until it was clear that Barcelona will be the champion this season. All the Real Madrid players did well despite they did not win any trophy this season but their position still make some people praise them, because they beat some clubs in this tournament to maintain a good position.
