I found an article about this case on a local news portal, but now I see that there's information about it in English as well. Some people were using a Nuclear power station to mine Bitcoin in Ukraine. It is likely that the guarding personnel was also involved in the process. The investigation is not over yet. A link to read more: https://bitnewsbot.com/atomic-wealth-cryptocurrency-mining-operation-foiled-at-ukrainian-nuclear-plant-report/.
It's nice that people used clean energy to mine Bitcoin, I guess, but also sad that people keep trying to profit by cheating and using the resources that don't belong to them.

What part of stealing resources is nice? it's not sad man, just pathetic. They only try to gain money by it nothing else. If they really want to use clean energy they can go with wind power or solar power. Create it by themselves and not stealing from the government.

Edit: Curious by clean energy mining that you say I found this article Surprise! Majority of BTC Energy Sourced from Hydro / Wind / Solar

Energy companies charge the public extortionate prices & way over charge so this could be seen as a victory for the average joe. It’s quite amusing to see this to be honest.

I don't see any stealing here. Only see people making good use of affordable clean energy to mine their Bitcoin. No one should act holier than thou in this matter as it could be that they are paying for the said energy. It takes government next to nothing to generate power compared to the how much money they charge users for it.

Again, it is the duty of the power authority or the power company to monitor the energy consumption and know who uses what. Nuclear power plant is complex but one of the cheapest sources of energy.

I know from another article that the person has mined almost nothing.

The fact that a guard can have access to facilities is rather something not very reassuring. Knowing they know nothing about nuclear they could have easily compromised the security. It's pure recklessness.  I'm not sure what you wanted to say with the clean energy, but nuclear is far from being clean.

...

Got to visit a nuclear plant, I promise you, you will see nothing funny after

Nuclear energy is a form of energy that is not recommended from beginning to end. It does not seem right to me that the entity with a mission like Bitcoin uses nuclear energy.

Green energy is a better option than nuclear energy both for human health and for future generations.

I am sure employees of the power plant are also involved. I have a question here are these facilities not in the control of government-run forces and the government? I mean how were these guys able to set up a mining rig there? This is a serious issue and I am sure these guys will go behind bars for a long time.

Such a situation demonstrates how vulnerable are Nuclear power plants are in Ukraine. Any terrorist can get access to them if such kind of security is provided there.

Unfortunately, people with low wages seek to profit not only legally but also illegally. The situation on the Ukrainian AEC is the best example of frankly crazy deeds in order to enrich themselves

This is a very bad thing. I believe that such actions are unacceptable. Perpetrators must be jailed for at least 10 years. It seems to me that Ukrainian cybersecurity needs to control illegal mining and interruptions in the work of large energy structures.  Angry Angry Angry

Its the same for the people who mine altcoins by putting malware on your device without the owner permission these people took it too far.
With their greediness, they have done a thing which makes their government have enough reason to ban all of the Cryptocurrencies on their country.

Let's not hope so. But this kind of consequences is possible.

That's right, I also think that nuclear energy might be friendly to their wallets but not friendly to humans. Moreover, the resources needed to mine bitcoin is not small, it has even drawn a lot protest from the government because the resources are too big.

And this is very risky for humans and bitcoin itself, will make bitcoin worse in eyes government because of these people's insanity. I hope that crazy person will soon be punished so as not to make things worse and defame the name bitcoin or other crypto.

If there was any attempt of such mining, this is because security measures are poor or almost nonexistent. We are talking about Ukraine, and the situation in that country is such that everyone is trying to survive and make some extra money. Guarding personnel is simply bribed to allow entry of equipment for mining, but someone obviously could not keep his mouth shut and authorities are finding out about that little operation.

The idea of using nuclear power for crypto mining is not new, Belarus president is have plan to build mining farms near a nuclear power plant and use surplus energy for mining Bitcoins.

We will launch the atomic station and there will be surplus energy. I have left some space there – we’ll build farms and we’ll be mining and selling those bitcoins. They say if you have bitcoin it’s not a problem to sell it, right?

Quite certain I read in 2017 also of several new nuclear plants in the Russian Federation that was going to power a couple of blockchain hubs, including crypto mining. I even remember that it wasn't all going to be Bitcoin (this was when BTC was really heating up in price). I suppose if you have surplus energy, which you will if you have a modern nuke generating it, then mining all those low value coins in the hope of them rising in the future's a low-risk strategy (since it's surplus).

In any case, will be interesting to see impacts.

That is a good perspective to see that people stole clean energy to mine bitcoin and that too from a nuclear power station  Cheesy, i wonder how anyone could do such activities inside a nuclear power station, if anyone could do these illegal activities in a nuclear power plant how about their bloody security, it is a serious security breach or lack of it altogether.

Yeah I saw this also at first I thought it was just another random Chernobyl meme (been seeing a lot of this around nowadays) but to be honest it doesn't matter anymore. I think a lot of people tried out different things with networked computers. Used to be libraries and offices now it's places like that where people don't track them well. Bitcoin just happened to be the thing it was used for this time!

I never find nuclear energy to be the clean energy. It is highly radioactive and the same has caused lots and lots of complications in the health of people who are located within specific distance from the nuclear reactor. From my understanding, mining with the illegal energy generated is against law but government need to go for some other energy source for daily life needs as nuclear reactors were highly harmful.

There is nothing magnificent or amazing in stealing energy and using it for monetary gains, even if it includes bitcoins or other crypto. If people want to use nuclear or other cheap sources of electricity, they can do so by visiting Iceland and other countries where renewables are ever present and is the main source of energy for those countries. Although bitcoin was not really the main culprit for this bad news, this somehow puts bitcoin in a rather bad light indirectly, which we know isn't good in any way.

This is outrageous...

Whoever organized this mining operation is really stupid, and really don't care for their lives. We've all seen stories of people stealing electricity from offices, workplaces, and even public places, but this takes it to another level.

To be fair though, these freak accidents are hard to prevent, who would have thought that guards would try and utilize nuclear power to earn a couple of dollars worth of BTC. It's not very recyclable energy and is definitely too much power for mining BTC.

The idea of using nuclear power for crypto mining is not new, Belarus president is have plan to build mining farms near a nuclear power plant and use surplus energy for mining Bitcoins.

If it's the surplus energy, it's not as bad, but I think it's a bit of an overkill using such a dangerous energy source to power BTC mining.

It's nice that people used clean energy to mine Bitcoin, I guess, but also sad that people keep trying to profit by cheating and using the resources that don't belong to them.
They really didn't think that they would be caught because they were employees at the Nuclear reactor and it seems that even most if not all of the security detail at the facility were involved in it . I really hope they were able to get a lot of money from this endeavour before they were caught because they will be jailed for a long time.

First, nuclear energy is not clean energy. It may have no carbon emission but it is regularly releasing radiation which is toxic. The possible risks to human health and life if a radiation leak occurs from nuclear power plants are very deadly.

This is not the first time I read of an illegally concealed crypto mining. I guess this is brought by the very high cost of crypto mining especially Bitcoin. Some are attracted to it but do not have the means, prompting them to use resources that are not theirs. Let's see how the investigation ends.
