I don’t start many topics, and certainly not that many in the altcoin section, but I’m very interested in knowing 1) the community’s opinion about proof-of-stake coins, and 2) which ones are the best in terms of rewards AND potential price gains.  I don’t see a lot of discussion about PoS coins, which sort of surprises me—I would think more people would be interested in the passive earning aspects of them, and owning them seems to be a decent alternative to mining (hard to do these days).

PIVX was one of my favorites for a while, but I gradually lost interest in it since I wasn’t staking many coins and the price kept falling.  It was $3 when it first caught my eye, and it’s lost most of its value since then.  I’m of the opinion that you have to cut your losses at some point, and I finally had enough.

NEO is currently the only altcoin I own, and it’s not strictly PoS if I’m not mistaken.  One of the draws for me is that you don’t have to keep a wallet running 24/7, and since my internet connection is pretty spotty at times, that’s important.  I’m not sure if NEO is ever going to get back to where it was at its high (and it’s down a lot now), but it does seem to hold its value better than PIVX has.
Has anyone had any success with PoS coins?

Anyone here prefer them over the typical PoW altcoin?  If yes, I’d like to hear which ones you like as long-term investments and why.   Thanks, guys.

I'm not going to give you any recommendations on which altcoin to use, but there are plenty of sites to see profitability on PoS vs PoW vs Mn vs other types of cryptos. Most here these days are in for bounty/airdrop campaigns, It's harder to gain judgement on any particular coin due to the nature of every person, investor and etc will recommend you a different coin.

In altcoins, specifically here on Bitcointalk and other Anns, there was a growing trend for MN coins and becoming node owners, but this trend has mostly died out earlier this year.

On PoS

There's a reason Ethereum's network is switching to PoS from PoW, in terms of the functions of how PoS secures network, it still remains king in terms of efficiency and ease-of-use. Almost all new coins to launch, the vast majority are secured by PoS, DPoS (delegated) and SPoS (Vsystem Sunny King's latest crypto). Vsys is currently the most interesting crypto with PoS for me, they are moving pretty quickly aswell. Just note, I was a marketing advisor for them, so I may be biased here.

I also have Neo, but I don't really muck around with PoS coins anymore, it's more about which coins have solid foundations and can grow naturally in the future, acting more as investment vehicles more than making steady ROI on coins, which is probably the most major thought process for most. Sure you can invest big sums for PoS and hope for returns, but you may end up getting tortured by in-activeness of the coin team or trends going out of style; much like your situation with PiVX; in which for all intensive purposes, is a dead coin (at this current point in the greater climate).

If you're really looking for a PoS-based coin, that are relatively stable, any from the top 50 will just about do. If you want to delve deeper, then you have to be consistently aware and attentive about the coin team's progress and ultimately where that particular coin is heading, much like a shorter would do. I would suggest to be ready to acquire any profits and move on the moment there's lack of team direction, adoption, integration or progress from any of these teams.

I won't consider this advice, but all altcoins are very butchered-up atm, many are at all-time-lows vs BTC pairing. While it's speculative to say this may change, it certainty does appear that there may be big opprutunities out there for some people willing to take a risk.

Easy Returns from POS coins is why i choose POS over POW coins, no need for mining rigs and farms, its just you and your wallet,i cant recommend any POS coins for you but you will be safer if you invest in old POS coins and if you come across any new POS coin make sure the returns are reasonable,if the rewards its too good to be real its probably it is,many new POS coins are mostly ponzi schemes

I have lost interest in POS coins. All coins I was previously staking were either abandoned or like dead now  Cheesy I sucked at picking coins to stake. There was a time when Veil was making some noise here but I have no update on that coin now. I read before that their wallet is not that friendly.

I try to mine coins: universe(uni), bitradio(bro) on my micro pc. Since it does not consume much and allows me to get new coins. But unfortunately with current rates of income is practically no. Now it all rests on enthusiasm. But everyday I ask myself, maybe it is time to turn off and leave these coins alone.

tldr;  The market value of PoS coins are not yet discovered.

part i
1.  The market is extremely over bought on BTC.
2.  Alot of capital got burnt buying up ETH only to discover it is fundamentally BTC.  Just another POW chain with limited tps.
3.  POW is and will be the kingmaker product, but all POW chains must pay for the hash +/- the same rate as BTC.  Hash is easy to allocate instantaneously, and the stats already show most chains payout the same per unit of Hash.
4.  So hash is a commodity, just like electricity.

part ii
5.  Well nearly all the POW chains are dominated by a select few pools, technology manufactures, and regions (*Ji-nnnna).
6.  Producing pow blocks for the average Joe, nope not going to happen for any liquid chains.
7.  Producing pos blocks for the average Joe, easy got a PC and $20 bucks to invest HODL and stake?

The public market hasn't got to even clue 1.
(They will eventually like in 2 years start to grasp the bigger fuller picture.)

You can't make POW, then it ain't 'your' coin.
You can make POS, then you can truly identify with the 'be your own bank' concept.

Personally, i'm waiting for Eth 2.0 to stake Ether
I'm interested as well.
And so am I, though I've heard ETH isn't going to be stake-able for quite some time.  The exact timeframe for it nobody seems to be able to say.

much like your situation with PiVX; in which for all intensive purposes, is a dead coin.
Yeah, I hear you.  It's unfortunate that that's the case, because PIVX seems like it has so much potential as an actual currency.  Quick confirmation times, low fees, ability to stake for a profit....there's a lot to like about it, and yet the price just keeps sinking and nobody seems to be using it.  And PIVX isn't the only coin like that.  There are too many examples of them, and I think the market has way too many coins available with too much redundancy, i.e., nothing distinguishing one from the next.

Anyway, thank you tk808 for your thoughtful reply; I do appreciate it.
