Canada being a crypto friendly country has got more number of bitcoin ATMs. Everywhere new ways bitcoin is taken away from the common people who are new to the cryptocurrency usage. Here in Winnipeg, a city of Canada simple trick was played with posters being placed along the side of the BITCOIN ATM. The poster has the description mentioned bitcoin ATM under software update. For purchase and deposit don't use your own wallets, use the one that is mentioned with a QR code on the poster.

Police mentioned those posters weren't put by the Bitcoin ATM owners, This is a simple trick and people are buying and depositing to someone else which is irreversible. Also, suggested not to use ATMs if you aren't familiar with its usage. Importantly never buy and send to unknown wallets, send only to known wallets which is controlled by you or a person next to you.

Even though there is warnings some will still continue to loss their funds, it isn't the mistake of the police and here the users needs to be more cautious. I expect such a level of support from police from every country which isn't a fair expectation, but this will happen someday.

The basic problem is (nearly everywhere in the world) is that people has little or no financial knowledge...
They usually even don't know how credit cards work, they just use credit cards and they end up with serious debt...
Bitcoin is a very specialized part of the financial market so if someone don't know the basics, he/she won't have a clue about bitcoin, because you can't just read in the newspaper/talk about it in the local bar, how to deal with bitcoin....
I know that the knowledge can be found on the internet but people usually don't want to search and read for the desired information, but they usually ask their family/colleague/etc... and they will trust the answer even if it's not 100% legit...

You have to be very stupid if you go to a ATM and then transfer money to a unknown address that was posted on a wall, next to a ATM.  Roll Eyes  Most of these ATMs provide you with a call centre number, if you get stuck, so why do people still put their trust in random posters that are plastered on a wall?

There are no medicine for stupidity and a fool are soon parted with their money. Scammers will always find new ways to scam people out of their money, like fitting fake panels on ATMs with pinhole cameras to capture their ATM pin, linked to their debit card.  Tongue

Its sounds like withdrawing your own money from ATM and keep them in someone's wallet, anyone with the little knowledge will do this?

Its sad to hear there are dump people living in this earth who can't find this is a scam. Embarrassed

But people buying bitcoins from ATM is not that much from an exchange so its not a big problem though, let the people to learn lessons.

Crypto atm machine is really growing, I could also see that some numbers of crypto atm has been installed in the united states, which the last news I hear about one of them was being stolen by a cryptocurrency thief and nobody know what those ones would have done about it.

I didn’t know why we have some set of people that the only thing they have come to life to do is just to collect funds from people in any way they can and any opportunity, how would people have ever imagine that they could have been paying into wrong address with the stunt some atm thieves pulled here. It is a good thing that the government is beginning to be protective of cryptocurrency users, unlike in the past that they usually neglect anyone that has something t do with cryptocurrency.

I am actually surprised that hackers havent developed some type of Bitcoin ATM skimmers like they have for regular ATMs owned by the banks. That is when things will become really crazy when they develop those.

This is the sad reality, criminals and hackers would always find their way out in any innovation.  Bitcoin ATMs are new to many cryptocurrency enthusiasts and as  such those who are privileged to have some in their countries must try as much as possible to make good use of it.

A good portion of this forum consists of threads about how governments are going to kill Bitcoin and how they will fail, but here we have an example of a government actually helping Bitcoin's ecosystem by fighting scammers. And this is not the first time Canada is doing something that can be described as "pro-Bitcoin", in the past they have advised to use Bitcoin for buying weed, after they legalized it, because the US was monitoring banking transactions related to those products.

You're right, that's why you can only avoid them if you have sufficient knowledge and own strategies to get rid of them. You can find scammers and hackers everywhere like a trickster, they will always think of some technique or strategies to fool you and take advantage on you. We have to be aware, cautious and attentive always.

Some time ago, we read the news that some people in Canada paid taxes on Bitcoin ATMs which is really incredibly stupid, but now some fraudsters put up posters with their address trying to trick users to send money to them. Maybe next move will be to print some fake tax notice and put it in people mail box with instructions how to pay tax with BTC.

In this case police is not protect Bitcoin, they just prevent people to get scamed and then come to them to solve that problem. If case is end up in court, this is just additional expense for state. It's a lot cheaper this way, and who knows, maybe every ATM will have its keeper soon.

There are already some cases similar to that. People receive emails that claim to be from their government in which they have been found to be transacting with cryptocurrencies and need to pay taxes in Bitcoin for their deals. And some people fall for it not even considering why your government would accept a payment in Bitcoins in the first place.

I must admit that it is a bit more technical to use bitcoin and a user has to be extra cautious while using bitcoin. One click and all your money is vanished.
This is the reason why a person has to first understand what the technology is all about and then begin to use bitcoin.
I have seen many people blindly putting money in wallets without even bothering to know if the wallet is actually a genuine one or not.

The ATM was illegal I guess. I have heard stories of people installing illegal ATM themselves, which they used to steal people's bank information. Never really experienced one myself. This is an eye opener for public ATM users.
I normally check any ATM for suspicious devices attached to steal customers information. I guess I now have to be mindful of both the spy devices and fake ATM

Or they(the bitcoin atm owners) could put some surveillance camera around their machines to stop inappropriate actions taken by those shitty scammers out of simple minded folks. Some point the police would help the buyers to look out for them, maybe not in a far distant reality they would even guide the people who buy at ATM machines, sad to say this scammers are way downtown posting that fraud posters to scam people.

That's why we always need to be careful for making transactions specially using bitcoin ATM.  If you don't know how to use it much better to avoid using it. ATM is simple and fastest way of making transactions even in bitcoin but it is not secured.

It was a nice move of the police. It's not their obligation to warn nor care for others they don't basically know but they still have the initiative to do it so. Although it is really a stupid act to send to a wallet you don't know, but we can't do anything about it. It'll just serve as a lesson to them. But this only implies that you should always be careful about your bitcoin and not to give your trust easily.

I don’t ever think that those ones have any investment in bitcoin because if they do, they would not be carrying all those news. You must understand that when you go to a church or a public speaking place, it is not everyone that came to the gathering came for the purpose for which the program was established, but some came to steal while some came for other negative hidden agendas.

That is also the case of cryptocurrency market, not everyone that you see in this forum actually came to learn about crypto or to contribute anything meaningful but rather to destroy it, but I am glad they are still getting hint in how government is gradually supporting it. This morning, I just read of an article that stated that government is being persuaded to regulate the crypto for banks.

Doesn't surprised me at all as criminals are also very intelligent and knows how to take advantage of unsuspecting victims here. Good though that the police is stepping up and giving the population a heads-up for this kind of attacks.

That's why it you involved yourself in crypto, you need to educate yourself first so that you won't blame the system if you ever fall for this kind of trick. Because those who became victims needs to point to someone besides themselves, Lol. So knowledge plus be very suspicious and vigilant is the best weapon against this criminals.
