Hello - earlier today I meant to send Bitcoin BTC to an address but accidentally sent BCH Bitcoin cash. I was unable to cancel it before it completed. Does anyone know if I am totally screwed or if there is anyway of contacting the place it went and seeing about getting it back? I did this thru coinbase. thank you

I think there is a way you can get your Bcash back if you sent it to your own BTC walet
If you have the Private keys of that Bitcoin Address, then you can access your Bcash also with that (importing private key).
If you sent it to exchange, I don't think so.

Are you trying to deposit on coinbase or withdrawing through someone's address?

Contacting coinbase (https://support.coinbase.com/customer/portal/emails/new) would be the best thing to do. You may read also the blog that they've made in this someone did it accidentally.

If you did send to an address which is not exist still on their database then you have the chance of getting them back,I did refunded once from coinbase with the bitcoin itself while send to a wrong address but the amount I send it very tiny so I didn;t cared much for that lost amount but coinbase did good job by doing refunds the amount.

The owner of the receiving address can recover your BCH by exporting the address's private key from the BTC wallet and importing it into a BCH wallet. However, they may be unable (or unwilling) to export the private key.

The error is mostly from the user so I hope that the sympathizers of a coinbase support team.
what is the amount?
If it is a large amount and you can communicate with the support team that has access to the private key you will be able to recover your money.
Generally, I have read some similar cases where the support team has sent money from their personal account to the user because the process of recovering money from pvt key takes a lot of time.

With that amount, I assume they will work on it to solve your issue, read some problems like yours which is pretty common errors but end up nothing or just the op on some threads fom reddit, bitcointalk, stackexchange never made an update with the same issue. Hope it got resolved soon.

This is amazing, I thought this would have been lost forever. Exchanges would usually say "when you send the wrong deposit of coin, your fund will be loss and we can't help you" this is because one doesn't own a private key to the exchange. does this mean the exchange will recover it in the future and use it for themselves, without refund to the owner?

I am assuming it will be lost but hoping for some miracle by coinbase and will definitely update the board if it works out. Appreciate all the input!

I don't think thre is a way to reverse such block and this are reason that in every send you get a note of been sure where you are sending to before you finally send it out .

Most especially wallet as the private key are not with you but the exchange , I advice to wait and see what could happen to the coin and if there is no chance to get it back then it means yr coin is gone but I hope it will be reverse since the Walker u sent to have a private key with you .

Thanks. That might be useful to know for people who would make a mistake and thought they bought Bitcoin, but really bought Bitcoin Cash from bitcoin.com's website.

exchanges and big services like Coinbase are going to always be very slow at solving problems like this because it requires human intervention in something that is automatic and also since it is a security related thing with some risks, they put it off. but usually they end up fixing the issue and since your amount ($880 based on your comment) is high, the chances of getting it fixed is high.

Weak hands have been complaining about missing out ever since bitcoin was $1 and never buy the dip.
Whales are those who keep buying the dip.

Yes that website has created alot of confusion among many new adopters. And they also got some Bitcoin.com app and its also the same. I remember there was an individual who downloaded the app, and didn't realise he had an BCH wallet and not BTC. And he went to buy some Bitcoins from either a Bitcoin ATM or privately, and the sender sent him BTC to a BCH wallet and they never arrived.

I think he eventually recovered the BTC since people gave him instructions on how to pull a private key and sync to the BTC chain instead of BCH but it was a big headache for him.

What do you mean you accidentally sent bch instead of BTCBTC? are you saying that you've sent BCH but Bitcoin wallet address
was the one you used for? is that what you're trying to emphasize mate? Because if yes, my answer is I doubt that it will be a big problem
and 50/50 chances you can recover it, but you can try to contact their support.

It's possible they'll keep it. Other exchanges will charge you a labour rate for the work to move private keys around. I seem to remember mentions of 200 Euros an hour from one place, can't remember which.

For some it's simply not viable no matter what they charge. The private key may be used for other purposes or integrated into a wider set up and moving it around and exposing it will be more trouble than pissing off one customer is worth.

I'd be interested to know if all exchanges have public policies about this. They certainly should.

I honestly don't have a problem with Bitcoin Cash, and Roger Ver apart from that. I believe it's good for the network that there's a fork to big blocks/Bitcoin Cash. It might teach us that it's either the right path, or show us what design-decision Bitcoin must avoid.

Good to know to know that they contacted you and I guess they can eventually be helping to solve this problem. The big lesson here, of course, is to be always careful in sending any digital asset to any wallet address as in many cases the transaction can be irreversible and can sometimes involve a lot of hassle and headache. In sending any cryptocurrency, I always check the details three times just in case human errors can get in the way. Hope things will be okay soon on your part.

Thx for all this great insight. To clarify one of the earlier questions, yes I unfort sent BCH to a BTC address.  Unfortunately got their reply (Below) and it looks like it's not going to be resolved.  I may tell the support team I will split it with them if they can find a way!

Thank you for contacting Coinbase about your transaction. According to our records, it appears that you sent BCH to a BTC address. This is an address that can only receive BTC. Unfortunately, these missent BCH funds cannot be recovered.

Why is this the case?
Coinbase does not support transactions where one cryptocurrency is sent to the address of a different cryptocurrency. This type of confusion can occur when cryptocurrencies share identical address formats, such as Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash.

While the two cryptocurrencies may each have identical addresses, they are separate blockchains and the shared address will have a different transaction history depending on which blockchain is being used.
