Well, I am not sure about it, but from what I heard. It could help us from DDoS by using PoW because every miner work as a validator. Validating every transaction and preventing any disruption. Which means it could help us to defend it from the attack.
you can try read it https://www.techopedia.com/will-blockchain-technology-make-ddos-attacks-obsolete/2/33115

Here is the latest tweet of Wikipedia.

Why would someone hack wikipedia?
Is there something that the hacker wants in wiki?
This doesn't makes sense at all.

Maybe the hacker used wiki as the testing ground for something big as one already mentioned. He can't gain anything from wiki anyway. As everyone who has account in wiki can access the site, there is really no money involved here. I guess.

I thought that blockchain can't 100% work to save that site but it can be the different story when wikipedia will be building on the decentralized apps. Basically, what is needed by wikipedia to increase its security and that's the only point.
Even blockchain that still has vulnerability can be hacked by the hackers because it can be used as a back door.
But ddos doesn't always mean if the wiki gets hacked. DDOS will make the site down when the hacked can't find access to the site and he can't go to the inside.

I don't think that blockchain can save any website for that matter. Remember that block chain is still some sort of database so I'm not sure how it can improved any websites to protect it from DDoS attack, just saying. If anything that blockchain can provide, is that it can save the data of wikipedia from being altered by the hackers.

It is up in mine. Just use a VPN there are plenty of free VPN services out there or even Tor browser and keep switching nodes till you find something that works.

DDOS is always guaranteed to be temporary anyway if you just wait but I find it strange wikipedia doesn't use cloudflare or something.

Time for them to consider some kind of blockchain portal maybe eh? Something decentralized maybe and they can show the way for the rest of the internet.

The process of mining is validation, by using pow consensus. We can prevent the data from disruption which means we can prevent the website or everything from DDoS.
that was why people said we can use blockchain technology to prevent the attack.

but I am still curious about it because nobody is talking about this lately.

A DoS attack doesn't destroy the data, it simply denies access to it. Decentralization can help here, but blockchain is not really needed. Sure you could do it, if you somehow wanted to preserve for posterity every tiny little change done to articles, even defacement and mistakes that are quickly fixed.

In simpler terms, just having lots of mirrors (ie. "hydra") in the same way sites like piratebay do is enough.

The wikipedia dumps are large already as they are. Perhaps people should familiarize themselves with having off line local wikipedia mirrors. This can be done with a program like XOWA or Kiwix. I wish i had learned about them BEFORE my internet became garbage and metered, now i need to go elsewhere to procure my own offline copy of it...

A decentralized online encyclopedia would be less vulnerable to DDoS attacks, but I'm not sure how it would work.

I heard that Wikipedia can be downloaded and it would only take 40GB (If there are no images). It may be possible as the poster noted above, to move Wikipedia to a blockchain, but it has its technical challenges. As it stands however, I think the current direction Wikipedia is heading is towards self-sustainability. So, you got to hand it to them as they keep their services running.

The best thing to do really, right now, is to donate to Wikipedia. They need it.

Every system has its weaknesses, even if you decentralize all.

It becomes a matter of costs. You are welcome to try and block Bitcoin, good luck with that... You will probably go bankrupt far before becoming a nuisance. Same thing could be said of the aforementioned site which governments and private entities wanted shutdown, but couldn't.

You can theoretically perform a 51% attack to Bitcoin. Do you have what it takes? Your team? Your organization? Your country? Your group of countries?. Once upon a time (Dec 2017 to Mar 2018) Bitcoin suffered some sort of spamming attack with garbage transactions, which artificially inflated tx price. A little change made by core corrected this...
