I’m sure everyone here will be aware of the protests going on in Hong Kong, yesterday the protesters made the strangest request asking President Trump to liberate them. They didn’t just stop at this request, they chanted the US national anthem and even waved the American flag to send out a message to him. It’s pertinent to note that President Trump has not tweeted on this issue, and if he sends a positive message to them it’ll further damage US relations with China. While I know that it’s impossible for Trump to buy Hong Kong, what happens if he tables an offer to buy it will China agree to sell?.

Politics is quite more complicated. What we see in the media, I believe is only less than 10% - and I mean that in a non-conspiracy theory way. There are just sooo many "actors" or participants that have individual stakes, interests, agendas on the matter. So to narrow the issue down to your question, "Can Trump liberate Hong Kong from China?"

To which the TLDR answer is "No."

But of course, we know that it's more complicated than that. Because of these premises:

Next up, we have to be clear with the language we use. What exactly do we mean when we say "liberate?".

Do we mean forcing a political solution that would grant the HKers, democratic rights and freedoms?

Do we mean that the United States will launch a military attack and station ground troops in Hong Kong?

As much as we feel for the HKers and wish them their freedom, reality is not as simple as it may seem.

One thing leads to another, and we end up turning one of the foremost commercial centers in the world into a dustbin of dead bodies plus a third world war.

But if we do mean the first option, it becomes rather a tricky situation. By legal definition, what is happening in Hong Kong, is slowly - but not yet turning into a rebellion, or a secession. We skipped a few logical steps there because of the complexity of the situation. It's something that nobody wants to talk about - that Hong Kong, literally must find a peaceful way to do this because China will not cede territory simply because its inhabitants want freedom.

Consider this analogy, what if a majority of the entire State of Texas, suddenly wants to secede from the United States? There would be millions of people rallying in Houston and San Antonio, chanting "We want out!". Then they suddenly go to the Russian or Chinese embassy and sing their respective national anthems. Then you could ask, "Can Xi JinPing or Vladimir Putin "liberate" Texas from the US?"

This is probably how China sees the situation. And it gets even more complicated because of the ongoing trade war.

America, can only watch and "influence" the United Nations, but know in mind that China is a part of the UN security council and therefore has veto powers over any resolution that could be put forward. Any political decision that will lead to "freedom for Hong Kong" will not be as easy, sad to say.

Doubt it.

Can't see something like this happening in the list, if something like this were to happen China would retaliate by using violence against the protesters.

Trump can't do much relating to economic issues on China, he can't just use tariffs on them because he wants to win reelection and needs the economy to be propped up for that time.

I think Trump should liberate the US from Washington (its masters), and stop interfering in the affairs of other countries.

That sounds like whether emperor Xi could free Julian Assange from UK&US persecution to me.
You guys are just too young too simple, sometimes naive.

Well despite seeming so ridiculous, Tsar Putin do provide shelter for Edward Snowden in Russia.
So I should not count the probability of Trump liberating Hong Kong or Xi freeing Julian Assanage to pure zero.

However I guess after HK being liberated by US, Bitmex,Binance and Bitfinex would have no choice but add Hong Kong to their no trading service region list next to US.

Right now China is a hot potato for the US and a thorny issue! I don't think Trump would risk it by coming in between China and Hong Kong but common sense and 'The Donald' never seem to exist in the same specrum. With Trump, anything is possible.

Eh, even if this was the case I think this would just fuel further into that narrative that this was a creation of the US and that China is right about that. Unless the people in Hong Kong are able to get a plea to President Trump, and he thinks that it's a good idea, he could try to help them as apart of the trade war. Though I doubt that's something he would do, as it wouldn't truly help the American people.

Trump wants a deal with China. Plain and simple.

China will never let go of Hong Kong. Getting it back was the government's symbol that the country has "come". Losing it for a second time would be considered humiliating.

China will keep it for symbolic reason, even if its economy ever collapses. A much different reason than Denmark keeping Greenland even though it's currently a drain in the coffers.

such a grose idea.  i doubt real hongkongers supported this kind of group, i'm sure they are not part of the majority there. they may all want to exit from the mainland but they are ready to die for their land than anyone colonizing them.

of course not, why would they? they have fought for it almost a century. there might just be negotiation again for this but mainland may still have the power over them.

You still talking bout HK right?

That's why I said there's no way they'd sell it. I mean, they'd be willing to go to war over rocks so it would be unbelievable they'd give up HK. It's just too close for comfort to allow a foreign power to control that spot.

Can China liberate California from USA? There are many cultural and economic differences there, I guess they could become a developed and prosperous independent country without the influence of Washington.

You do understand that the reason we're talking about Donald Trump liberating Hong Kong is because HK isn't supposed to be apart of China, and they're attempting to integrate them as part of their nation through force.

California has always been apart of the US.

He can't even seem to give proper attention to underserved communities what makes us think he will care about people in hong kong

There is a long cultural concept of there only being "One China."

I think this is being carried too far by those in china who would "re integrate Hong Kong."

Hong Kong should be handled as a territory, separate and with it's own rules, but still part of the "One China."

I think he should start with Taiwan, start selling arms to them, recognize the government there and establish diplomatic relations, send "vacationing reservists with tanks and airplanes to train their army" (the way Putin helped Eastern Ukraine), etc. Basically a proxy takeover.  Install permanent military bases there.

The US needs to establish dominance in the South China Sea before any talk of an independent HK can take place.

I'm pretty sure this is what was agreed to by the Chines when Britian handed HK back to the Chinese when the 100 year lease was over. Though they seem to be slowly chipping at this with no real intervention from foreign powers because they're too scared of hurting their own business interests in China.

As not only does China produce a large amount of the goods in the world for large corporations, they also are an emerging market for these companies. So they have to 'play nice' with China to get what they want.
