MetaMask and Ledger Nano

I have a computer where I think dying (see image below) and there I have a MetaMask wallet in Chrome installed in it and I'm not sure if I will be able to recover my stuff there completely. I do have that 12-word seed that you need to recover with it. Has anybody tried importing that to a Ledger Live?

I'm thinking of two ways to back up my funds there, Ideally using Ledger for the safety and security it provides (I haven't tried anything yet)

• Install ETH Address and access it through MEW? (Possibly recovering it through MEW)
• Transfer everything to the new one created from the Ledger Nano Wallet

I'm not sure what to do, possibly there other people who have tried this one? I want to recover the ETH address (in case the inevitable happens) that has Tokens that I really treasure the most.


P.S. My suspicion with my PC is with the Video card that I have. I'm not sure and I haven't tried yet the VGA connection.

Thanks for your suggestion. That's one of the cases that I need to keep in mind but I don't want yet. It's like a last resort thing for me.

How about letting my tokens stay in the address? Any idea? As much as possible, I don't want to move it.

You don't have to move them as long as you are going to keep the seed. It seems that you have a problem with your GPU, so you would be able to recover your tokens anyway from the hard drive.

As long as you have your 12 word seed in a safe place that should not be a problem... you can always install Metamask on another system and recover your funds.

Currencies/tokens are not stored on your device, so as long as you have access to the wallet seed, you are safe.
Try to connect to an external screen (using VGA, DVI, HDMI, S- VIDEO)If the picture is clear, the problem is with GPU, remove your hard drive and send your laptop for maintenance.

If you are satisfied with the Metamask wallet and its chrome extension you don't need to over complicate things. When you get your hardware issues fixed just install Metamask again on the new system and restore your wallet with the seed you have.

Since your hard drive doesn't seem to be damaged, simply connect it to your new computer.

Do you intend to install a new system ? If so, you at least need to boot once from this hard drive to recover anything you need.

If you want to keep your current system, you don't need to do anything. Just connect it to your new hardware and boot from it.
You will be back at your 'old' system without any differences. All your data will be kept. This includes all software installed and of course also the private keys stored.

I remember a few years ago when my motherboard broke on my laptop. I connected my hard-drive to a new laptop. The data and my personal documents were intact but everything else was a mess. Old drivers from the other laptop were installed and the computer started installing new drivers which created compatibility issues. My OS genuine key was blacklisted and I could no longer use that. Tried to call the local Microsoft department to get a new key, they didn't want to exchange it etc etc...
Seems like such hardware changes do create a few issues.

There is no reason for all this drama.

Just keep your twelve word safe. Install metamask again and insert your 12 words. Done. Funds "recovered".

It is impossible to insert 12 words in ledger nano, because it requires 24 words.

So, you will need to send from metamask to ledger nano, or just keep it in metamask address.

All of the personal data and the programs / program data will stay. This includes metamask and all private keys stored by desktop wallets.
Driver issues on the other hand definitely can happen. But after the new drivers have been installed, everything should be working without any flaws again. I don't know what kind of mess windows created on your computer.

The blacklisting does make sense, since microsoft is tying your windows-key to your hardware. I don't know which licence you had, but AFAIK most licence are that you either can install the OS on up to X computer or have it installed simultaneously on X computers at the same time.

But regarding this topic, connecting the hard drive to another computer is definitely fine to gain access to all private keys etc.

You don't need to boot from the hard drive if you connect it to another machine, so you can avoid all the issues regarding drivers, hardware conflicts, non genuine OS, and all the rest.

Either open up your working computer and mount the hard drive normally, or pick up a cheap USB to SATA (or appropriate connector) cable from Amazon for under 10 bucks. Boot from your main hard drive as you usually would, and access the other hard drive like you would any secondary drive or external storage device. From there, you can easily find your Chrome profile and access it as needed, or copy it across to your working computer.

There is no need to move the coins.

Thank you for everyone who suggested and answered my questions here.

Let me be clear on the agenda of this topic. The reason that I wanted to try to make my Meta Mask go to my Ledger is to feel more secure. When I created my Meta Mask Wallet; I wasn't wholly a paranoid person back then, I created it while I was connected to the internet. So I feel like if I would ever visit a website that has some malicious content, it could extract it or something.

I thought there is some way to put the seed of what I have now to Ledger, but I don't think it's possible, just like @bitmover said. So I would keep it like it is now and hoping I wouldn't get hacked if I were ever compromised when using the chrome extension.



Last question guys.

If I have the seed to my account in Meta Mask, how could I verify that seed is to the correct account? I know there are a lot of addresses when using an ETH and I remember when I opened back up my seed, it shows a different address, and I want to make sure that it's the correct account. If that makes any sense

As long as it has the balance (you recognized), then that's your account. I believed you can recognized that easily since you are the owner. If confused, then check that address (coming from that seed) into any ETH explorer site to verify if that's the wallet you are looking (maybe there are stored tokens there you got in the past that will help you determine that's yours.

And yeah, your Metamask, as long as you saved your seed, is safe even your computer got crashed or something. You can easily import the seed the next you install the extension.

After restoring your Metamask wallet I am pretty sure you have to add all the individual erc-20 token addresses for your balance to be displayed correctly just like the first time when you set it up. So don't panic if your wallet looks empty. Just go ahead and add the individual contract addresses of the tokens that are in your account.
