More edit: Okay, I completely missed the last thing "coinbase". Coinbase is an exchange and I think your friend will have very less chance unless the amount is significant. It's very risky for an exchange to perform such jobs to recover a coin. Any idea about the amount?

Yes, possible. As long as your friend has access the private key of the receiving bitcoin wallet address where he sent the BCH.

He can export the private key of the bitcoin wallet address and import it on electrum, there he can access his funds again.

But if he's using an exchange or any custodial wallets, there he must message their customer support and explain what had happened, and request to refund/get back what he had sent wrong coins there, but its easier said than done because the team will sometimes demand for a fee for the recovery of those coins.

Whats the bitcoin wallet being used? If you've been using an exchange wallet on receiving those BCH then you would need the help of such exchange.
As mentioned above if youve been using up wallet like Electrum theres still a possibility.So we need some clarifications here since
the given info isnt really that complete.

If the coins were sent to coinbase, according to this reddit thread, they said they're working for a way and that was almost 2 years ago. I wonder what happened to it hmm... Honestly, If they still can't do it at this time, good luck 'cause it's pretty much not a priority. I hope your friend didn't send it to coinbase.

We are currently working on a way to credit customers who sent BTC to a Coinbase BCH address and working to credit customers who sent BCH to a Coinbase BTC address by accident.

In the future, please only sent BTC to a BTC address, and BCH to a BCH address.

I am not able to give you a time frame as to when you will be credited if you were affected by this, but rest assured we are working on it.

If it is the opposite, it is nice to see it stand with those who make these mistakes.

to @OP As long as you have the private key/seed you are safe. Don’t use random sites to refund your funds. try Electrum

He had send using Coinbase only and all the wallets he used were given by coinbase itself, i mean with in there platform. He doesn't know about electrum and also I don't know either that which is the best wallets for use and store coins like eth and btc.

He was fully using coinbase, wallets as well which are given in the coinbase platform and that is also he can't use it perfectly.

Amount is not big its around 800 or 900 USD equivalent.

He has contacted support but they are not helping him out or I think they have refused to recover.

I guess devs will get a hard time to make that happen since BCH has its legacy address which has corresponding of BTC wallet addy.

It will only possible if they (coinbase or any wallet) will let their users send BCH, using only their unique cashAddr, which wallet that starts "q" (e.g qqpva0kl3tqpxzlt7f56s07mc6ejh6n0pyxznp27up).

And sending BCH to BTC or vice versa is possible as of now.

Amount is not big its around 800 or 900 USD equivalent.

That's a decent amount still, it can be earned for how many months even by stable job. I suggest to contact their support in any means—using their social media account, twitter handle, subreddit, facebook page.

How would coinbase know what a BCH adress is and what a BTC adress is?

They're the same (?) (with the exception of segwit of course. (and BCH "cash" adresses, but still, legacy adresses are still used most.))

Coinbase can't help if it's an outgoing transaction, and if it's incoming, they probably won't help either.

oh uh. last time I check, internal transfers (coinbase to coinbase) can be done off-chain--within their system not in blockchain. You gotta inform your friend about it, no need to opt for an on-chain transaction.

If it is happening in coinbase then surely you will get a help but it may take weeks or months to recover your funds but it will happen.

You can see that someone already pointed out coinbase is giving refunds for the wrong send of btc to bch address and vice versa.
