So after tonight I will hopefully have attended my first Bitcoin meetup, well all crypto likely. It's in nearest large city about 2 hours away and it's taken me nearly 2 years to make it in for 1.

I made a decision about 4 months ago to go to a different groups meetup and that was a mistake. It was more mining focused but they cancelled, left the event advertised, and wasted a good deal of my time lol.

I don't reallly know what to expect, the organizer is actually the guy who sold me my first hardware, always had a good chat with him. So i'm hoping for more or the same.

I'll update on how it goes. Figured I would share, let me know if you've ever attended these types if events, what it was like, the good and the bad

Meetups can be a lot of fun, don't get discouraged if you don't like your first one though!

It took me a bunch of meetups and conferences until I finally started really enjoying them. You need to be able to quickly filter out the people you definitely don't want to talk to, and focus on the ones that actually add value.

I don't know about this meet up in your country, but in my country those meet ups are basically to promote ponzi schemes.
Those ponzi/pyramid may be related to tokens, or exchanges, or arbitrage services (that promise absurd returns everyday) and so on.

What do you expect? Unless you have some project crypto related that you would like to promote, or join, I don't see much of a reason to participate in those meetings. Maybe if someone interesting is going there, such as Vitalik or Antonopoulos or whatever..

That will be nice  Grin I have not gone to any yet but in my social circle and telegram, I have heard people talking about organizing one. It won't be a bad experience, sure it will be a splendid thing to physically see people you have been sharing ideas with. Is just going to be old school association kind of gathering but this will be particularly on cryptocurrency affairs and business. Of course you could hand out with some damsel  Roll Eyes Grin

I've never been on a meetup, but I went on a lecture regarding the adoption of cryptocurrencies a couple of years ago, and it was pretty interesting to me. Oh, and I have friends who are also keeping track of what is going on in the crypto world, so sometimes we have our own little meetups  Cheesy
I am not sure I am okay with meeting other people from my city in a certain place, because the status of cryptocurrencies is not determined yet in my country, so it might attract unnecessary attention of the police that probably still thinks that Bitcoin users equal drug dealers. Academic discussions, on the other thing, can be more productive and interesting, plus if you visit them it does not mean you are a crypto enthusiast. Good luck with the meetup!

I have never had the urge to go to a cryptocurrency-oriented meetup. I mean, what is the point?

Are you just trying to meet like-minded people, build business relationships or what? Most of that can be done on Bitcointalk if you put in the effort.

Genuinely curious, what is the purpose of these meetups?

I dont want to sound paranoid but have you guys ever considered that scammers might organize or attend such meetups pretending to be bitcoin enthusiasts in order to meet as many people as possible that they could potentially scam, rob or follow them home? Basically making checks who is who and who lives where. Maybe I have watched too many movies but the idea is kind of scary.

meet ups i have attended included things like:
hand-to hand trading desk
presentation stage - technologies/innovations/code (no investment talk allowed)
recruiters
general chat with like minded people
product sales stands

its best to try finding out their ethos/agenda for the meets, and avoid the ons trying to 'seek investment'/offer investment ideas

I DO NOT TRADE OR ACT AS ESCROW ON THIS FORUM EVER.

For most here this arena will fill your thoughts for most of the day but you won't have anyone to talk to about it in the real world. It might have been that way for years on end. I can see why meeting actual living humans interested in the same thing as you might be intriguing.

Whether the conversation ever gets beyond -

'I like Bitcoin.'

'So do I. Yay.'

Is another matter.

The only time I've met anyone else interested in it was a computer repair bloke who accepted BTC. It was a rapid conversation but good fun hearing someone else's story.

I've been into one crypto meetup and people who have attended really came from different countries. There were legit projects and crypto related sites that have attended like a crypto news website which I forgot the name but IIRC, they have given me their business card.

And there's one guy who's alone that rotates all over the place talking to everyone and also gave me his business card that includes the website of his crypto business/project and guess what when I visited the website? it's totally error 404, yes the site isn't existing.

It was fun, the food was great and you will find it enjoying if you are into verbal conversation like what the guys posted, some were promoting their hyips but there are still people who really want to advertise the legitimacy of their project.

Good luck on that crypto meetup.

I think proximity could be one of the factors, building real life relationships with similarly oriented individuals and possibly discussing ways of impacting your locality.
I get that all this could also be done on the local groups here on the forum in local boards, but not all nations are represented.

I have for a while now been planning on organizing a sort of seminar; an introduction to Bitcoin. The concept is not yet rife over here. And a lot of publicity is still needed.

I am also trying to think about attending a Bitcoin seminar held in November. But I am worried that it might give me the experience and knowledge I am looking for? Because there are some seminars on Bitcoin that only promote Bitcoin investment projects or platforms, and that makes me very disappointed.

Post the link to it and get some opinions.

'Seminar' immediately conjures up some fairly distasteful associations but I guess there might be some legit ones out there.

What do you want out of it?

Some people do love to meet up other people that do have the same interest.Yes, generally it is just pointless yet we know on how crypto works and how it should be treated.

Anonymity is all we like but mingling with other people is somewhat cant be stopped yet each human being is different in terms of social aspects.

In my case, i havent tried any meet ups on my place but i do see some do have seminars about blockchain and bitcoin discussions.

Have always wanted this experience and I made a move on it to the Texas Bitcoin conference 2 years ago. The idea then was to meet the cryptocurrency shakers in a part of US, get contacts and communicate once in a while on there market and coin opinion. A lot of things happen here that inside information can give you a edge to making better decision.

i've heard meetups can be good for p2p cash trading---lots of buyers around. now that localbitcoins has removed listings for in person cash trades, meetups sound more attractive than ever to me!

where do people find ads for meetups? is there a board/website dedicated to this? the bitcointalk meetup board seems pretty dead.

Meet ups are good. It gives you the whole time to get to know the friends you have been online with and afterwards, makes you to be more serious in the things you discussing on line. The experience is filled with nostalgic sometimes.

I guess it depends on who is hosting the meet up. If the host of the meetup is a mining enthusiast, then expect that the discussion in the meetup will be more on Mining. I attended meets ups as well and most of them are promoting their projects and the recent one is is hosted by Binance here in the Philippines. Going to meetups is a good idea because aside from meeting new friends you can also find a good mentor if you found someone who can hep you out with trading.

Meetup.com if you live in any mid-to-large city, or facebook, if you have an account there it might pop up into your suggestions somewhere if fb knows enough about you. Although it must be noted that at this point most meetups you're likely to find aren't going to be exclusively about Bitcoin, often it's about 'blockchain', or cryptocurrencies/tokens in general.

I have had the same experience as you with this meet up in a venue and most people that they have invited were their colleagues, friends and relatives. At first it was interesting to listen to them but when they start to talk about HYIP, i lost my interest of joining this kind of gathering. I just warned most of my friends but some of them are already taken the bait.
