Good evening BtcTalk people. I hope you're all having a good week.
First off, I am a noob at mining. This is my first rig, an Antminer S9. Xilinx Board.
My PSU is 2500w Lianli PSU. I had a bitmain APW2 but I'm running on 110v so I didn't think it would be good enough.
I believe I am having issues. I have yet to hit the full 13.5TH that I am supposed to, and I believe one of the boards are iffy.
Worth noting, I am on the newest July 31st FW, non multi window active.

- Here is a recent Kernel Log.

From what I can tell, Chain 6 isn't reporting any asic chips? Here is a status page screenshot.

https://imgur.com/a/9RRFIAM

Somethings I've noticed - the miner sounds like its running fine after boot up, then will restart every 5-10minutes.
upon restart different things can happen. One chip seems okay, one will come and go with various amounts of asic (1-63) available, and one will show 63 asic available 0 hash. It's almost like I'm mining 1/3rd of my capability.

Is it okay to remove two of the chips and just run one fulltime in the event that I cannot fix the other two? I'm at my minds end. Please help if possible!

I am sorry if I don't reply right away, I get like 2 hours a day to do my hobbies/chores because I work so much during the week. I will check in when I can. Thank you.

Edit - if you need anything else from me, please just ask.

If your power source is 110v the miner will run abnormally because Antminer s9 is made to run at 240v, not in 110v.

The PSU APW2 never heard this PSU before are you talking about APW3 or APW3?

Can you try to "Test hash board one by one"

If the hashboard running fine in the single hash board it means that the PSU is not giving enough power.
Solution: you need to buy a step-up transformer to be able to run them at full speed.

Thank you good sir, I will have to look into a step-up, perhaps.

I did mean APW3 for sure lol.

I can't seem to have any of the 3 cards remain stable and mining for very long. Eventually they start to restart and go back down to 0GH, where it seems to idle until it wants to mine again, and repeat the cycle.
I am not sure what is going on anymore but I have some time today and tomorrow to try.

Not really true, Antminer S9  is made to run on 12.xx volt DC , how you power up the power supply does not matter, it can be 110v ac , 220v or even a hamster wheel for that matter.

The issue here is that apw3 can only deliver 1200w when on 110v so he needs to run the miner on lower settings.

However the psu he uses is lianli 2500w which iirc correctly does give a total of 1800w on a 110v circuit which should be enough, more than enough to run an S9 even on old non-asicboost firmware.

However according to the kernel log, hashboard 6 is causing the miner to be unstable,  so to answer the question in OP , yes it is perfectly fine to unplug one of the hashboard ( the once you call chip in op, it is hashboard not a chip).

Simply unplug the 3 6pin cables , you don't even need to remover the data cable, then post your results.

To clarify.

You can run two boards. And do 9th.

And most likely your third board is dead just detach it.

To be able to run part of that bad board is not possible with the firmware you have.

To be able to run part of that bad board is not possible with the firmware you have.

I think to be more accurate, it's not really the firmware which forbids him from running a hash board with missing chips, it's rather the direction of the signals between those chips.

The diagram above is way above my understanding, I don't claim to understand how the different signals travel within the board, but what I am sure of is that depending on the chip that burns, you might still be able to run that chip with less than 63 chips, I had some hash boards run fine with some defected chips, while many boards become useless the moment they lose a single chip, which makes me think that it's not really the firmware but rather the signal flow.

I hope someone with better understating about electronics can chime in.

If the hashboard running fine in the single hash board it means that the PSU is not giving enough power.
Solution: you need to buy a step-up transformer to be able to run them at full speed.

Correction, their miners are made to run at 230v @50Hz, this is what they will test their PSUs first and foremost, because, that's the mains in China. The other voltages are more or less lab test conditions. Of course most of those PSUs work happily with a bit less (such as 208v from two 120v phases) or 240v as you get in America for dryer/AC circuits at home or such.

But this also means, slight deviations will get into the danger zone faster, such as going 250v peak that in China would have been a 240v peak...

OP should indeed test each single board separately, and swap data and power cables, the usual procedure. And remember to test them for an hour or so hashing.

And yes, S9s are not meant to run at 110v... maybe if you stick to use two boards only (remove the middle one), like the R4 used to.

Not really true, Antminer S9  is made to run on 12.xx volt DC , how you power up the power supply does not matter, it can be 110v ac , 220v or even a hamster wheel for that matter.

This is theoretically not allowed by most electric codes, no "110v" circuit (actually 120, some places 115) should go above 1500w ever. You are over stressing the circuit and the PSU. But of course technically the input the hashboards want is 12v and some hundred amps (i forgot).

Perhaps using two PSUs from different phases would be better, but then again if you can do that you can also do the 208v "magic" trick...

Hi miners, I open this post again cause I have it seem the same problem and want to know if the OP fixed his problem.

I purchased 1 month ago 2 second hand S9. One work perfectly but on the second, the chain #7 is not displayed in the interface: https://i.imgur.com/a5uuHfC.png.

And here is my kernel log:

I contacted the seller and he tell me that before sending to me the S9 was tested and it worked very good without that problem.

I search then a solution on Internet, I already flashed multiple time the firmware, I changed the power cable position, I inversed the cable to the motherboard, I inversed the PSU with my other S9 who work good, I moved the miner into another piece.

What is strange for me is the Kernel say there is 0 asics on chain[7]:

Code:
driver-btm-c5.c:13421:bitmain_c5_init: Chain[J6] has 63 asic
driver-btm-c5.c:13421:bitmain_c5_init: Chain[J7] has 0 asic
driver-btm-c5.c:13449:bitmain_c5_init: retry Chain[J7] has 0 asic
driver-btm-c5.c:13449:bitmain_c5_init: retry Chain[J7] has 0 asic
driver-btm-c5.c:13449:bitmain_c5_init: retry Chain[J7] has 0 asic
driver-btm-c5.c:13449:bitmain_c5_init: retry Chain[J7] has 0 asic
driver-btm-c5.c:13449:bitmain_c5_init: retry Chain[J7] has 0 asic
driver-btm-c5.c:13449:bitmain_c5_init: retry Chain[J7] has 0 asic
driver-btm-c5.c:13421:bitmain_c5_init: Chain[J8] has 63 asic

But if you look just before the end he set frequency for every asic in Chain[J7].

I'm not very good with electronic and electricity to open this miner and don't want to make it worst as he at least mine at 9TH/s. Somebody can help me by any sort ?

Sorry for my english, I'm from french part of switzerland. Thanks for any help!

I purchased 1 month ago 2 second hand S9. One work perfectly but on the second, the chain #7 is not displayed in the interface...

It's not displayed on the miner status because it's powred off by miner.

driver-btm-c5.c:13421:bitmain_c5_init: Chain[J7] has 0 asic

In plain English, this is a dead hashboard, the S9 you bought could be 4 years old and has not rested expected for the shipping duration to your address, it's perfectly normal for it to lose a board or two, and 90% of the time it starts with the middle board exactly like how your miner did, the middle board doesn't have the best air-flow due to the fan motor, that's why some people like phill use a spacer to allow more cooling.

You could try the basic PSU / ribbon cables switching but chances are, it's a dead hashboard just leave it there and mine with the other 2 boards.

Hi mikeywith, thanks for your answer.

That's what I guessed too, about no rest during 4 years.
You talk about phill but I don't know who he is ?

Yes now I will accept that this miner will mine with only 2 boards. I was afraid that it will consume power for the second hashboard but I guess no if he don't detect it. I can too unplug the second hashboard from power.

At least the seller refund me 33% of the amount.

Best regards.

philipma1957, a fellow bitcointalk member, a very nice lad.

I was afraid that it will consume power for the second hashboard but I guess no if he don't detect it. I can too unplug the second hashboard from power.

It won't consume power, maybe a tiny amount, but it will slow down the boot, the miner will keep trying to read asics for a few seconds, so just unplug the power cord and leave it there.

At least the seller refund me 33% of the amount.

Given that the value of each hash board is slightly less than 33% (You have a control board and a PSU) that's a decent deal, the seller was really more than decent to give you such a refund.
