Any USA based people here have miners hosted in Canada? Just curious if anyone here has done this and if you ran into any issues.

Have some dead Bitmain 17 series hashboards or full miners?
I'll buy them ... send me a PM with what you have and I'll make you an offer!

I have, for quite a bit now, miners hosted "in the ice caves of Hoth" as some of us geeks like to say.  What kind of issues are you concerned about?

Importing gear, and taxes are the big ones.

One host I talked to says that he has to charge me gst on the hosting fee but I can get it refunded somehow. Sounds like a big pain in the ass.

There is a 4% import tax on the gear, and a 14% GST on the hosting costs.

Depends on the deal you get, but for me its still cheaper than trying to import hardware to and host in the US

Biggest issue would be making sure you are dealing with a reputable company, same as anything else. Apart from that it depends from province to province for what taxes you have to pay. If recovering the GST from out of country is anything like small business remittance, it's like 3 forms and weeks of waiting; hosting provider can probably help you out with that.

The other thing to consider is what you would do with the gear after hosting. If you try to bring it to the US down the road you get hit with import fees again. Who are you talking to for hosting? If you don't mind sharing.

There is a 4% import tax on the gear, and a 14% GST on the hosting costs.

What 4%, I thought it was 5% (inline with GST). I always have to pay the PST and GST where I am so that's a sweet 13% burn, really should have registered as a business. Come to think of it your 14% is a HST I think (Harmonized Sales Tax) which is a bitch in some provinces as you pay extra taxes where you normally wouldn't have before. Sorry drifting off-topic lol.

If it was no longer profitable or the host boots me after the contract and the tariff is still in place I'd try to find a Canadian buyer for the gear. If the host forced me to ship right away, I guess I'd either take the hit and pay the tariff to get them to the US, or try to find a trusted Canadian user to take them for a while I sell them (for a % of the sale).

I'm talking with MiningSky in BC. I also contacted CryptoBoreas but haven't heard back yet. Have any other suggestions?

So I've never heard of MiningSky, which doesn't mean much as I don't use hosting. Just be sure to dig deep and be sure - I quickly found this article which appears to tie them to Miningsky.io - https://cryptonews.com.au/story/miningsky-the-future-of-blockchain-infrastructure-66506

Again I'm only finding a few reviews but they don't look promising in regards to their clooudmining operation; if the companies are in fact related. I can't find any review about happy customers from their hosting facility, so proceed with caution just to be sure.

Hopefully you hear back from Cryptoboreas if they have any space available. They are my first choice if I need to host or refer anybody; and that would be Hoth lol. If I hear of anything or something comes to mind I'll try and update you.

I don't think Miningsky.io is related to Miningsky.com, although they both seem to have their offices in Vancouver, about 3.5km apart. Miningsky Technologyies LTD. is a subsidiary of SkyChain Technologies, https://skychaintechnologiesinc.com. Looks like they are a publicly traded company. I'll keep doing research though, can never be too careful.

Heard back from Cryptoboreas and now have gear shipping there in Nov and Dec. I'll update the thread with how it goes.

The expectation is that I'll have to pay 5% GST on the gear to get it into Canada, but I will not have to pay any additional tax on the hosting since I am not a Canadian resident.

The first of the miners I ordered arrived last week in Canada and are now up and running. They were shipped directly to the host company (Cryptoboreas), who paid the import tax and billed me for it. The tax seems to be about 5%. It is not exact since it is billed in CAD so it depends on the exchange rate. The whole thing was pretty simple.

The invoice from the host did include a 13% HST tax for the hosting fee, but they discounted the hosting fee so the total was what they originally quoted me.

The host prefered payment by wire so I spent some time looking for the best way to wire to Canada. My bank charges $35 and gives pretty poor exchange rates. I checked rates at other banks and found them to be approximately the same. I found TransferWise.com, and am very happy with them so far. The site exchanges from USD to CAD at the actual exchange rate and charges very low fees. Total fees for this payment was only 0.59% including the exchange and wire fee. The transfer was completed the same day I initiated it. It also is very useful for wiring USD to other countries. The total cost to wire USD to China is under $5 vs. $45 with my normal bank.

Just another update. All my miners have been delivered and are up and running. I had 2 more shipments, one from Canaan and another one from Bitmain. I paid 5% import tax on the Bitmain order, same as last time. The order from Canaan was for two 1066, and they only charged me 2.5% so I guess I got lucky on that one. For both shipments Fedex contacted me and I just paid the tax directly this time.

Another thing to note, it can take a long time to get miners shipped to northern Canada. My Bitmain order shipped on 12/12, it arrived in Canada on 12/18, and it didn't get delivered until 1/2. I guess I really got screwed by the holidays. The first order from Bitmain in October only took 7 days to arrive.

I used TrasferWise.com again and it worked flawlessly again. I also used Transferwise to wire funds to Bitmain in December with no issue. I highly recommend the service.
