I wasted 6 hours today with expensive crap that the local (Newark de) Tiger direct sold me trying to build my first mining rig.

Asus Intel z87-Pro MOB
Intel Core i7-4770K processor
8 gb 1866 Mhz DDr3 Ram

it's all getting returned tomorow

my preference is Ubuntu, but in a pinch I'll run Windows 7 since I have a valid license)

and for 6 hours I tried to get my MSI -R9 290X video board working and finally at 11:30 tonight I took it all apart and back it goes tomorrow.

I have a power supply and a great video board to start mining with - nw all I need is a great motherboard that actually works.

Who can make a recommendation and please NO INTEL integrated Network adapters because Ubuntu has no drivers for the new Intel Integrated Network adapters.

I want a machine that will handle four video boards for me to do asic-resistant mining and one that will actually load and recognize the onboard network adapter (preferably western digital) and will recognise my MSI R9 290X video board.

I want a recommedation from something you have that actually works - not pie in the sky speculation - I simply don't have the time to dicking around with shit that does not work.

thanks!

I am not sure I understand your dilemma and/or what problems you have had?

Personally I use a low power Sempron cpu, cheap ram and a cheap hard disk together with a Gigabyte UD5 mobo that I run 3x 7970's - 2 in mobo one on riser with a 1050W Corsair psu. Windows 7 64. The rig hashes at about 2.1Mh without pushing too hard. I am replacing this with new and better specific hardware soon, but I haven't had any problems with this per se.

It is a waste of money to use expensive processors and that stuff for mining because it has no bearing on performance, but other than that most mobo's and so on should work without any problems as ong as it has the required PCI-E slots and so on?

Also, I recommend that you use GPU's that can be UNDERvolted. This usually allows you to run high clocks without generating excess heat.

Anyway, not sure I understand what you are asking so hope this helps....

I'm confused, why are you wasting your money/time with GPUs?

Some people use their gaming rigs to mine when not using them. Serious miners will not use GPU's obviously......

Hope that helps with your confusion....

to mine asic resistant coins in addition to my s1 miners and my gridseeds - that's why

there are more coins out there than just bitcoin and litecoin and you might be very surprised to find out the profitability with the right equipment, but that's good for me since there are so many mining lemmings chanting the bitcoin and litecoin mantra.

Dedicated miner or regular PC that mines?

Does it need a case?

If it was me I'd go for a:

ASRock H61 Pro BTC mobo
6 PCIE 1x to 16x USB powered risers
Cheapest dual core celeron you can get
8GB ram
6 x R9 270's or 6 x GTX750Tis
USB thumb drive with BAMT
XFX/Seasonic/EVGA 1000W PSU (for 270's)

Mine @ pools that pay Tx fees & don't mine empty blocks :: kanopool :: ckpool ::
Should bitmain create LPM for all models?
:: Dalcore's Crypto Mining H/W Hosting Directory & Reputation ::

He could mine Litecoins and swap them for Bitcoins.
Or keep the Litecoins i see there looking quite promising these days.

270's are a lot cheaper than 280X's, don't bother about the 270X its just an overclocked 270

6 x 270's will mine just under 3MH/s Scrypt @ under 1000W undervolted and overclocked. Not sure about Scrypt-jane or the other asic resistant variants

Also use BAMT (linux based mining OS that runs of a USB stick) no need for HDD

The other option is the Nvidia 750Ti - Does 320Kh/s @ 60W per card. Downside is mining with cudaminer in windows, its not really designed for bigger setups, but it works and they run very cool. You just need more of them to get up to the same mh/s for a rig

Your problem may not be your mining rig, but Ubuntu.

For dedicated coin mining, one uses the OS that sucks less and gets less in the way.

There are mining dedicated distros like BAMT, SMOS Linux or even WinPE based CraPE. If you choose a generic OS or Linux distro you have to prepare it and deal with it's issues. Windows for sure isn't without them either.

Please read the post again, I was editing it.

Nobody here cares about the drama you are bringing, that's for Ubuntuforums (or on the other side of the fence some MSFT equivalent crap). Coin miners don't care. What matters is maximizing hashrate, reducing upfront and power cost, maximizing ROI. Of course, with some convenience like remote access, monitoring, etc...

If you have a valid Windows license and refuse to even test to see if your hardware works, I will not waste my time. Good luck.

you started the name calling now deal with it - no one asked you for a snide remark. Ubuntu is a tool - a computer is a tool. I take no sides and could care less what I tool I use as long as the tool works.

HI all.

I think is your first rig, so my opinion is:

-Be aware "Sophisticated" MOBO that can be a pain, try to use Comercial models with 4 or 5 PCI-e (split your cards)
-Dont use expensive CPU you dont need them, use Semprom or a cheapest 64bit new CPU if exist.
-Use at least 1.5gb RAM for each GPU card, if you have more RAM you can increase TC and avoid HW.
-Dont use a Case, use Open rigs home made is good
-Use Only 24cm Powered Riser, put the cards separately you need air flow
-Buy a big Fan to help air flow in the cards
-Use HD or SSD drive if you can (cheap USB flash are slow, and gonna die any moment)
-I recommend to use Linux, Debian or your_favorite distro, only with X server(_no_ Desktop Env.), ssh server, and AMD drivers

--IF YOU-- dont want to deal with ssh sessions, Terminals, Nano or Vi editor, Compiling Miners, Downloding with wget. USE WIN

Plus, tunning a Rig take from 3days -7days (optimal values)

I hope this can help

P.S.: (Linux)In some MOBO you have to disable Integrated LAN, and use common PCI LAN Card.
