According to the CoinTelegraph article 5200 Keplerk tobacco shops will start accepting bitcoin payments in form of coupons. I think they not only accept bitcoin payments but also enable customers to buy bitcoin coupons that I think are redeemable but their partner Bitmedia or maybe they are only usable withing their shop network. If anyone here is from France and can share his experience with this I would appreciate.

5200 locations accepting BTC as a payment adoption is huge in my opinion, not only that but it is mentioned in the article that giants like Decathlon and Sephora will start accepting BTC by 2020. What do you think is the quickest way to adoption? Big retailers or small local tobacco or coffee shops which people go to on a daily basis?
I think the quickest way for Bitcoin or crypto adoption is the big retailers.
Because surely it would be published and be announced everywhere when a big names finally accepts crypto as a payment option on their system.
And with those announcement and other stuff surely people would be curious about it and it could get some people to be interested in crypto or Bitcoin.

let's not wish for a big business partner who wants to adopt BTC, even though only a tobacco shop this is part of the progress in adopting bitcoin. actually I do not underestimate the small btc value transactions from this business, I just imagined something small business that would grow big and many other businesses that followed.

Adoption is still adoption no matter how big or small it is. we have to be grateful for it will bring a huge impact in the market flow especially with Bitcoin. I just wish that we could also have that kind of payment option here in our country because there are lots of smokers here. I believe that even larger tobacco companies will also support and adopt Bitcoin as a mode of payment.

In my opinion tobacco shops operates at very small level and it is not easy to adopt btc for them as it involves transaction fees along with technical issues. Moreover you can't pay for a pack of cigarettes in exchange of btc.But the large business needs to adopt btc which will promote the prices and global acceptance of bitcoin and other alts around the world. But we have entered digital world where everyone accepts money through online methods so we cant say when they also start accepting btc also.

Sounds similar to the tobacco shops in Austria selling these "bitcoinbon" coupons, but I believe they do not accept BTC at their shops.

I really wanted to buy one of these coupons but unfortunately I haven't had the chance to yet. They're usually placed next to Amazon and Google gift cards, so they are easy to be noticed by anybody.

This surely create some negative opinion about bitcoin if it gets used on such tobacco and other form of alcohol based stuffs it'll surely be under controversy that bitcoin is purely for drugs and other illegal activities. This should not happen, by the same time decathlon managing to add bitcoin payment by 2020 is truly a big thing to happen.

I see what you mean, Ayiranorea! A lot of people are biased and only think in the box. It is a common thing in human psychology to associate the things in front of them. So if they see they can pay with BTC only/mostly in the tobacco shops they might associate it with the "dark side" of our society. However I think it is a risk worth taking if it brings more awareness and actual use for Bitcoin. Personally I am thinking of ways of how to implement Bitcoin in my city in a more smarter way, but the fact that there is no legal framework for cryptocurrencies yet gives me a lot of hurdles to find solutions for...

Why not? Of course they can. If you're saying that because of the fees, there have 3 choices:

1. Accept payments through centralized wallets whereas transactions are off-chain(e.g. Coinbase)
2. Use the lightning network
3. Continue on with the purchase even though the transaction is still unconfirmed. If the transaction is small enough, it's very unlikely for a customer to attempt to do a doublespend on such a low amount

5200 tobacco shops is not enough to introduced bitcoin to the world but at least mass adopted on progress and i will not so pesimistic to see this because small steps could be good move to makes people in the world know crypto especially bitcoin and i wish this not only a plan which mean they will realize it for next year

It doesn't really give much effect on bitcoin's adoption. Tobacco shops aren't that strong when it comes to promotion and advertising knowing that it's bad for our health. Even if there are a lot of tobbbaco shops and cigarettes being produced, it's still retailers and merchandisers are the one who mostly buy cigarettes. So if the business itself open up for bitcoin payment, only the retailers are the one who can get informed rather than ending customers. Since retailers bought it and they'll sell it again, not all retailers would also accept bitcoin.
It can help but really a small effect only.

Yeah, seems small but still contributing to promote the use of Bitcoin even in small amount. If you can see the point. The point of the tabacco shop here is, it's not only for adoption but also educating people of what is Bitcoin. We should be thankful because they appreciate the real use of Bitcoin. Though i don't agree to use Bitcoin as mode of payment for several reasons. The transaction fees, the time spend on transaction, the price movement and etc. These factors really makes Bitcoin not good on this aspect.

but i am laughing that what was a $2 coffee is too small for utility now being a $15 tobacco is too small for utility.
"quite alot of cigarettes" (facepalm)(sarcastic giggle)
I sort of support kingcolex on this one. I want to use Bitcoin in my daily life, and a good user-friendly solution to make this work, but the current situation is not favorable. When the transaction fee is very small (10 cents or less), then it does not matter. However, I would not pay a $0.5 fee to buy a $2 cup of coffee. The problem is that it also gets worse. Would you pay a $5 fee for a $15 pack of cigarettes, just because you like Bitcoin and you believe in it? And how about when transactions get crazy as they did by the end of 2017. $15 transaction fee for $15 pack of cigarettes is also okay? I would not do that, and I bet most Bitcoin users would not. So if we are talking about adoption, it should be either adoption for the cases of big purchases or there should be something (the LN or some other solution) that allows making small transactions cheap and fast.

a pack of cigarettes or a pouch of tobacco is worth multiple cups of coffee. i know i know you believe using btc is not worth it for daily life stuff. but thats where you been programmed to think it and its hard to deprogram your thinking that btc is useless. yep you probably dont even want to even romance the thought of btc being actually useful in real life. but the reality is it is useful and should continue to be.

but i am laughing that what was a $2 coffee is too small for utility now being a $15 tobacco is too small for utility.
"quite alot of cigarettes" (facepalm)(sarcastic giggle)

To the contrary. People spend quite a lot at tobacco shops. I have bought bongs for $30 cigars, ciggerets and loose tobacco. I also buy butane refills and lighters, rolling paper and filters. I usually spend between
$25-$35 at a time. The least I have spent as a bit over $10. I think any cost under $10 you can use eth, ltc or doge. For anything over $10 I use bitcoin. Due to fees.

Btw I use crypto at least one a week to buy things in my country. Anyone who says bitcoin is useless you should stay away from. Literally, where I am sitting right now (TV room) I can see 25% of the things I have paid for with bitcoin including the TV and the laptop I am using to type this message.

I don't think coupons are anything to get excited over, it's fairly regular stuff for there to be 3rd party companies to see store coupons for BTC, we see it with a lot of our major stores, the only difference is the they are doing it themselves so that's a bit better.

It's in gift cards isn't it? So there wouldn't actually be a lot of fees. So you'd buy a 50 dollar gift card and that'll have fees, but after you can just swipe it at the store and you'll be fine. No fees. Not bad.

That's a piece of great news for the Bitcoin platform, this type of news makes more enthusiastic regarding this cryptocurrency prospect and future, I think in this way, Bitcoin and other cryptocurrency is going to get accepted at least as a payment method in the coming future, I appreciate that they have considered Bitcoin as one of the payment windows for the customer, this type of initiative must enhance the popularity of Bitcoin and people also get a chance to pay Bitcoin in their own real life. of course, Tobacco is a very strong business platform and it will work as an influence to circulate the bitcoin more and more. whatever the case is, It must work as a promotional purpose, So every little step is helpful for Bitcoin and cryptocurrency.

Every single store that adopts bitcoin(for payments) matters, regardless how small. These "small effects" definitely slowly but surely adds up in the long term. Also, stores accepting bitcoin is not for the "publicity", it's actually matters because bitcoin gets to be used for payments.

How can someone tell that tobacco shops won't promote bitcoin adoption, that it doesn't matter? Every shop that is accepting bitcoin is important! Small transaction amount? Nonsense. Tobacco is a multimillion dollar business, it has always been and will be in demand around the whole world. Tobacco business is not just about packs of cigarettes and bad habits. It is a hobby for huge number of collectors and rich people, those people that have huge impact on economy and politics of their and others countries. Good expensive cigar was always considered to be the best present for presidents. So, stop talking nonsense.
