Chinese President Xi Jinping is due to arrive in Nepal on Saturday for talks with Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli and is expected to sign a deal expanding a railway link between the Himalayan nation and Tibet, officials said.
Xi will be the first Chinese president to visit Nepal in 22 years and will arrive from India, where he held talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Landlocked Nepal, a natural buffer between India and China, has been trying to lessen its dependence on New Delhi.
The Chinese leader will meet Oli on Sunday and the two leaders are expected to sign a slew of deals, including the planned extension of the rail link from remote, mountainous Tibet to Nepal's capital, Kathmandu, officials said.
The link will be part of China's Belt and Road Initiative, Xi's signature project that Nepal joined in 2017.
Rajan Bhattarai, one of Oli's top aides, said a feasibility study of the plan had been conducted by Chinese experts.
"An agreement for the preparation of a detailed project report for the railway link is expected to be signed after the prime minister's meeting with President Xi on Sunday," Bhattarai told Reuters.
The report will contain cost estimates, with financing and construction models to be decided, officials said.
Nepal sees the rail link with China as an alternative to its dependence on India. New Delhi accounts for nearly two-thirds of Nepal's trade and is the sole source of its fuel supply.
A prolonged blockade of its border crossings with India in 2015 and 2016 left Nepal short of fuel and medicine for months.
Asian giants India and China have both sought to woo Nepal and have poured in aid and infrastructure investment.
Beijing has helped build or upgrade highways, airports and power plants in Nepal under the Belt and Road infrastructure drive - a string of ports, railways, roads, bridges and other investments tying China to Europe via central and southern Asia.

China has a very smart and long-term policy of spreading influence around the world.
Unlike America and Trump who are giving up globalism and closing in on national frames, China is becoming a major global player and replacing America.
If the China-American trade agreement fails, China already has a plan B.
Many small countries are offered infrastructure construction, and when they are unable to repay their debts, they come under the full influence of China.

China is interested in money the most. They consider India to be a large untapped market. Nepal is not a large interest of China but if it can flood the market of Nepal with the Chinese goods and services, the porous border between Nepal and India would lead them easily to India.
India views China's involvement as a competing power and it's rail and road as track for cultural, economic and military expansion, which is also true.

It's a way to keep India in check, surely those roads would make it easier to move units from Tibet. Before that it would make it easier to dump all their cheap goods on India.

Tibet and Nepal are right in the mountain ranges as boarder between China and India which are poor countries which technology hasn't improved in decades but with China behind them, they could all grow together. China has been building good relationships to its neighboring countries and African countries, they are helping building the countries to survive, media may call it invading but they are not into war. they know no one wins with war.

Nah, I wouldn't be that naive about them. They'd be a worse hegemon than America, they just haven't the capability to directly challenge the US that's why they are biding their time slowly grabbing all these geopolitically important spots, like that 99-year lease on Sri Lanka (which can be used to deny India sea access) and the stalled Nicaragua canal.

That's what the end goal is here, invest heavily in overseas so you're able to 'purchase' favor with the rest of the world.

That's what most countries do to curry favor with other countries. It's one of the biggest reasons the US military spends large amounts of money on military bases in other countries, and spends large amounts of money on foreign aid.

While people may not like foreign aid as they think it is useless (some of it is) people don't understand the economic impact of it and what it does to help out the economy as a whole.

In recent economic statistics China stands high than USA. This has taken place through its long term plans, and the market widening. This too is a reason for the trade war between China and USA. When China makes a move it always have got a bigger plan for future, maybe this won't be known right now. Healthy relation with Nepal is mostly for a Military base of China.

Well that is another way of expanding  and extending their power in far away lands and countries. Some disguise as economic aids, financial assistance etc but with their hidden interest favorable with their country involved. Almost all powerful countries are doing it,not only China.China is scrutinized because of its aggressive move in loaning other country and example to this is happening Nepal.

this is great China can take great advantage of the agreement.
China knows to take advantage of opportunities from poor countries so that they can control the country for their economic growth.

That is a smart move from China. China builds strong bonds with their "neighbor" countries and they also spread their influence.
Additionally to that, making investments in this kind of infrastructure (railway) they strengthen the economy of China due to potential trading with Nepal...

i don't know if its not yet direct challenge when they are the only involve in this trade war. talking about capabilities when China is the only super power left. they can crush any who will oppose to them. US had trillions debt to China, why do you think they keep kissing china's ass in Chinese regions while outside the media keep spreading Chinese government is the worse?

Sri Lanka build projects that weren't useful, they could blame themselves.
