If you want to start trading and ask such questions - you definitely not ready for that, chance that you just loose your money is very big. Actually be ready to lost your depo multiple times, because it is trading and only small ammount of people earning money by daytrading, a lot of experience needed. $500 is enough for daily trade or even long term investments
so, the first thing is you must know your trading style before you start your trading activity

$500 is enough to make a profit of $10-$30 per day, but you have to do a lot of trades (accumulation). Cheap or expensive coins in my opinion are the same, because the most important thing is spread (how much the price of altcoin can go up). For get starters, you can trade on the exchanges that have large volumes such as binance, or on quiet exchanges but have large spreads (the distance between buy & sell orders is very far). But this is more risky to get stuck and requires more than a day to closed the position.
