The poll may or may not reflect what is in the list because this forum do not have the same ratio with the world's population. I cannot even see someone posting for cricket but it is very popular and has a massive following on populated India, Bangladesh and Pakistan.

Anyway, if I am to pick only one then it is soccer. European leagues are going to be exciting next year and then the UEFA.

In my opinion it's better to choose contests for games that are much in demand like e-sports, soccer, nba because that will bring lots of people here. Oh yes, I hope you don't forget that always use escrow in the contests that you make, it will give more confidence to the contest followers.

If OP will sponsor for the price, I would suggest that we contribute also to increase the poll, a little amount that we can afford like from 0.001 btc to 0.005.. I am suggesting this so we can make this competition more exciting, actually it's the prize that really matters, and when it comes to holding the funds, we always have our very trusted escrows in the forum.

This is just a contest so I don't think there is any need for contributions in the form of BTC, the OP has prepared everything so he chooses which voting the most popular sports will be made into a betting contest, but I don't know what contest will be held.

Yeah right, I think @OP has fully sponsored this contest but if anyone wants to donate, I don't think it's a problem. In fact, in my opinion this contest is positive enough to encourage other members in the future to hold similar contests.

I like soccer and i usually wage in soccer and hence i am looking forward to see what contest you will be deciding in the end, i like Tennis too but soccer will be my priority as there are many competition to select from and there are many soccer fans here and it is the most popular sport in the world and then the rest of the sports come  . We already have a English premier league contest and we need a site outside the forum to lock in the prediction that cannot be edited and that would be fair.

Prediction post should be quoted so that it will not be edited anymore. Just like how they are doing in Stake my Address thread.

I posted in favor of Cricket and I am part of a small and long running Cricket fraternity here on Bitcointalk. My fraternity members probably don't know about your contest since they didn't see it most likely.

Cricket has a massive following across the world(Not just 3rd world countries) like Australia, New Zealand, South Africa etc, but I do agree with your point that the majority will most likely favor Soccer over Cricket though which is why Soccer is the best choice here.

You should Quote every prediction right away after they posted because they can edit the post whenever they wanted though I know LoyceV has a Log in which edited posts can be checked from the original post before editing (but I might be wrong also)

I am planning to stage a betting contest. Now I am undecided which sports. I like soccer since it is very popular and its many exciting games. NBA would be perfect too as new season is about to start. And there's also the other popular sports like tennis, mma, e-sport, etc.

I am planning not to allow edits. They can just quote their previous post and then predict again.

My initial plan is purely predicting the winner so I will be looking into matches that are competitive. A correct prediction is 1 pts while a wrong prediction gets you -1 pts. This simple mechanic allows those that missed the prediction (e.g. traveling, working hours, bad internet, etc.) the chance to stay competitive. This is necessary especially when the tournament is coming to an end.

My initial prize pool would be BTC0.02 only. Economy is bad but I wanted this game for a long time. This is just for fun anyway. But there is a chance that I will be putting up more. I read a comment for possible donations. Yes, I think we will be accepting donations from willing sponsors. There will be an escrow for the prize pool (op and sponsors).

For now break-down of the prize would be like:
1st - BTC0.01
2nd - BTC0.005
3rd and 4th - 0.0025BTC each

Anymore suggestions, especially for mechanics? I would be glad.

This way everything will be automated and you will in the end pay to the winners.

Also if you are not taking any entry fees for this, you can announce that anyone can contribute to the winning money voluntarily.

To make it fair without worrying of edited prediction, I suggest to use superbru like the one run in this forum managed by hilariousandco (soccer prediction competition). It is simple and easy to track, you wont need to quote all predictions or maybe archiving every single post in order to avoid edit.
Looking at the pool result at the moment, Basketball is the most favorite one with 10 votes. Unluckily, I think it is not available at superbru IIRC (haven't checked it yet).

Posts don't show as "Edited" on Bitcointalk if they were edited within the first 10 minutes. Admin doesn't keep logs during those 10 minutes either. I scrape mosts posts (usually more than 99.9%) within a few seconds, see Viewing unedited posts and deleted posts, view per post, per user or per topic.

I think you should start a sports prediction contest in NBA  (highest in the poll)

Anyway, as you guys are discussing on whether you archive or quote the user's prediction to avoid cheating. Why not make a list of them in the OP, It would be much easier to keep track of all the participants. Though it needs a lot of effort and time on the OP's edge.

I think maybe you could solve this editing issue if each prediction post would be paired with signed message by the participants with their corresponding Ethereum or Bitcoin addresses.

I picked NBA and Soccer on the poll, NBA would be my first choice since there's a few days left before the regular season starts. Soccer is the second option I chose because I usually bet on the big leagues every weekend. I wanted to vote for esports but they're only interesting when there's tournament and these only happen once every 1 or 2 months while other options in the poll last longer.

Sounds like a good idea.

I suggest NBA because the reg. season is extremely long but starts very soon, perfect timing as you said. The long regular season + postseason also mean that the best tipsters actually win, and not someone by chance.

Besides, I'm just a basketball fan I guess. And many others here are as well (just look at the size of bball prediction threads).

Superbru could have been great for this. But at this moment NBA and basketball are not included in their site. Hoping they will add NBA (league is leading in the pool) soon.

So I guess the best option now is an earlier cut off which could be hours before a match begins.

Why negative points? I guess this is not a way you may conduct a contest. It seems participating in this contest is free of cost? It means you are going to spend 0.02BTC from your own earning? What is the goal of this tournament?

You may have anything as a goal of your contest like these; all these may require your own funds.
1. A contest for spreading awareness of bitcoin payments to rest of people from bitcoiners. (Then this is not an ideal place to conduct a contest as it is a bitcoin community and everyone here already aware of what is bitcoins and its advantages).
2. A contest for introducing a new sport to this community.
3. A contest for making your own gambling business famous.

When a goal is just for fun, it is not an usual practice to spend your own money. You must set an entry fee and there should not be any negative points. There could be a winner for each and every match.
