First of all, don't store your credentials or wallet in one place. I would also suggest not storing your password digitally as that can easily be  lost through a variety of ways; Such as lost, theft, and corruption. Storing your wallet file via a USB is okay, as long as that's not your only backup. You should have a seed which is generated once you create your wallet. This needs to be stored in multiple secure locations.

Create a password which is strong, and you can remember. Alternatively, you could use a offline password manager, but that's down to your discretion as there's pros, and cons to this. If you would like to secure Bitcoin securely without having to worry about the technical aspects then you could invest in a hardware wallet such as the Trezor.

More information about the different kinds of wallets can be found here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1631151.0

Thanks, I feel like an idiot to be honest but I never expected bitcoin to reach the heights it has done back in 2012/13. It started off as something i could do to maybe earn enough for a new laptop or pay for christmas presents, then life moved on and I stopped doing it after I broke up with my ex. I didnt have time for it and the usb pen ended up in a box somewhere and was lost somewhere between my old flat and new one. Ive managed to turn £300 into £840 so far just through a bit of trading and also won a few hundred at a bitcoin casino I found on https://www.best-casino-sites.net/ I'm looking for actual tips now for equip and best practices for mining. I feel like im a bit rusty but after what a good friend told me a few weeks ago, I realise that I need to get as much crypto funds built up as possible over the next couple of years - we all do.

Why not just pursue your trading career? I see you already have knowledge about that. Turning £300 into £840 is a good start. About your gambling activity, all I can say is, you got just luck on your session. Soon it will hurt your wallet in the long run providing all sites on the link is "casino".

Mining status back in 2012/13 is way different in today's mining. But still, if you want some enlightenment for any mining-related concern, make a thread here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=14.0

One thing I'll also add to mining is that it's radically changed since 2012/2013- profit margins are now much tighter, you'll need cheap electricity if you're mining anything from alts to Bitcoin with specialized hardware like FPGAs or ASICs or even just GPUs, and a ton of things have changed overall. The mining sections should be a good place to start if you've identified that your electrical rates are good enough to mine at least reasonably profitably.

If you're looking for an easy but still secure way of storing coins, keeping a hardware wallet and then storing the private key or recovery elsewhere in case the wallet is lost or damaged beyond repair is a relatively simple and secure way of storing your coins. The Ledger Nano S doesn't cost a ton nowadays, and it's a solid piece of hardware that supports plenty of coins should you decide to hold more coins in the future.

Don't be hard on yourself, people make mistakes and there are many othrers who lost more than that. But you will be stupid if you don't learn from your mistakes.
You should learn how to secure your wallets and keep them safe (buy a hardware wallet).

Also, as stated above, mining is not that profitable/cheap as it used to be back in 2012.

Well, TBH mining is not a viable option now. As an individual mining the coins, it would require lot of infrastructure and electricity in abundance, if you are really smart I would suggest you an easy way to get hold of real bitcoins, get into exchanges referral programs. I have earned decent 0,47 BTC by referral programs, of coinswitch, binance, changelly, kucoin etc.

Check out the following info -

1. CoinSwitch Referral Program - Earn 5$ worth of BTC, on every first successful referral, who completes order worth 100$. They are an instant exchange, non custodial service where you can compare the prices of leading exchanges like binance, changelly, changenow, kucoin, idex, simplex etc.

2. Binance - It is so far the largest exchange having liquidity, and its presence globally ( recently started binance USA as a seperate entity), they keep offering various deals on their affiliate program.

Just start trading. Mining has now moved on from its early phase. As what others say, it is now the time where mining is a fight with regards to quantity, AKA how many mining machines you can provide. There's already a lot of miners in the world with most probably a lot better equipment than you. And even if the quality of equipment is the same between you and others, they still have the quantity to make up for it. I'd rather trade now instead tbf, I'd just have to wait and HODL till the right time.

ATTENTION

OP is most likely A SCAMMER
I almost believed his story until he said this:
Ive managed to turn £300 into £840 so far just through a bit of trading and also won a few hundred at a bitcoin casino I found on https://www.best-casino-sites.net/

Lately there have been newbie accounts pretending to be asking for help, but then they start to indirectly advertise their shady websites.
As is the case for OP, he is trying to advertise his brand new(probably scam) gambling website by claiming that he won some BTC from it.

@mikeyk1979 that’s a huge loss but I’m glad you have decided to come back to the crypto world, hopefully this time you’ll have a better experience than last time. Since you’re coming back after quite a while I would suggest you to make a wallet on Electrum download it from it’s official site, do not share it’s keys and password with anyone. Also remember to avoid storing your coins on exchanges, because exchanges often gets hacked and you’ll end up loosing your coins.

Back then you probably didn't know bitcoin would be worth the amount it is today, but we are at that stage now, when bitcoin has grown so much that mining now costs even more than a fortune.
Coming back isn't so easy as you have to start from scratch again, but it also has its good side as you'll definitely not make the same mistakes you made in the past and you'll become a better trader.

You need to take security more seriously and always learn to keep a back up plan, never store passwords or seeds in one place, beware of scammers as they've "grown" alongside the bitcoin and also try to activate a 2fa, this are some of the basics you can incorporate, when you read more threads all around the forum, you'll also learn more.

do not easily give up sometimes life hurts but believe me it is a bridge for you to success, if I suggest you try to learn about trading and practice using a demo account until you are absolutely sure, then if you are sure of your knowledge, you can deposit some amount of money, keep the spirit of life.

Seriously? That's totally BS.
4. Make a deposit and claim your casino bonus
a. Choose your preferred payment method
b. Make a deposit and trigger that bonus

I pity those who will fall for this. And honestly, his story is perfectly plotted.

Domain information

Seriously? That's totally BS.
4. Make a deposit and claim your casino bonus
a. Choose your preferred payment method
b. Make a deposit and trigger that bonus

I pity those who will fall for this. And honestly, his story is perfectly plotted.

Honestly, his story would have been more believable had that site link for casinos was not specifically stated in his post which would suggest that he is somehow advertising that site and which could altogether raise suspicions from the community.

Hi,

Yeah, I really am that stupid. I mined 15k worth of bitcoin back in 2012/13 and then lost the usb pen with the user credentials Sad Anyway, im gonna start from scratch in my free time. I was just wondering, what tips people have that are doing well from it at the moment. I havent attempted it for 6 years so im sure its a very different landscape. Any help/advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance! Smiley

When i first read your post, i thought you lost 15K bitcoins because you mentioned 2012 - 2013 when the value of bitcoin was so less. Anyways if you had still hold them, you would have a good lot of money. Mining bitcoin is not possible today for a common man and if you started again to earn bitcoins it will take a lot time to collect 1.4 BTC.

ATTENTION

nice catch!
He seems to have tried to use emotion by making others think he is weak because of lost that amount and then become less cautious.
If he did not say that he was able to convert 300 to 840 through that site, "it has not been 10 days." We could believe.

Generally, no one will notice this kind of SCAM because it is a mid-level reply if he skillful, he will add a link to a site or a way to get the money back.

Is it a casino?
Weird I tried to check their website but I can't seem to find their deposit page or signup page.

What I see there is a list of the casino with a category in the top left of the page.
Never heard those casinos listed from their site it is not related to crypto either.

It seems that OP owns the website but I'm not sure if the list of casinos from their site is legit.
The website is not actually a casino it looks like a portal to gambling casino or probably they just want to gain backlinks from here to their website.

How did you know that the website is a casino?

I'm in the same show as you except for the lost part but, I need more knowledge on how to mine and be sure to secure my credentials properly.
Your pro advices would be very helpful.

Good catch right there. These type of topics are just obvious advertisement of some shady stuff going to give you sketchy links.

Why would he ask someone for help when looks like he already know the answer to his questions? He has a good knowledge to crypto saying he earns from gambling/trading and then posts as he’s pretending to be a dumb one.
