What should I convert my money into?

I have about $1k in local currency (Russian ruble) and I strongly believe that this currency is not the best choice to store money for long periods.

As you might know, there was a Crimea occupation done by Russians about 5 years ago. This was followed by sanctions USA and EU put onto Russia. After that ruble devaluation started. It actually could be stopped by now, at least hindered, as some serious people say, but the Bank of Russia(local fed) doesn't do anything. Though it must and has all resources to.

I suppose I will convert it to either btc or usd, I can't choose what is better... maybe I have to store money %50 in btc and %50 in usd... but I read somewhere there can be another global financial crisis soon... perhaps I could only store it as btc, I know there is a lot of people in Nigeria buying btc because its currency is hyperinflated and majority of population there don't have bank accounts. This is a good start.
Now, you probably know that Bitcoin (and altcoins) prices variation/volatility is big. This makes Bitcoin an interesting investment if you have money you afford to lose, but not "safe" as "savings account".
Bitcoin price, on long term, should grow a lot. But there are big falls too and there's a risk that in the moment you need your money the price is lower than when you bought.
Of course, you can be lucky and get rich by buying Bitcoin and catching the best moment to sell. You or your kids..

Edit: I would probably buy Euro, Bitcoin and maybe gold too (although I'm not sure it makes sense for 2-400$)

It depends if your thinking long-term, or if you actually want to be able to take the money out and be possibly be using it within a couple of hours.

If you want to hold USD, I would recommend transferwise, I have an account there and it's very easy to just deposit funds, and then transfer them into another currency and hold it there - as well as receive transactions from overseas.

For bitcoin, use LBC. Spreads might be a bit worse, and you might even need to verify your ID (not sure about the new rules), but that's usually the safest bet, picking an OTC option. Good luck mate.

The Bank of Russia is dependent on your government so there is little they can do on Russian Ruble devaluation. Russian is always the leader of US opposition over the years. Sanctions from US allies are normal since the end of Wold War 2. Russian won't become poor like many African nations because there are too many resources in your country enough to sustain its population. Leadership is strong. You just have to learn how to minimize your savings devaluation.

The US dollar is neither safe. Trump is at odds with the world. EU and UK aren't closer to the US unlike before. Russian, Chinese and Turkish differences can affect the US dollar too.

Bitcoin, altcoins, gold and silver are good options as long term investments.

You don't have to worry on cashing out bitcoins and altcoins in Russia because you have your own exchange. I think you also have bitcoin ATMs in Russia.

I would say that bitcoin is a good platform as "store of value" for you money in case of worst case scenario you have been describing. I know that is very volatile but if you have plans to be a long term holder then why not? There is also a good chance that hedging your money in bitcoin will yield you a good return in the future specially that bitcoin halving is just around the corner. Good luck.

I would suggest you to divide it into three parts and invest one part into bitcoin, another into Kuwaiti Dinar as it has the highest value when compared with the over all fiat currency and remains I would suggest to invest into gold.  This is just my personal opinion and in case if you don't wanna invest into Kuwaiti Dinar then go for bitcoin and gold alone,  if you don't wanna take any risk then gold will be better option.

I wouldn't really recommend using BTC as a mode of storage for your money right now. BTC is still growing which makes it current phase the best for investors instead.
If your money is currently money you could spend, then feel free to convert to BTC. If you want, you could also look up tethers since its kind of like a fiat but in crypto but its up to you.
Other choice would be to invest in gold, since golds hardly depreciate in price and even banks use them as source of funds when an economic crash happens.

I'd agree. I would say put your money in crypto. I first got into crypto because of a similar lack of faith in my own local currency (the UK decided to destroy its economy by leaving the EU).

Crypto is obviously hugely volatile, which is why some people would suggest to buy USD instead of crypto... but I would still say crypto is preferable. We do have stablecoins that are equivalent to USD, so you can put your money there if you are concerned about losses. But if you are talking about somewhere to keep your money for the longer-term, then bitcoin is as good a place as any, and possibly better than any alternative.

Never keep all your eggs in one bucket - it is a very basic investment advice anyone would give, so follow it! Don't entrust your entire money with bitcoin solely, especially when Russia is so hostile about it. Also bitcoin's price is very dynamic and far from being stable! So it may either bring major profit or major losses! You never know what's goin to happen.

So in your scenario, I would have gone for 20% bitcoin, 40% USD and remining 40% EUR. I have given majority of the weight to currencies (which can be traded legally) because you need to show the proofs to your tax authorities probably!

I like the way you think. It makes good sense to convert your money into something else and preserve value, amidst all thats happening with your Russian Ruble. Of course you're on a bitcoin forum so I'd primarily suggest Bitcoin, if, your risk tolerance is high. Bitcoin is quite volatile and while it has the potential of increasing the value of your "portfolio" greatly, it can also go the other way around.

If you wanna be safe just go with USD or EURO. If you want to risk and earn more, go for Bitcoin.

First thing to ask yourself is if that's all your available cash. If it is, then investing all into Bitcoin may not be such a good idea. The volatility imposes higher risk than investing in other currency/fiat since they're a lot more stable and you could decide longer than bitcoin's price fluctuation which may cut off, or increase, your money in just few hours. USD might be a better choice in this case that your country might face crisis, since local currency and even local stock market may not be a viable choice.

Your concerns is reasonable enough. I don't think bank will ban your account just with 1K USD, I can't find any suspicious for that. If you could hold longer then there is not enough reason why you should convert your fund into USD. That's almost equal to hold your local money. Buy btc would be better option in my opinion. It is not really good to store your money in fiat, the best way to make your money grow fast or atleast higher each year is through investing it in crypto. Though you shouldn't invest all of your earnings in crypto since it is a risk, you should still atleast store some and make sure to pick a certain coin you are confident about being successful. Make sure you check the team and the whitepaper carefully so that you may see if it is really going to be successful someday and make your earnings grow.

Well if you really believe the first part, that the ruble isn't a good store of value, why go with USD?  If you're going to be holding it for the long-term, inflation will work its evil magic and eat away at its purchasing power--maybe not quickly, but it'll happen either way.

Bitcoin is risky, of course, but if I were you that's where I'd be putting your $1k.  Stay away from altcoins, too, and stick with bitcoin.  Don't sue me if you lose money, either.  lol

By the way, thanks for mentioning the devaluation of the ruble.  I generally don't follow world news and have no clue as to what's happening in the economic world of Russia.  I'm assuming you don't have a hyperinflation situation there, right?  How much value has the ruble lost?  I'm just curious.  And you're being very smart by trying to convert your savings into something that'll hold its value.

I supported what you said but you also need to put into consideration the moment when the crypto market usually experiences correction and blood bath. I will advise the OP to switch his holding to bitcoin for now that the block halving is approaching and after when it Q3 of 2021 he can switch his holding to stablecoin (Gold)

I normally says stocks more in remittances and banks that's why I tried to invest some in stocks too atleast I'm not lying. But still prefer to invest more in crypto as we can just use the sometimes the charts alone to analyse it than stocks that needs to know each companies status and news everytime we trade. I would definitely hold it in either bitcoin or gold. That is what I see bitcoin as, a collateral against the world economy, the moment economy goes south there is absolutely no way to recover from that unless you are out of it totally and bitcoin/gold is out of it. You can definitely find other stuff but if you are in foreign currencies, forex, stocks, cash, savings account and whatever else you can think of there is really no way to make it back, hence I would always stay out of it and will always try to stay out of it as much as I can.

If I were OP, I would definitely invest it in Bitcoin while holding for more than a year since Bitcoin will definitely gonna get expensive in no time. Gold holds value pretty well but how will you buy anything with it? It's great if you're planning to hold for a long time but if it's your money for emergencies it's best kept ins something that can be traded fast.
Gold also can be seized unlike cryptocurrencies. There was a story about someone losing gold on the border. You might want to travel to the EU one day when it gets worse in Russia and then they'll steal your gold on the border or tell you to pay tax right there or you'll be denied entry. I'd buy at least some bitcoins but 1k USD is not a lot to play with.

if I suggest it's better to save your money into bitcoin because bitcoin is a good store of value and in the future the price will be more expensive. but bitcoin also has risks because of its volatility. but I don't think that's a problem because with this volatility we can buy cheap and sell when prices are high. we just need to be patient and not easily panic when the price of bitcoin goes down.

The ironic thing here would be the central banks of Russia and China have been accumulating gold over the last ten years and selling their dollar based assets.   The USA on the other hand despite being the largest holder of gold is also stepping further away from this standard by over producing new dollars far beyond GDP growth.

Are you sure Halving really didn't make a positive impact on prices? Try to see the history of Halving. 2012 halving and then 2013 bitcoin moon, also 2016 halving and then 2017 bitcoin moon.

Well.. the hype surrounding the block reward halving had a positive impact on Litecoin. Before the halving occurred, the exchange rates had rallied (from $70 per coin to $135 per coin) during the two months prior to the event. But what surprised me was the sudden crash which almost immediately followed the halving. The exchange rates went down from $135 to $60 in a matter of few months, making it one of the worst performing altcoins. This unusual pattern points to heavy market manipulation by the whales.

What I am saying is that you can't use LTC to predict the Bitcoin prices before or after the block reward halving. Litecoin is prone to market manipulation, while Bitcoin has grown too large for the players to manipulate its exchange rate.

Diversification is good if the holder has two or three coins at most but not again the best thing. If it is hard for investor to trust bitcoin, then he wont be able to keep altcoins for long wither. Now, you probably know that Bitcoin (and altcoins) prices variation/volatility is big. This makes Bitcoin an interesting investment if you have money you afford to lose, but not "safe" as "savings account".
Bitcoin price, on long term, should grow a lot. But there are big falls too and there's a risk that in the moment you need your money the price is lower than when you bought.
Of course, you can be lucky and get rich by buying Bitcoin and catching the best moment to sell. You or your kids..

Many people say the same, you need to analyze the market value? But what that means? You can open coinmarketcap for example and there you can see the current value of bitcoin or any other coin or token. It is good to know that you have more than one income source. Real estate is indeed a beneficial profession. You are going to get huge from it.
