Title kind of says it all. I have a few old addresses that have gotten dusted over time.
They are in separate legacy accounts. So yeah, I could probably import all the private keys into someplace and generate a transaction for a whopping $2 at the moment.
And if BTC goes to $100,000 I might actually have enough for a tank of gas....before tx fees.

So, I was wondering is there / has anyone ever setup an address for people to dump their dust to that when TX feels are low can actually do some good.

Yeah, I know I can just sent to 38ccq12hPFoiSksxUdr6SQ5VosyjY7s9AU http://www.seansoutpost.com/

But I figure someone running a donation address that would take everyone's dust and send it someplace as 1 TX might exist.
If not, which one of you fine people would want to start one?

-Dave

I used to run one. It's still open actually, but no one has been sending anything, and it is a legacy address. I could make a new one that's segwit, probably native segwit too since any address that gets dusted should be in control of an individual. Any exchange or website owned addresses will get swept by those entities anyway.

only a miner or a pool owner can do something like that and only if they own all the private keys required to sepnd all those small dust outputs. because the miner can include a tx in his own block without a fee otherwise others have to pay a fee which may end up being higher than the total.

example: https://blockchair.com/bitcoin/transaction/bb41a757f405890fb0f5856228e23b715702d714d59bf2b1feb70d8b2b4e3e08

No, what I am saying is that I take my .00000777 BTC and send it to an address
You take your .000001 BTC and send it to an address
etc.
It's going to wind up being 1 address with 200 transactions and a fee that is probably 75% of what it has in it to send. But if that number really gets to be $30 or $40 then the charity still gets $10 to $12 and does not have to deal with 200 tiny transactions that may or may not be worth dealing with. They might not know how to use coin control, they might not know to only send when the mempool is empty, etc....

Maybe this helps: whenever I had such dust I've had an uglier approach: I've sent them to one of the altcoin exchanges with low minimum transaction amount and bought some altcoins.
The worse case scenario I know would be consolidating all small inputs for Bitcoin and other altcoins too into BNB (at Binance) until one can turn it into something more meaningful.

Taking this wildly off topic and away from the "lets do good and donate" what exchanges let you deposit such small amounts and trade?

I had a thread, called Feed Some Children. Lemme look for it quick.... but again, it uses a legacy address, and the last donation was around 2015? or 2016 and had to move them around 2017.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=300631.0

I did not stop it, just people must have forgotten about it. I could update it with a new segwit address (and remove all older ones, maybe keep them in the footnotes as historical addresses.)

For info, I keep donations meant for that separate from donations meant for anything else.

What I can also do is wait until fees are low, and then consolidate all the inputs into one transaction every now and then.

I'll go make a segwit address later, try to make it look like bc1qfood or something similar.

I don't think this is a good idea. The motivation for a lot of the dust is to encourage you to spend the coins, so you spend link it with other addresses you own.

If you use a wallet with hardened deriv (e.g. bitcoin core) or a wallet with randomly generated addresses -- I suggest the best thing to do with dust is actually anonymously pastebin your private key (after you are very sure you no longer need it) and let someone else spend it, to provide the ultimate confusion for coin analysis.

Check out gamblingsitefinder.com for a decent list/rankings of crypto casinos. Note: I have no affiliation or interest in it, and don't even agree with all the rankings ... but it's the only uncorrupted review site I'm aware of.

Last time I've done this I deposited to Binance. It was under 1$ worth, it was altcoin, but doesn't think it matters.
However, since I've been already mentioning Binance in my previous post, this one doesn't bring anything. And since you already considered the other post off-topic, I'll remove both posts by tomorrow.

Imho it was not that much off topic because if the end result of the donation is that the other party will have to pay higher fees, you don't really "do good". But I don't want to argue; since it was not useful for you, it doesn't matter: I'll delete.

Don't worry about deleting it. Its actually good useful info I was just worried that it would go from Donation -> Exchange that takes dust -> Arguing about exchanges -> something else.

Since Dabs is re-setting up his donation address and if for whatever reason people want to exchange instead of donating it's good to have the exchange info posted too.

This way for people who come to this thread there are 2 options.

Raw private key ...

I'll take it, LOL, it will be an "off-chain" donation transaction. When I get enough, I'll spend it all to the new bc1qfeedch80zxged6apxyknugt67e47nsw00tpguu address in my thread. If it's enough to buy a bag of food, I'll see what I can do.

I'd have to keep records of it tho, if it's meant to be anonymous, should I not post it in the thread, or I could still post it anyway, let the chainalysis companies figure it out.

I need another set of eyes on this.
I think I am missing something.

Lets start at the beginning.
I am using Mycelium. HD key generation, etc.
I saw the 0.00000777BTC pop up in a wallet that had 0BTC in it so I knew it was dusted.
No idea which of the 100 or so addresses that were in there got dusted, and I really didn't care.

So I sent the .00000777 to the donation address of bc1qfeedch80zxged6apxyknugt67e47nsw00tpguu

Then I looked at it on a blockchain explorer and saw that the transaction I just made came from 18h1VLiRSxTqv12mLE7jrJmJyNQXfyMWuR

https://www.blockchain.com/btc/address/18h1VLiRSxTqv12mLE7jrJmJyNQXfyMWuR

Which only had 1 transaction....the one that put in the .00000777

Now, I'm exhausted it's been a stupid long week. But am I missing something, how did this get dusted?

-Dave

Someone had intentionally sent you (and other addresses) dust.

And it comes with a message, OP return:
Code:
46696e6420707269766b65797320696e207468652070726576696f7573207478206d736720616e6420757365206274636b657967656e2e636f6d20666f722076697375616c697a6174696f6e
"Find privkeys in the previous tx msg and use btckeygen.com for visualization"

There may be more hidden donations than those 777sat dust.
Found it! It's MrFreeDragon's website (Project dev thread)
and there's a high chance that the result is just a "shape image". Advertisement indeed.

it is just advertisement of a website and based on the name of it and the mass spam they have done i'd say there is a good chance that the site is doing something malicious. i wouldn't open the link if i were you! not only because of it being malicious but i wouldn't want to give it any traffic at all.

Yeah, I get that part.
What I don't get is how they dusted an address that had no activity.

Someone had intentionally sent you (and other addresses) dust.
Yeah, I get that part.
What I don't get is how they dusted an address that had no activity.
Ah sorry, I thought you did know because the address is written in your profile.

That's also the answer where the sender got that address  Wink

OK, I'm an idiot.
100% forgot I changed that address when the old one I had on the forum might have had it's private key exposed.
This is what happens when you don't get enough sleep.....

Ok, I guess we'll have to wait until there are enough donations or dust in the new address before I sweep it back to itself, as currently the minimum tx fee required to even get it into another block from a normal miner would be larger than what it has.

Not unless I find a miner willing to include zero fee tx in a block, and that miner actually has a decent chance of mining that block.

Actually, I looked at the address, it seems I could still spend it all by itself, however the fee would be half of the satoshis that was sent.

There's 0.00000585 BTC in it right now, the fee that was able to send that one was 0.00000192 BTC. If that was the same fee, I'd get only 393 sats out of it.

I'll need to wait more than the next Bitcoin Core release. Moar donations needed.
