Here’s a very little addition I think would be great.
I stumbled on a privacy reminder when signing up on a forum or app can’t remember what it was exactly. It had something like ‘You’re advised not to sign up with the same username you’ve used on a different platform’.
Even though the passwords are different and hack on one wouldn’t affect the other, but your privacy would be compromised.

I think a similar sign at the sign up page on Bitcointalk (or the new forum software) would help new users keep high privacy standards. For people who understand how much their privacy means (Satoshi by creating bitcoin is at the top of leaderboard) this is important. Using different username on every new platform you sign up on, gives you privacy and the benefits that comes with it.

I hope there are days when your coffee tastes like magic, your playlist makes you dance, strangers make you smile, and the nightsky touches your soul.

There are several different types of Bitcoin clients. The most secure are full nodes like Bitcoin Core, but full nodes are more resource-heavy, and they must do a lengthy initial syncing process. As a result, lightweight clients with somewhat less security are commonly used.
Advertised sites are not endorsed by the Bitcoin Forum. They may be unsafe, untrustworthy, or illegal in your jurisdiction.

It's a good idea. It helps users protect their privacy.
I think two other warnings should be given to new users too.
1. You can never change your username.
2. You can never delete your account.

Also, a link to rules of the forum is helpful. Like terms and condition that most of the websites ask you to read and accept them before registering.

It also depends on how much privacy you really want, and if you want to be consistent, especially if you get to make friends here. I was Dabs on a gun forum (where almost every other person there carried daily), I was Dabs on some online massively multiplayer game (EverQuest) and was a mod on a forum dedicated to a specific user class of that game, and I'm Dabs on a few other forums about different topics (different topics, yeah, heh.)

In Discord and irc, I'm also Dabs, so people can verify both here and there if it's really me, as there are a lot of impostors on the chat servers.

In some older forums that "required" real names, I used them too. Those forums have almost no spam. It's the anonymous and semi-anonymous ones that attract spam because with privacy and anonymity come disregard for basic netiquette and non-accountability to one's actions.

Originally, whether people want to have privacy (from their usernames) or not, they should never use their real names for their forum account's usernames. Because they are almost unable to change their usernames in the forum. So if years after creating accounts with real names, they will struggle with their privacy if they want to change their usernames and have more privacy.

I am unable to understand how the privacy is compromised if we used our real name as our username in the forum?  We use our real names everywhere like on trading platforms, Banks accounts etc so whats the issue here ?

IMHO, I don't find this necessary for a few reasons:
1) Identity. Pretty much explains it if you don't fancy remembering different login combos.
2) There are websites linking usernames to IDs so that's half of the hacking challenge gone.
3) You can't do much with usernames, but not with emails or passwords which are rich in information.

But like what hd mentioned above, I agree you shouldn't use your real name.

It makes a little sense if you don't run your companies out there. If you run your companies, using your real name for your account in the forum or any other forums/ platforms will result in risks of damages on your reputation.

Someone can use your names to create fake accounts on different forums/ platforms and use those accounts to scam. Then if someone else want to find out basic things about you from Google search, they will fastly get so many negative search results.

Generally, I don't think using our real names for accounts on the Internet is smart thing to do. Maybe it does not a matter currently but in the long run it does cause bigger or serious matter.

It is why careful people use random usernames and random passwords with supports from good softwares.

In Discord and irc, as there are a lot of impostors on the chat servers.

Same here i use my name on discord too and on other platforms.
Whats sometimes good and you can ferify with other Users if you have the name on other services too.

I think two other warnings should be given to new users too.
1. You can never change your username.
2. You can never delete your account.

This would be good if that Information would be written at the welcome page for new users.
Because in the past there was a few Users that was coming to Meta and asked for the account that they use should be deleted.

Sometimes its the little things that helps to make it easier for new Users or others that join the Forum.
Maybe theymos can do something about it .

Or its possible to add " Accounts " to the https://bitcointalk.org/more.php page and when you click on it you get also the info for that.
just an Idea.

1. You can never change your username.
This would be a better option to add, when I was registering on the forum, I thought usernames could simply be edited and changed when the user felt like it, just like some other platforms I was on before I came into the forum. If I had known It is not possible or very difficult(based on what is required to do so)i would have chosen a different username, even though I've fallen in love with this one, it'll still be good to let new users know about that part of the forum.
Originally, whether people want to have privacy (from their usernames) or not, they should never use their real names for their forum account's usernames.
Using real names is not a problem at all, there are probably more than 1000 people that have the same name all over the world, if you do not declare your identity, you cannot be linked to anything.

Yeah, we somewhat "agree" to take it up the ass by registering so they can do whatever they want with our content. It boils down to the company's ethics (and staffs) in the end.

But leaks do happen from time to time so we've to be ready for that.

Using the same name on multiple forums and platforms is a useful way to build a net identity. If you want to protect yourself against identity theft, then register a .com, and use that for you forum name(s). I own the domain Jet Cash .com, and if I want to use it elsewhere, then you just report on that on your web page. Put a link in your profile so that people can check.  Take care if you put the link in your sig though. I was chucked off Kitco for including a simple link to Jet Cash in my sig. I joined their forum because they were talking rubbish about Bitcoin ( it is a precious metals forum ), and I posted a few facts about the Bitcoin mechanism. Maybe they didn't like that.

There is a converse to this as well. If you use a name in various other locations on the net, then you might want to register it as an alt here to prevent passing off by malicious or scamming net pirates. Another possible use it to separate your business and personal interests, and I think several members do this here. My Baronets and Kuffy alts are examples of this.

People are very fond of their usernames. It just so happens that in my case I use a different username than usual, but that's just because the one I usually use was taken.
I don't see any point in having different usernames of each platform. Maybe use a different email address would be a good idea, but for user... just don't see it.

As others before me mentioned: this is our cyber identity. If we are smart and sociable we can get some reputation and make that username mean something. Whatever your username is you probably had it for lots of years, from IRC chat rooms, online games, etc.

Use different email addresses. Don't reuse passwords and make them as complex as you can. But when it comes to username... just be yourself! That's my opinion Smiley

That's quite easy to do around here. People have staked bitcoin addresses and lots use GPG, so they can sign messages.

For example, this is the *only* way to prove that one is the real Satoshi. Sign a GPG message (his public key has been around forever) or sign a bitcoin message with any of the addresses in the first few hundred blocks and/or genesis block address.

theymos exists on this forum as well as reddit, https://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/about/moderators/

You may be using the same name/logo that will help to identify you as a person who runs the account and does not have to be the same as your name or personality Avatar.
achow101 uses that same username/logo.
You may have noticed in many places and forums and can do so without showing your identity.
