Hello all,

After having so many discussions about Privacy here in this board the past week, (specially TryNinja and o_e_l_e_o and some others) I decided to become a protonmail paid user.

It was hard to find, but it is live:
https://protonmail.com/blackfriday

5% discount.50% discount

The two year plan is about 0.009 Bitcoin (sadly, there is no discount for bitcoin payment method so far. Requested on reddit, let's see if they say anything, if anyone wanna comment there to help me, you are welcome). That's pretty reasonable, with 5GB drive.

There are two big problems for me, but I can live with them:
-Missing Calendar
-Missing a Driver app (could be web), like outbox or google drive.

Does anyone know a solution/turn around for those problems?

The minimum discount they are giving is 35% and the maximum discount is of 50%. That's a pretty good deal.

1. A decent ProtonMail alternative, Tutanota(also privacy focused), has a Calendar feature(not trying to steer you away from ProtonMail, both are very good services and I use both): https://i.imgur.com/bAGAGoM.png
2. I personally currently use Dropbox. Not a privacy-friendly alternative to Google Drive, but yea. Still looking for a better alternative that doesn't require me to sacrifice that much in terms of usability.

50%, not 5%. Smiley

You'll be pleased to know that ProtonDrive is underdevelopment, as also confirmed by their twitter account here: https://twitter.com/protonmail/status/988808782951133184.

Their CEO Andy Yen gave a podcast in April which said they were looking at release in one to two years: https://podcast.asknoahshow.com/124?t=2549

In the meantime you can always attach a document to an email and save it as a draft in a new folder you create called "storage" or something similar. I know that's far from being as user friendly a proper drive, but it gets the job done.

I personally currently use Dropbox. Not a privacy-friendly alternative to Google Drive, but yea. Still looking for a better alternative that doesn't require me to sacrifice that much in terms of usability.
You could look in to https://cryptomator.org/. Disclaimer: I have not used this service. It's open source, and basically encrypts and decrypts all the files you upload to the cloud on-the-fly via their desktop software or mobile app.

And the Calendar is also very near. Smiley

They said it would be released this summer, which means that it's close (even if already late).

As far as I remember(read it on Reddit) the new release date target of the beta is at the end of the year(hopefully the final date). If I remember correctly, their first target was last year. I'm not saying that they're going to delay this again, but yea just fyi. I became really impatient due to the delays so I just looked for an alternative instead.

I know about this alternative, However I prefer protonmail.
I would like to pay their price and have access to calendar and drive. I am impatient as well, as I am a long time proton user, and I saw all those dates and delays.

Calendar is very important to me. Recently Google killed inbox, which handled all my agenda, and I am looking for an alternative.
This is the right time to move to protonmail, as gmail Just removed the app k used the most. I will reorganize my things in a privacy friendly environment.

Well, I guess you should just wait for ProtonMail then. But if you're really interested in potential alternatives that are privacy friendly, probably while waiting for ProtonMail's calendar, probably check this out: https://www.privacytools.io/software/calendar-contacts/ - I haven't used any of those, so yea.

The site itself(privacytools.io) is great, too. Mainly for privacy-focused software recommendations and stuff. Best of luck.

And you can donate to them using bitcoin if you're feeling generous. Tongue I'm not affiliated with them just to be clear.

Is they really that much more private than gmail for example? I mean they require you to provide something linking you to other activity (email/telephone number/something i forgot).
So how is this anonymous/private? You can maybe skip that with paying? But how to use 2FA without compromising your number? Cheesy

Privacy of email my a@# Tongue, good luck with that. Won't believe also they don't provide all data to authorities when asked.

-snip-
You can sign up to ProtonMail with no identifying details whatsoever. Even the recovery email address is optional. All you need to input is your desired username and password.

Payment can be with mixed bitcoins, and therefore not linked to your identity.

2FA is optional and can be done via an app which doesn't require your phone number, or even a device with a phone number.

They use end-to-end encryption, so they have no access to the content of your emails. Compare that with Google who automatically read, process, store, and sell the content of your emails for the purpose of tracking and targeting ads.

If anyone is looking for a drive feature, I would recommend looking into Nextcloud. You can basically get a server from anywhere you want (or just host at your home, yourself) its literally Dropbox but you are hosting it. Everything belongs to you. It will be up to you if you want to connect it to the internet or not, I use mine on local subnet only. It is definitely a lot safer than anything on the net.

Yeah that would be great but

Our legal team will be able to advise you on whether or not we will be able to assist you with your particular case, and assist with the preservation of data if we believe that your request will be validated by Swiss authorities. For example, in ransomware cases, we can preserve information on which victims contacted the suspect, so that victims can be notified.
If they are able to preserve of data of chosen users, you can't believe them they don't.
Comeone? Should we trust them? This is business, they want earn money so they must comply with regulation and give/preserve user data (emails/ip etc)

They do specify that they "can preserve information on which victims contacted the suspect" that probably doesn't imply that they are able to see what you have written. Only see who you sent/received emails from and that's probably about it. As I mentioned with my drive suggestion, people can also host their own mail servers. It's not that hard.

Probably is not good enough in terms of security. Do we have any proof emails are actually encrypted end-to-end with man in the middle (protonmail) can't view them if they want?
Its important because their entire existence in the market is based on concept of privacy.

If I recall correctly, they do have some encryption WHEN you actually mail other protonmail users, it also attaches like your key etc. if you want it to. Considering that they are the one who is generating the key and keeping it, on paper, should be able to "decrypt" if they want. On top of that, if you are emailing other services like Gmail or any other mail service, it is basically impossible to do end-to-end encryption so... overall privacy and security is debatable. But the solution is available if you want to ensure one hundred per cent privacy (not including the recipient) host your mail server on your own.

Thank you for clarification. I was wondering about this privacy now i know.
About hosting your own email server, its not so simple, if it gets under investigation your server provider will snapshot (copy) your server with all emails included. You would need to keep your email server under layers of proxy sub-servers. Only solution for true privacy.

I'm trying to work out exactly what is included in the ProtonMail + ProtoVPN "bundle"... it doesn't seem to say exactly what "plans" you're getting for both services? Huh

Also, it says it is for "new and free users"... but I can't seem to get this deal to activate in my currently "free" account? When I try to "get the deal", it wants me to sign up a new account... or if I click the "already have an account" option, I don't get the 50% off deal showing up in my dashboard? Huh

When I attempt to use the coupon code "BF2019" (as extracted from the "get deal" URL), it ends up being way more expensive than using the "BUNDLE" code!!?! Huh

It's the "Plus" for both of them.

but I can't seem to get this deal to activate in my currently "free" account?
I just found this on Reddit from ProtonMail itself, posted 10 hours ago:
The promo hasn't been officially announced yet, there will be a blog post with details in about a week.

Another user said it's still not Black Friday, so I guess they will really do a black "friday" promotion, and not a "november" black friday like most companies do? Cheesy

1. Last time i checked Tutanota, they still planning to accept cryptocurrency. For user who have serious privacy concern, their only option is anonymous pre-load card.

LOL yea. Tutanota's bitcoin/cryptocurrency payments is pretty much the equivalent of ProtonMail's calendar feature. Can't believe how Tutanota is taking so much time to implement crypto payments too, as it's A LOT more important in my opinion(in a privacy standpoint) compared to ProtonMail's calendar. Unfortunately while both services have their own missing features, all we can do is to use alternatives for now and be patient.
