Ledger Firmware 1.6.0 - Known Bugs and Issues

Ledger has recently updated their firmware to version 1.6 and it is slowly becoming available to users over the Ledger Live App.
Since there will probably be some bugs and issues I thought we could have one place where these problems can be discussed and solutions offered on how to fix them.

Feel free to offer your advice how to best go about doing this.

So i updated Ledger Live, updated the firmware on my Ledger Nano S, synced up, everything is fine...

I have Stratis on my Ledger Nano S and wanted to take some of it out after a very long time and during the reinstallation of the Stratis app i got into a problem... I installed the app and i get to adding accounts. When i press "add Stratis" it asks me to connect and unlock my Ledger device, the next step is "Open the Stratis app" but when i do it gets me straight back to "Connect and unlock your ledger device" and nothing is happening...

Any ideas?

/EDIT: I actually can't access my Bitcoin wallet either now, when i open the app it goes back to "connect your ledger wallet".

Possible solutions:

Please check if activating "Experimental USB" in the experimental features of Ledger Live fixes the issue

Don't update your Ledger firmware to version 1.6.0, i was about to update mine

IMO people should make sure they've made backup of their mnemonic/recovery phrase before risking update to version 1.6.0, even if i doubt the storage will be corrupted or wiped out.

Why the hell would someone risk your own coins to participate in a beta?
Ok, maybe you are not risking them.. but they may become unavailable for you to spend for some time if some woerd bug happens.

Just avoid updating any firmware until some time passed and they fixed the bugs. With every software or hardware..

Seems that several different users are reporting connection issues to the newly installed apps in the 1.6 firmware. Here is another one that just popped up.

Honestly, I haven't had any issues with the 1.6.0 firmware... except for me not realising that Ledger Live doesn't support BCH "CashAddr" address format and thinking something was broken!

The update went super smooth, the device wasn't reset and it's been running just fine ever since.

Just avoid updating any firmware until some time passed and they fixed the bugs. With every software or hardware..

So how do you ever update anything? You'd need to wait until the update to the update was tested... but wait, that new update might have bugs... so you'd better wait for the update to the update to the update... oh... but what if that update also has bugs? Better wait for the update to the update to the update to the update... ad infinitum!

The 1.6.0 firmware has been out for quite a while now... and there haven't been any super critical issues... a few connections issues with a couple of Altcoin wallets is hardly cause for concern.

I have never seen a new firmware from ledger comes with a beta program.  This was clearly a different update, a big one.
I decided to wait and I didn't regret

I wonder why Ledger is taking so long to accept the new BCH addresses, haven't they been around for like 2 years already?
They did take a lot of time to offer support for native segwit as well.

I do partly agree with bitmover. I don't like to be among the first group to apply a new update. I'd rather hang back and see what happens just in case they discover a serious flaw. Last time I connected my Ledger there still was no update to firmware 1.6 and I am OK with that. I am not in a hurry. Ill try again in a week or two.

It was a major update and you can see it with the version numbers

Usually only C digit increases, but B indicates an update more important, and A a totally new version.
Not sure if I'm totally correct but it works like this in the dev. environment. There are always a beta phase before any update, but this beta phase was public

By the way, I have been able to update a device to 1.6.0 without a problem.

I updated my Ledger Nano S to firmware version 1.6 last night. I had no issues during the update process. Since I had version 1.5.5 before there was no need to uninstall my installed apps, Ledger took care of all that. The wallet was fully operational after the update and didn't reset.

Another reddit user reporting issues when opening and trying to add new accounts after firmware update 1.6. I haven't experienced anything like this so far, hopefully I wont have to either. Anyone here that had issues like the person below?

Yes, I have Lenger Nano S in my hands with a similar problem.

Update from 1.5.5. to 1.6.0.

The problem appears on all accounts including BTC.

Attempting to restore the Help / Repair your Ledger Device firmware leads to the error "Exception: Invalid status 6984"

Hardware: Ledger Nano S
Previous version: 1.5.5
Ledger Live version: 1.18.2
Ubuntu version: 18.04.3 LTS (64bit)

I was trying to upgrade my Ledger Nano S to version 1.6.0 from Ledger Live running on Ubuntu machine. Done upgrades previously without any problem until now. The update was basically uploaded and transferred to the Ledger wallet, followed instruction to unplug and plug it (with left button pressed) and it went without a problem until it got stuck on message "Finalizing the update". Since that time the device is in "Update" mode and cannot do anything about it. Repair says an error message "Invalid status 6984".

I even tried to enable an experiment feature called "Experimental USB - Alternative USB implementation that might help solve USB issues.", but that didn't help to solve the problem. And as already said, I had no problem updating it previously on this computer...

Any idea what went wrong and how I can fix my Ledger Nano S device?

Did you update the udev rules before starting the update ? I'd suggest checking that, then restarting in bootloader mode (left button pressed), then finalizing the update.

That apparently fixed the issue of the reddit user who had a similar problem.

@btchip: Thank you for pointing me the right direction. Although I have tried Option 1 and Option 2 on this link previously (https://support.ledger.com/hc/en-us/articles/115005165269-Fix-connection-issues), it didn't solve my problem (not sure why). I noticed that my Ledger Nano USB bus device is connected with root owner/group.
I followed the instructions in https://developer.chrome.com/apps/app_usb#caveats. Those two documents together should help solving this issue.

To who has similar problem, make sure that connected Ledger Nano via USB has correct owner/group, so the Ledger Live can access it.
1) Connect your Ledger Nano to USB and enter your PIN
2) Run: lsusb (mine Ledger Nano S is the 2c97 device)
3) Run: ls -al /dev/bus/usb/<BUS from previous command>/<DEVICE from previous command>
e.g. ls -al /dev/bus/usb/002/031

I believe it should either have a group plugdev as group, which you should be part of, or you should be the owner, not the root.

Ledger Live simply will not connect reliably to any of my Nano S devices now. It connects to the Ledger initially, then moves to the step "Open the Bitcoin app on your device" and I do so, the Ledger disconnects and it goes back to step 1. When I exit the app the Ledger reconnects. But opening the app on the Ledger just disconnects the device again.

This is the kind of crap that totally turns people off devices like this. How do we know that these devices are secure when they don't even work? I can't send any BTC anywhere, nor can I connect to my accounts in Ledger to confirm a receiving address.

I even defaulted a couple of them and set them up from scratch again to try and get them to work. Still unreliable, I can only get one or two devices to work intermittently, and not very often. Tried multiple cables, no change. WTH!

What a clusterfail, Ledger. GET IT TOGETHER.

What is your OS?

If it's on Linux try updating the udev rules as mentioned above. This faulty USB connection seems to happen on random people. I personally got this when I change the USB cable. Ironically, my pc no longer detects the device when I used the original Ledgercable but it's fine when I use my old USB cable that's probably 4 years old.

After more testing, I have found that if I connect my Ledger to the computer first, enter my PIN, and only THEN launch Ledger Live, I have about a 75% chance of being able to work with my Ledger balances.

Still not a great advert for Ledger.

Finally I made Ledger Nano S firmware update on my ancient Windows 7 PC few days ago. And as expected, it wasn't smooth operation
During update I got "Invalid status 6984" error on Ledger Live and my wallet was stuck on Bootloader. But on second attempt I was able to update firmware without any issues and errors. I mainly use it just for BTC, so I haven't noticed any bugs on my side so far.

What if you use it with Electrum? Did Electrum notice your device or not?

I'd suggest you use Electrum if you just only need to access your Bitcoin. Ledger Live is a pain in the ass sometimes. It would be better if you can grab a log to see what's happening with your Ledger software.

Updated my ledger after knowing it is not mandatory to put 24-word recovery phrase again. Everything went well without any issue and applications are also working fine. BTC, LTC and ETH are tested and working as expected.

I always do it the other way around. I launch Ledger Live and after that I connect my Ledger device. I haven't discovered any issues so far with the 1.6 firmware version. The only little difference is that the Ledger Live opening screen seems to load longer than it used to in the past. But this is something I noticed with one of the Ledger Live updates and it is not connected to the new firmware.

Ledger Live and Windows 7... I guess that's the reason. Incompatibility.
Upgrade to Windows 10 while it is still available.

So you still managed to make a firmware update on Windows 7? I try to update previous firmware 1.5.5 on this OS, but it also fails few time and stuck, so I finish it on W10. What is interesting is that afterward, Ledger Live did not function as before on W7, it just starts and crashes with some error after 30 seconds or 2 minutes. This was not the case with firmware version 1.4.2, so obviously there were some changes in a new firmware.

Given that many people still use the W7, it is good info that there is still an option to update firmware via this OS.
