Yeah, I saw it on Reddit when I tried to find solution for this issue.

Ledger Live and Windows 7... I guess that's the reason. Incompatibility.
Upgrade to Windows 10 while it is still available.
You're right, because Windows 7 is officially unsupported on Ledger Live. Upgrading OS is good idea, but for me it's not worth to do that on heavy outdated hardware, I rather would get new PC.

@Lucius, yeah, I was able to do that, same like previous firmware update and didn't faced similar issues like you. Now Windows 7 still have 30% market share, so it's good that's still possible to use Ledger on it. But I think that these numbers among crypto users is significantly smaller. And after few weeks when Microsoft will stop supporting this OS, these numbers will start falling more and more, so probably Ledger don't see big enough demand to support W7, especially looking in long term.

I haven't updated my nano ledger s for a while.  Im still using the 1.5 or 1.5.5 version.  I have not connected my nano ledger s to my laptop in over 2.5 months until recently.

Do i need to do this firmware update?  Also at the moment,  i noticed when i connected my ledger s to my laptop, the screen is very dim... like its running out of battery but i read the nano ledger s does not have a battery.

I don't want an issue where you can no longer update the firmware like how i read someone a while back didn't update his ledger s for like years and then he couldn't update it anymore on the nano ledger s.

Thanks for reply HCP.  But anyone here has this issue with the display screen being much dimmed?  Like the words use to be pretty green in color on the display but now... its like not that bright.  Like imagine u watch tv and you lessen the brightness and its a bit harder to read the screen... thats how its like with my ledger now.

Well i got it about 2 years ago the ledger nano.

But does having it plugged into the usb port when not using it do any good?  Or it can only do harm.  Someone a while back said since there is no battery in it, having it connected to usb port is actually bad?

@jerry0
I have not experienced brightness issues on my device but you should check the settings on your wallet and turn up the brightness level if needed.

Why would you keep it plugged in to your computer if you are not using it? It doesn't serve any purpose being plugged in all the time. You just said in another post that you haven't used your Nano S for 2.5 months. Was it connected to your computer all this time? Keep it in a safe and dry place and connect it only when you need to use it.
Nano S doesn't have a battery. If it did you would be able to turn it on without connecting it via the cable that transmits power to run it.

hello !
i m totally lost and a bit worried.
i think i tried everything to access my bitcoin and my ethereums after the update
to 1.6.
my balance is 0 and i of course sent a message to ledger with no answer so far.
since i did the update, sometimes my computer ( mac 10.11 ) shuts down when i plug
the ledger.
before the update, everything was fine.
i reset everything...ledger live, the ledger ( got a new passphrase and so on )
for the same result.
i can t fix it because when i plug it pushing the left button, it stays stuck on bootloader
and sometimes have a message with invalid status 6984 for example...
i read many treads and still stuck..
i changed the rate provider and so on...
can anyone help please ?
thank you

From what I know from the experience of other users regarding Ledger and mac is that you problems may be related with outdated version of mac OS. There is an identical case where the user's computer also crashed after the Ledger firmware update, and the problem is resolved with updating mac to newer version. On Ledger site it is stated that Nano S is working with macOS 10.8+.

I have Macbook Pro and Ledger Nano S. I'm using the Chrome Ledger apps. Since last Ledger update, every time I try to log in, my computer crashes. Just in case anyone's having this same problem - it seemed to fix it when I updated my Mac OS to High Sierra.

I am not sure what is causing those issues but please explain this part that I quoted, what exactly did you do?

For the record, you have to restore your wallet using the same seed words that were given to you when you created it the first time. If you added a passphrase initially, you need to use that exact password when you restore your wallet.

 thank you for answering.
i can t remember exactly because of the stress and everyhting,
but i did everything i was asked to.
first i think i reset everything, so i have a new list  of 24 words.
then i had to confirm this list.
( for exemple i start to dial the words and i had to choose between
several to confirm.)
don t know if i m clear enough.

For start, read what I wrote in a previous post regarding the crash of your computer and operating system, which is very likely the cause of this problem. To upgrade your OS, follow the instructions on this link : How to upgrade to macOS Catalina.

As Pmalek is saying, you need to use same seed words to recover your accounts on Ledger, new 24 words will generate brand-new wallet/s and your balance will be 0. Use your old seed words and follow these instructions : Restore from recovery phrase.

Yes. Their page says they support MacOS starting from the version 10.9, so it should work fine.

Yes. You need to do that if you need to restore your wallet in the device, but you only need to do that once. After that, you setup your wallet on the Ledger Live and you can use it as a watch-only address whenever you want. When you want to send something, you just connect the Ledger, unlock it and go to the coin app you want to handle.

HCP.  At the moment, Im not in the US and dont have my 24 word seed.  I leave that seed back in the US in that apartment.  I do not have my seed with me at the moment.  So would you say only do firmware update if you have the seed in hand?  Again, i only done 2 firmware updates and first one i did a while back i had tons of issue with bootloader etc.  The 2nd firmware update worked good.

I can take picture of my screen but from the picture, it doesn't look like that dim.  But the ledger s screen definitely looks dim.  Previously the screen was much brighter... but you never heard cases like this?  I read a few on reddit.

How long you had your nano ledger s?  They say it last up to 5 years.  So shouldn't you get one every 3 or 4 years just in case something happens to it?  Of course make sure you have the seed.  But you think its good idea after 3 years just get a new one?  Then what do you do with the old one then?

The only risk of doing an update with having your seed available, is that in the unlikely event of something going wrong and you having to reset the device, you won't be able to restore and use your Nano S until you have access to your seed again.

If the wallet is currently working and you don't need/require any of the new features from the latest update, then NOT updating to 1.6.0 probably isn't going to be problematic. This update was NOT a "required" update... Ledger Live and all the old features still work fine on the previous firmware (1.5.5)

As for life expectancy... where exactly did you get this from?
They say it last up to 5 years.
Who is "They" and where did "they" say this? Huh Honestly, I don't recall seeing anything regarding life expectancy of the Nano S... certainly nothing official from Ledger. In any case, I would expect it to be similar to USB memory sticks... likely measured in write cycles...

So, unless you're constantly wiping and restoring the device, the persistent memory isn't being written to that often... and if you don't leave the device connected permanently, the screen is being used much either.

Hey HCP thanks for reply.  Yes i get the point if you mean with not having the seed with you at the moment.

Yes the last time i used nano ledger s with ledger live it was fine.  My concern was if i don't update it, would there be a time like when someone created a thread that they could not do a firmware update because they didn't touch their ledger in at least few years and was in that very old version like version one?  That is why i always dont want to do an update.

I thought i read 5 years somewhere.  So that is the nano ledger x then right?

But you would never do firmware update if you dont have access to the phrase right?

I rarely ever connect my ledger nano s to laptop unless im sending or about to send.  Once its done, i unplug it.

Even if you dont have your seed with you and somehow mess up the firmware update nothing will happen to your funds so dont worry. Once you have access to your seed again you can restore your wallet.

You really should upgrade it. No reason why not to. As long as your seed is 100% correct you can always restore your accounts from the seed in case of issues.

My Ledger also broke down after the latest firmware update, thankfully had almost nothing stored on it. Sent Ledger a message, but I expect they do nothing. Will never buy a Ledger ever again. I almost never used my Ledger, used my Trezor a lot more as it is much more user friendly and never had 1 issue with my Trezor.

My concern was if i don't update it, would there be a time like when someone created a thread that they could not do a firmware update because they didn't touch their ledger in at least few years and was in that very old version like version one?

You're too paranoid, even for something so sensitive, such as cryptocurrency. Process of firmware update is something that takes a few minutes on a supported OS, and in most cases does not cause the Nano S/X to reset. Your problem is that you complicate things that are so simple, you hold the seed in another country, and persistently ask the same questions that you have already answered. Just update your Ledger or don't do it, it is a simply choice - who knows what will be with Ledger in next 5 or 10 years.

My Ledger also broke down after the latest firmware update, thankfully had almost nothing stored on it. Sent Ledger a message, but I expect they do nothing.

Broke down how, what exactly happened? The device could be reset to factory settings or in worst case you burn/brick it. In first case you can recover your coins by entering seed, and in second case Ledger has already replaced (for free) broken devices several times.

Impossible to say with 100% certainty, but I would suspect that this would no longer be the case given the changes they've made to the firmware/infrastructure in more recent firmware revisions... I would think that Ledger would likely give warning if this was to occur.

The simple solution is simply check every 6 months or so to see if any updates have been released.

I thought i read 5 years somewhere.  So that is the nano ledger x then right?

That would appear to be correct, from the Ledger Nano X support pages regarding battery life:
End of life
The battery is designed to last 5 years. Ledger does not provide a battery replacement program. If battery capacity has degraded beyond being practically usable, the device can be used by connecting it to a power source using the USB cable.

As the Nano S does not have a battery, so this "life expectancy" does not apply to the S. Wink

But you would never do firmware update if you dont have access to the phrase right?
That depends on:
1. Is it a "required" update?
2. How "urgent" the firmware update was (ie. is it patching a critical security flaw)
3. Whether I needed immediate access to the funds
4. The time frame for recovery should the device reset and I needed to use the recovery phrase

If it was super urgent and I really needed to use the funds, I'd probably risk an update without the phrase. For the most part, the newer updates seem to go through OK without requiring a reset. However, if it is just a "feature" update (providing new coin etc) and they're not features I desperately need, then I'd probably just wait and continue to the current firmware.

As a side note... and something you might want to consider, given what appears to be a very large physical distance between your "regular" location and your recovery phrase storage location... what happens if you simply break the device and need access to your funds? What recovery plan do you have? Are you comfortable with the time frames involved?

It's all well and good having the recover phrase stored offsite... but useless if that is at direct odds with your requirements for being able to recover in a reasonable time frame.

Hey.  Well the thing is im close to 100% sure my seed is correct as when i wrote it down very carefully.  However i never did the intentionally put incorrect pin 3 times so to reset it just to confirm my seed.  Does that make sense?  Does everyone does that to confirm their 24 word seed is correct.
